Canon EOS R Series Cameras

Thanks for linking me to the manual, was hoping there might be more detail. Lexar card should work fine, and indeed seems to in my 1DX3. I'm hoping this is the route cause of the issues as don't really want hassle of claiming warranty - obviously will if I need to!!

Just shooting in JPG.

Has anyone else had any problems with the R5 Mark II? What memory card(s) are you using?
 
Has anybody added the RF24-105 f2.8? I used the f4 version on a recent trip and it occurs to me that it might be something I could consider adding to me kit.

I had a go at the photography show
It’s Mahoosive. Weighs as much as the 28-70 f2

Oh and with my 1DX3 both cards work fine, including the Lexar. Only a problem in the 5DII it seems.

Does Canon have a recommended CF Express card list published? Maybe the Lexar Silver isn't fast enough or something (should be).

I can’t comment on Lexar CFexpress cards but I did have an issue with an SD card of theirs where the write protect lug kept deploying. The customer service was excellent, so it may be worth contacting them. They replaced the card for me.

I'm no optical design engineer, but I think the plan was to make smaller and lighter lenses, and that means external zoom

That's what I thought... I think I may have picked it up in Birmingham - not sure. It was so crowded. Not going next year; the money I spent at the show would have all gone on transport and accommodation. Maybe if it comes back to Birmingham next year I will go again. First one I will have missed for a long time. I didn't sign up for any speakers either last year. They used to get a really big name or two.

A train ride to London is as long and cheaper than Birmingham as I live on the East Coast mainline.
Havent decided for certain yet, but my nephew was keen to go.
 
Couple of points please, I'm at last taking the plunge and moving to mirrorless and am going for an R5 mk2, RF24-105F4 and an RF 100-500.

Trading in my old gear (BTW WEX seem to give better prices than MPB) but wondering if my rather old 600EX-RTs would work ok?...don't do much flash so no point in upgrading unless I have to!!

Yes they should work fine.
Just RTM regarding electronic shutter with flash.
And you’ll need to turn off exp sim in the viewfinder to use them effectively.

The easiest way to use flash w mirrorless is to set C1 as a flash use case. I have ISO400 M 1/125, f5.6 and exp sim turned off as a start point.
Obviously from there I can tweak aperture and ISO, but they’re closer to default studio settings for me.

Thanks Phil, as I’m a mirrorless virgin, I’m not au fait with some of the terminology… exp sim is that exposure simulation? What’s left on the screen? Excuse my ignorance!!

In the mirrorless world it’s common practice to use exposure simulation. So that your viewfinder shows a WYSIWYG display, making it easy to see whether you need to use exposure compensation. It’s a boon.

Right up until you set yourself up a little studio to snap a grandkid, then all of a sudden, your viewfinder is very dark, because you’re not planning to expose for that ambient light, you’re planning to use your flash through a brolly.
So that’s why when we’re using flash, exposure simulation stops being useful, cos it can’t guess what the flash will add.
 
Just had a look at a review of the mk2, it's quite honestly a bit of a horror story for those of us who have or are about to have an R5 mk2.

I'm particularly concerned about the lack of "stickiness" on the af, this was one thing I was hoping would be first class especially coming from a 1 Dx mk2 mirror slapper.

I'm in the middle of considering one of those myself, mind me asking where you found such a good deal? (I'm a couple of weeks late from your post so probably doesn't exist anymore, or might have been specific to you I realise :) )

It was from Einfin, grey market seller but highly rated. Currently for sale for £2029 but I had some cash back owed from them which took it down to £1750. :)

It will get there or even lower eventually, as long as they made some excess stock. Z8 is also getting near the magic number; if they are close there is no contest. R5II is tempting but may have to wait for prices to start moving

I'm considering an R8 as an upgrade to a 5Dmk3, mostly for video capability reasons. Has anyone been keeping an eye on used body prices Vs the £1300ish new price, are there decent savings to be had?

Why the R8 rather than a 2nd hand R6?
 
First Impressions: Canon R1 for Live Event Photography in Challenging Theater Environments

As someone who frequently shoots live events in theatres, I’m no stranger to constant lighting challenges: flickering LED lights, banding, and screen artifacts in the background. The Canon R5s served me incredibly well, especially with the autofocus tracking, which was close to 100% reliable. However, the R5 couldn’t fully overcome some of the more difficult lighting issues:

- Anti-flicker mode wasn’t available in electronic shutter mode, which meant I couldn’t shoot silently in theatre environments.
- Banding persisted even in mechanical shutter mode, making certain shots inconsistent.
- Screen artifacts and the difficulty of balancing shutter speed to match lighting frequency (while keeping it fast enough to freeze action) remained constant struggles.

These limitations were one of the reasons that I upgraded to the Canon R1. Here are my first impressions after taking it straight out for a live event shoot.

Straight out of the box, the R1's default settings are solid for general use. However, I quickly switched to manual mode to gain more control over the theatre's tricky lighting. The R1 managed the theatre lighting better largely thanks to anti-flicker mode, which now works even in electronic shutter mode that allows you to make micro-adjustments to shutter speed, such as setting it to 1/101.2. This allows precise synchronization with the flicker frequency of the venue’s lights, reducing brightness fluctuations and ensuring consistent exposures. Combined with silent shooting (just don’t forget to disable the default fake shutter sound), this is a big improvement.

