Canon equivilant to the SB26

In my eyes, the SB26 is the perfect off camera speedlight. Its cheap, it drops to 64, its robust, and it has an optical sensor.

I picked up for for £45 which was pretty cheap and I love it for my off camera work, but is there a Canon Equivilant?
 
I don't have the answer you're looking for, but I will point out that once you use flashes off camera, they are no longer brand specific. Why does it matter whether you use a Canon or Nikon or Jessops etc. flash as long as it triggers fine and has manual control? Chances are if you're after such an old model, then it won't be compatible with the latest DSLRs anyway (the Nikon will not work with iTTL cameras for example.)
 
rgrebby, I don't think Canon actually built optical slaves into their flashes at any point, which is why the Nikon's have been the staple flash for anyone doing off camera work.

I know neither the 540EZ and the 550EX carried an optical slave, the 540 being from an era similar to the SB26 and the 550EX being from around 2000 when the SB28 (which didn't have an OS) was around. The SB80DX featured an OS I think.

I sold my '26 a while ago and although I just use Skyports now, an OS is a very handy thing to have. The SU-4 function on my SB800 is invaluable when i need it and probably the reason why i'll get another SB800.

Thanks Specialman, good info there. I was pretty sure canon didnt have something similar.

Kanine, I know that it doesnt matter, which is why I use my Nikon SB26 for off camera flash, I just picked another one up for £70 as all my lighting is off camera now days.

rgrebby, I know one problem with old Canon flashes was a built-in standby mode that couldn't be turned off - think the 430EZ (??) was one of these offending models. Think most Nikons had the function to turn it on or off at will either by button cominations or by a dedicated slider/button.

I kind of miss my '26, although with skyports my '28s are great - much better buttons for people like me who have cumberland sausages for fingers!! :)
