Canon EOS R Series Cameras

Just tried to get a loan R1, seems they are in very short supply........will call them on Monday.

I have this covered, I do have some very nice EF L glass, including 2 primes. I realise the Sigma may not get the best out of the sensor but my EF glass should. My 100-400L mkii works a dream on the R7, the detail that resolves from that sensor is fantastic, I've probably taken some of my crispest shots ever with that combo.

Once I get the camera, I can then concentrate on new RF glass, I've probably bought my last EF or Sigma lens, although I won't be in the market for lenses for some time after the body purchase.

I also have R7, EF 100-400L Mkii, plus 70-300L IS USM f4-5.6, EF 100L f2.8 macro, sigma 150-600C, Sigma RF mount 18-50 f2.8 C. All work very well via the canon EF to RF adapter except the sigma 150-600C which suffers with some mild pulsing AF. One needs to bear in mind the 150-600 is a £800 lens compared equitant canon would be apx 5k plus !

I have the 150-600C and I found the pulsing issue almost immediately on the R7. Image quality with that lens was very good though, with nice details.

I've decided not to get the kit, I'll get a decent card and a spare battery instead. I'll see how I get on with the Sigma for now and also, an old EF24-105(mk1) that I have. That lens has an AF problem, which is why I bought the Sigma 2 years ago .......... I can compare notes between the 2 and maybe trade them for an upgrade in a few months or so.

I'm sure my EF 24-105 is repairable though (AF hunts between 35 and 50mm for some reason), so we'll see.

Is that no new camera and no new lenses or is the R5ii on its way?

I assume you have the latest firmware for the Sigma. I also have that lens but have minimal pulsing issues although I do not use high burst rate which is mentioned in connection with the fault.

Sorry, no new lens, I'm probably ordering the camera tomorrow.

My Sigmas are up to date (both the 24-105 and 150-600), I have the dock, very handy. I too found the 150-600 to be better at slower burst rates, plus 30fps is overkill for me. (y)

if you are committed to it - that is clearly the way to go and hopefully remains that way. I noticed recently all Sigma lenses disappeared not that you can buy one for cannot.

George. Check out Cotswold cameras. £4200.for the R1.
Thanks!

As I've bought quite a bit from them in the past, Panamoz are bettering that, I've got an R1 coming on test drive (thanks Brentor!) so will do a bit of comparison and decide then....

.....looking forward to Monday!!

George, I tried one when Canon hosted an event on a Pangolin Botswana trip. It feels very nice to use. Although I am happy with the Olympus and their amazing 150-400.lens. I ended up buying an R1 with the 100-500 zoom.
You may regret selling your 400 DO ii. They are like rocking horse poo in the UK at the moment. I sold mine a couple of years ago but have just bought another one mint from. WEX for less than I sold mine for. The 400.2.8 is too heavy and expensive for me to justify.
Be prepared to part with some.cash shortly!!

Hi Gordon, did you use Pangolin trips in Botswana?...that's funny if so we used them on the Chobe river for a few trips and they were very good.

I'm using the 100-500 now with the R5/2, it's a reasonable weight and yes the DO was good but there is a significant weight advantage on the 100-500 which suits me just fine!

For various reasons the big overseas travels are beyond us now (but if you haven't been, Patagonia is fantastic and I have a great contact for anyone wanting to go there, just PM me!) so a single zoom fits the bill well now for Scottish wildlife.

I'm looking forward to doing the comparison, however!

Nice to hear from you again, Gordon!

I will be interested to see how the sensor of the R1 and the R5ii compare. I'm not into the megapixel race at all but one of the reasons I'm going R5ii over the R1 is the potential extra (if that's the right word) cropability of the R5's 45mp sensor, compared to 24mp. If it wasn't for that, I'd be going R1 or R3.

Even at 4 metres or so from the lens, a Kingfisher is small in the frame and I need to factor in potential cropability and retaining detail.

Hi George
Yes I used Pangolin. I have been with them on the Chobe boats a good few times now. I like their specials which run from Dec-March. They are particularly good value and no single supplement. I have just returned from their Best of Chobe deal (houseboat and lodge) the new houseboat is spectacular. I took my son with me to show him what his inheritance was being spent on. He made it clear that he was just a spectator and wouldn't take many pictures. By day two I couldn't prize the OM and 150-400 out of his hands. Fortunately I also had 2 Canons and Pangolin loaned me a 600f4.
I keep saying it will be the last trip but already I am eyeing up the specials for the end of the year or early next. I haven't been to Patagonia, I'm not sure the kids inheritance would stretch that far!!

Do Pangolin charge for the loan of lenses? and do you know if you can book in advance??

Seems that would be a good way to have a big tele to use and not have to take it with you / hire it in the UK with all the problems that would entail

D

Gordon might be able to help David, I'm sorry I don't know but ypu could always ask them, were you just going to the Chobe river?

I would love to go on Pangolin safari, however the cost is out of range even for a week especially with single occupancy, and flight !

Pangolin will loan a camera (r6 mk2 i believe) and a 100 - 500 zoom. I don't know if this is for any of their safaris or just those on the Chobe River. They also have a couple of ef 600 f4 lenses and I have been able to borrow one on 2 occasions. I don't know if they are generally lent out or I have been lucky (I am a fairly frequent visitor). When you book they ask if you have your own kit or wish to borrow theirs.