The autofocus system on the R1 is a clear upgrade from the R5. Where the R5 was already impressive with “close to 100%” accuracy, the R1 delivered 100% in-focus shots during my shoot. This wasn’t limited to straightforward compositions or close-ups either. Even with wider-angle shots, where subjects are smaller and more challenging to track, the R1 kept the focus locked on. I did experiment with the eye-control autofocus, which is designed to let the camera track where you’re looking. For my shooting style, however, this didn’t fit well since I’m constantly scanning the scene for action while shooting. I disabled it for now but plan to revisit it after reading the manual to see how I can better integrate it into my workflow.

I’m looking forward to diving into the manual and discovering what else it can do!

For what it’s worth I love the R8. I know the R6 ii is better - but I love everything about the R8 apart from the battery life. But hey, batteries are cheap and small so not a huge deal!
 
I've been doing a lot of travelling recently so the smaller R8 body is quite a big draw over the the R6. I'd been considering a RF-S body but I'm sure I'll regret the image quality coming from a full frame body.

I get that, but honestly it’s the lenses that determine the size of the kit, and whether it’s the faster RF lenses or your old EF lenses on the adaptor, you can’t avoid the bulk (and weight).
On holiday atm and I contemplated leaving the RF 24-70 at home and replace it with the 35mm Art, but once the Art is on the adaptor it’s almost the size and weight of the zoom.
The 50mm f1.8 is my only lens that’s not plenty bigger than its EF equivalent.
I mentioned the R6 as it has the stabilisation which would be useful for video, and as it’s older, there’s more about s/h and I reckon you can get a good one for a grand. It’s by no means a big camera.

This is a thing in which your own personal preference rally matters. I'm happy with a prime in the 28-50mm f1.8/f2 range and can therefore keep the kit quite compact. Other people aren't so lucky.

When I’ve sold the Art, I might think about a 35 f2 and see how I get on.
I loved the 35mm Art shooting weddings, but it’s big and heavy.
I had the small 35mm equivalents on both Fuji crop and canon M so it might be a thing for me.

My most use AF lens at the moment is a compact 40mm f2.5 and I love it, it's one of the best lenses I've ever had but I'm Sony not Canon so it's not a lens for you guys but the general point remains. If you're happy with a small prime you can keep the bulk and weight down.

I still have the plastic fantastic Yongnuo 35 f2 Canon knock-off, and it's surprisingly good value for money.
 
I don't get what the deal is making your kit lighter than your smartphone. Then go to gym and lift 50kg for hours. kind of insane actually. It really shouldn't matter one bit.

My 35 art went as it one of the weakest art in the series. No surprises actually because it was the first through the door. Tamron 35mm f/1.4 replaced and that this is really next level.

You could probably get somewhere in between with the new RF, but at what cost, and only real benefit are in camera profiles, which tamron never bothered to do.

No one is saying a camera and lens can be lighter than a smartphone but if you can lighten the load then why not? Some people like lighter kit, me included. I already have to carry so much shedding unnecessary weight only makes sense.

I do a mix of press ups, sit ups and stretching exercises every day but that doesn't mean I want heavier than necessary kit putting a strain on my shoulder and back.

I'm not arguing against that, but this is rather be all and end all quest for some. The only metric to go by.

For me let's say there is a cutoff where storing lens in a bag takes up 2 or 3 slots and that just really means leaving something else behind. This is where I am likely to just leave it home. That includes the big and soft EF 70-200mm f/2.8 II, or the very seldom used but sharp 400mm f/5.6 which never goes in the bag anyway. Anything up to or at the size of 135mm f/1.8 ART or 85mm f/1.4 ART are fine because they fit in a single size slot. Taking a zoom means 3 other lenses get left and I'm taking a s*** lens with me.
 
On the other hand, I'm of the view that if you need to carry a bit more to get the results you need, then why not? I don't have other stuff to carry. I also prefer to carry primes than zooms.

Sadly it could be the be all and end all for some as some people do have difficulties and we've seen posts about this on this forum. I'm relatively fit but given the choice between a behemoth like an old style Canon FF DSLR and lens and a comparatively svelte modern mirrorless camera and lens I'm going to take the more svelte kit every single time. That way I reduce the strain on my frame and I don't knock children and old ladies over with my DSLR backpack in shops.

Me, I bought it around 6 weeks ago. :)
I've used it at a few sporting events and it's incredible!!! I love the internal zoom and the throw to get from 24-105mm can be done with one short movement of your thumb.

I've just ordered the R1 today so I'm excited to give that a run out, it'll demote my R3 to backup and R5 to spare, but I couldn't resist when I saw it in stock today.
The only other addition I'll be making is the RF 70-200mm internal zoom (same as the 24-105mm 2.8), I love the RF 70-200 but I hate the external zoom.

It's great. I forgot to mention the pre-shoot feature of the R1 in my first impressions. It's a big deal and meant I could shoot less and be confident of getting the peak moments. A colleague has the 24-105 2.8, and I'm quite tempted...but I love the primes, even if it's a bit less convenient.
