hey guys, im not having much luck finding a d90 and have been offered a cannon eos350d, i have no idea what spec this is but it got me thinking i could try a canon, which one would be as good as a d90 with the same stuff on it and produce the same pic quality? canons seem cheaper than nikon so i might have a better chance of getting a decent one if i look at canons too but i want one that is better than my d70, i know nothing about canon as my d70 is my first dslr, helpneeded please, thanks

I dont think there is a direct equivalent

it seems to sit between the xxxd and xxd range somewhere

Roughly between the 550d and 50d if I am not mistaken? (which I probably am!)

ahh thanks, i will look at those aswell then, there is so many, i was just getting my head round all the nikons lol

would love new but can only afford second hand, but even second hand all seem to be up over £400 and i cant really afford that lol, imight just be dreaming

I'd have thought the closest would be the 50D the xxxD's aren't really the same

Have you emailed the likes of Digital Depot, MPB, LCE etc asking them to inform you of any D90's that come in?

You could always try adtrader, ignore gumtree as its full of scammers

I think you will struggle to find a Canon xxd under £400 either that matches the D90

ive tried ad trader but not the others, i will do that now, thanks

When i bought my D90 i think the equivalent was something like the 500 or 550D

Strangely enough I was sorting out all my old AP's to chuck out and one of them had a test between the Canon 550d and Nikon D90.
So guessing they are roughly equivalent, Canon came out top mainly for resolving detail better and having more modern features.

I would have thought the 40D was nearer, but never having held let alone used a D90 can't really say

Nowt wrong with the 40D mate, I took a D90 back to swap it for a 40D :)

thanks a lot, that gives me more to look at now, guess how i will be spending my evening? lol

I would tend to agree with this. I shout with a mate who has a D90 and he thinks my 50D has higher specs than his Nikon.

That said specs do not count wholly towards final images.

Pure technical specs alone and the 40D is on a level par with the D90.

The D90 has a better more recent sensor than the 40D (slightly better Dynamic range and slightly better ISO performance (particularly better at 3200 and above (the 40D only goes up to 1600 actual ISO, 3200 is 1600 pushed a stop up))

But the 40D has a metal body, faster frame rate and larger buffer against the D90.

The 40D is more similar to the D200 in many ways, the D200 is even more solidly built than the 40D with more weather sealing, but the sensor is even older and even less good at the high ISO's.

As said, i'd probably say 40D. But the newer 50D would be better for general 'newness' (if thats even a word??!!) and things like ISO performance. Probably be able to pick one up with only a couple of thousand shots on it as well. Since the 50D is rated for 150k shots then that means it'll have a fair few years left on it

All the best,

Si

You will get there nev, keep coming to meets as well. It was good to meet you!

Just keep asking lots of relevant questions throughout the forum and I'm sure you will be up to 100 in no time at all to make the most of the classifieds.

From my understanding of Canon (as a mainly Nikon user) this is spot on.

This page compares the 500d and d90, I found it quite useful.

What lenses have you already got for your Nikon?

If you have a few it would be a shame to lose money (if its tight) switching systems.

The one thats in the classifieds at £415 is mine and will probably still be there when you get to 100 posts (the way things are going).

i dont have expensive ones, just a AF NIKKOR 35-80MM 1:4-5.6D
and a AF NIKKOR 70-300MM 1:4-5.6G
so wouldnt be the end of the world to replace them i suppose but would prefere not to have too

I guess you will have just to remember factoring in the price for new lenses if you make the switch

is it possible to get a new screen? the big lcd one, there is one ive seen with a heavily scratched screen but its cheap so could be worth getting it and replacing the screen if its not too expensive?

I'd say the D90 is the equivalent of the 60D in terms of what role it fills, though the 60D is a newer and better camera. Canon didn't really have a match for the D90 before as their xxxD range went against the D60/D3000/D5000 cameras and the 40D and 50D went against the D200/D300/s

If its the one on ebay without the rubber cover etc. It sounds like its been heavily abused. I would be worried about that and would rather pay a little more.

I was thinking about a 50d to replace my d90 I just sold. Only thing that's put me off is getting one and having to buy cf cards instead of SD.

Are cf cards here to stay, would you say?

i have cf cards for my d70, they are easily available and if i remember rightly they are quite cheap too

I would say they will be around for life of the 50d that you want to buy.

I hope they will be around for while as im waiting on my D700 and new CF cards to arrive

I think i was looking in the wrong places as i saw a 16gb cf was almost 70 quid as opposed to 17 for the same sized sd card.

I'll keep looking for better deals (and of course a 50d).

Oops, just realised I probably wouldn't need a 400x card for a 50d and therefore can get a much cheaper one.

mine was either from 7dayshop.com or mymemory.com