Their specials are USD 2500 with no single supplement which is a massive saving and why I do them fairly often. It is the wet season but I have only ever had one day of rain. Most of the trips are based on the water but you will do at least one game drive. At this time of year the vegetation is thick so it is harder to get a clear view of the wildlife. Because it is hotter you do get some lovely shots of the elephants playing in the water.
If you are prepared to fly in economy the airfares can be reasonable.

Wow, I have travel to Australia in cattle class, and every flight I have had is cattle, so yep, I can do economy....lol

What is the normal cost of a flight, and do you get direct to in Zimbabwe ?
I believe there is no direct flight, or an airport near Niagara fall area !

From the UK you fly to Johannesburg then on to Kasane in Botswana. Pangolin meet you at Kasane airport and it's a 10 minute drive to the Pangolin Lodge. Both Virgin and BA fly to Johannesburg for around £500 and airlink fly to Kasane. The leg to Kasane is quite expensive, around £350.

Thanks for the info,
Another £850 on top of the safari cost does make this rather pricey, and that is why I have been looking for deals up to 14 days to make it worth while. As 7 days is just not enough time for the expense, and effort getting there.

I would like to do this one

That looks fabulous but what a difference in price. $2500 to "from" $13900. Is there a single supplement on top of that?. I really like Pangolin but at that price there is a lot of other operators. It is through the peak season so the sightings should be better on land.

Depending on what you want to photograph "Natures lens" have a good selection of trips available. I am off to Kenya with them next month and I have photographed tigers in india and pelicans in Greece with them.
I believe that they have space on their reasonably priced trip to ZIMANGA (Google it) next May.
Steve and Ann Toon are a couple of professional wildlife photographers who run African safaris but they get booked up quickly "toonsafaris"
Plenty of options out there but none of them are cheap.when you factor in travel.

I have looked at a few Safaris operators, and even some of the YouTube Togs like Gavin Hardcastle, Tomas Heaton, Braden Van Son, Dani Connor Wild, Hannah etc. All of there 'workshops' are pretty expensive to start with, and none include travel ( some do not include food or drink apart from breakfast ) to the destination which adds a significate extra cost to the workshop.

Especially Patagonia which I would love to go experience, and I really do not want to wait till I retire as I might not be physically fit enough to experience the hiking, camping on location etc.

Post coved lock down the price of holidays, and travel has raisin apx from 20% to 35% as general rule, though I believe safaris have resin far more than that !

just looked at this one
The cost jumps significantly for the 11 nights 2025 £5,950 to £6,750 for 2026 !
That is a very high RPI rate ! ! !

Mine works fine but I have the latest firmware

Post Covid all trips have increased-some dramatically. The Safari to Zimanga that you have quoted is with Steve and Ann Toon who i know and rate very highly but their trip is on the higher side. Natures lens trip is shorter but considerably cheaper at £4300 but for that you only get 2 sessions in the overnight hide (plus of course all the other hides and game drives.
I tend to look at the overall cost inc travel, tips, food etc then divide it by the hours of exposure to the wildlife and end up with a cost per hour to photograph the wildlife. Unscientific and slightly mercenary but it gives me a starting point to consider the other merits of the trip that add to the cost.
I have been looking at photographing gorillas in uganda and the total cost (ie money out of my bank account) would be around £8k for.tbat you get 4 1 hour sessions with gorillas. That equates to £2k per hour to photograph a single species!

Well I got a phone call from Canon try the kit to see if I wanted it tomorrow instead of Monday and return date (next Thursday) stays the same!!....so I'm getting 3 extra days free!!

Looking forward to that, a good try out I hope!!

Good news. I have had this type of extension several times.

Not meaning to hijack the thread with irrelevancies but if you're going to go to Chobe a great addition is to do the Delta as well..but of course more cost....

Initial plays with the 2 bodies is interesting but not yet conclusive for me, I love the feel of the 1 series and the weight is significantly less than the 1Dx mk 2s I was using prior to the change to the R series, and I'm trying to replicate settings re AF and ISO etc on both the bodies. Got a few more days yet to carry on with the tests.

More o read this thread the more I want to try out canons test drive ! Lol
I take it a hefty deposit is required, ie if i r6ii, 300L f2.8 etc
£1875 for the R1, fully refundable unless I break it...........

I’ve used the test drive a few times with a credit card deposit. It’s usually refunded back to card quite quickly from what I remember, so haven’t had to pay the bill.

This
Though if the timing is bad you may end up paying then have it come off your next bill(s)

I am tempted to try canons test drive withR6ii, and 100-500L ! !
Like to see how my R7 likes the 100-500L, and just how much difference using a FF camera feels like.
Be careful. It is a very good lens, worked well on my R7 and R6. Your wallet may suffer.

I am just waiting for an event to come up were I can use the lens / R6ii
There is a bird of prey shoot which I book for October, and I have a long exposure work shop booked in October.
I am tempted to test drive R5ii, and perhaps RF 24-105L f2.8 ! !

I am hoping to go to Port Lympne Safari Park soon, and if I do canon will be getting a request for a test drive for the 100-500L !
