Canon EOS R Series Cameras

Is magnesium alloy body really a deal breaker for some? As far as I’m aware, please correct me if I’m wrong, the R7 has a polycarbonate exterior with magnesium alloy chassis beneath. It may not feel as robust but I’m guessing it won’t be too different to the R6. That doesn’t feel like it’s going to fall apart. Polycarbonate exterior may have some advantages in being lighter or less temperature conduction in cold weather.

I do like a chunky camera with a bit of weight, I imagine the R7 will have the same build quality as the 80D / 90D which put me off and swayed me towards the 7D MKII.

Saying that at least the 80D/90D could take a grip which would have made the R7 a bitt better (for some) ... there will always be pro's and con's though.

Some from a recent trip to the Lakes photographing Red Squirrels. It was a good test of eye AF. Have to say I was never a back button focus person for wildlife but will the ease at which you can swap to eye AF it makes sense using back button focus on the AF on button and customise the button to the right of it as eye AF. So easy to swap between them. Eye AF worked so well for the squirrels too.

All of these were taken at 500mm with the RF 100-500 lens on the R6.

Once again click through to Flickr to see them better. Not sure what this site does to the quality when posting via the BB code, they never look as sharp on here.

Sorry for the blunt answer, I was down at a lake photographing terns taking fish.

There are no contacts in the battery compartment to take a grip apparently and it has also been confirmed by several Canon reps.

That’s OK, no offence taken :D

I’ve just seen on the digital picture ‘review’ that they mention there’s nothing to connect the grip to etc.

Seems a bit of a strange decision to me. But there it is…

I’ll have to wait and see what they’re like in hand. As I don’t think I’m gonna want to use a 500mm on one without the balancing of a grip to be honest.

Just pre ordered an R7, so I can come play in here soon too.

Literally just did it, so could be a way down. I went with LCE, they've been great in the past.
Cool.
I went with WEX as i was trading in my 5D4 so got a bit better price.
Its funny but i wasnt that excited when i ordered it, but as the days go on im getting more and more impatient. If im not in the first batch i may well cancel the order and wait a bit, although i dont want to miss out on the free adapter so will still get one before Sept.

Exactly this......I'd been waiting a number of years on it being released and I normally wait on used or grey prices before I order. I normally buy new UK but have bought the odd used or grey item. The adapter swung it though and the R7 has been a long time coming, so I succumbed today. If I get it by mid July, that will be a result.

I kept my 5D, I love that thing, as well as the M5, which I love almost as much but as it stands, I'm a 2 camera man, not counting my film SLR.

I may have a rethink on the M5 when I get my hands on the R7.

Yeah, I’m normally a grey market user for the big purchases, but as an early adopter of the R7 I’m playing safe. Just in case there are teething issues.
I’m a huge fan of the M50, and use it way more than my 5D4. This shows me that I can easily do with it most of the time.
I was hoping the M50mkii was going to be a bigger upgrade, or that there would be a high end M camera, but I guess the R7 is going to be the one that I finally end up with. I just love what mirrorless adds to the mix, and while to seems a steep back from FF, I’ve never really needed it. It was more for the features the 5D4 gave me.
I’ll possibly get a FF R body at some point, but for now I’m keeping my M50 as I have a couple of lovely lenses for it and I can’t use them on the R.

Top front dial / rear wheel next to viewfinder (further down on 7D II)

The R7 is still "missing" a dial compared to the R6 and R5, both of which have both the thumbwheel further down the back (around the SET button) and the horizontal thumbwheel at the top (around the mode button on the R5).

The addition of this top horizontal wheel was one of the big benefits of the R5 and R6 to me as you now have three separate wheels for control (four if you include the one on RF lenses) yet they've taken it away again on the R7.

And made it cheaper

And made it cheaper

Is that what people really wanted though? The R10 covers the "low" end and there doesn't seem to be much of a gap between that and the R7.

So many people were expecting a "crop R5", just as the 7D was a "crop 5D" but the R7 is nothing like that.
I think the R7 should actually have been called an R8 or R9 and the "real" R7 should have been a crop R5 with very similar specs and ergonomics. Had it been, I think Canon could have charged £500 more for it and many would gladly have paid it.

plus a low res EVF & back screen !
For me a very decent EVF is much more important than the rear screen ! ! !
Then move on and dont even think about the R7.
Not everyone needs or wants the same thing. Thats why we have so many choices.
I cant imagine the EVF and LCD would stop anyone from getting the shots they want, plenty of other cameras have lower and that doesnt stop people using them to great effect. They are not ‘low ‘res’, just not the highest res available.

What are the best deals on R7 ATM ( apart from Free Adapter & 50% off new battery ) , has any one seen interest free payments for 12 + months ! ?
Which retailer is offering the best deal ! ?
You could use Paypal and do it in 3 month instalments. Not quite what you’re asking but thats how im doing mine.

All I have found so far is R7 + free adapter for £1,349 with 12 months interest credit over 12 months, so my question are their any better deals than this ! ?
I really could do with 24 months interest free, 36 would be very nice as well !

This is the dilemma I know have as the R7 is not a 7Dii replacement more off a mirrorless 90D hybrid !
The eye / object detect AF is causing me the to think twice, it is the best best and affordable camera with R3ish AF system, or do I wait,..... ! !
I own a 7Dii which I love to bits, however the keeper rate is low ( this is nothing unusual ! ) so for city breaks, holidays, day trips I brought a Sony A6600 which has animal & human eye AF, and what a big difference this makes. As the keeper rate goes from low to easily 85-95% at least on most subjects ! !

I believe people would pay a bit more to have Higher res EVF, CF express twin card slots, better weather sealing. However at the price of £1,345 I think is so tempting people with have it regardless of some of its short comings because of the Eye / Object detect AF is the real selling point ! !

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before - but how do you keep the depth of field preview turned on on the r6 so you see the image as it will turn out before taking it, and what are the drawbacks if any of using this feature.

While you can control whether the EVF and screen simulates the exposure, I don't think there's any way of permanently previewing DoF as this would require the lens to be stopped down which would hamper focusing in some circumstances. Canon AF always operates with the aperture wide open then stops down when the shot is taken. Of course I could be wrong :)

Yeah, the eye/AF stuff is why im getting it. I love my M50 and have been waiting for a big update, which the MKII wasn’t, but really can’t justify a FF R camera, and to be honest I’m quite happy with crop cameras. It was always a bit strange going back to my 5D4 safer using the M50, it seems so ‘old’.
The R7 seems to be the right price for me, takes all my EF/S lenses and has bang up to date features. I’m sure if I had used a higher res screen regularly I might feel it’s something I want, but I only use them to frame and check settings etc, so as long as it’s no worse than my M50 I’m happy.

The EVF is the same as what is in the M50/M5/M6 although it should be quite a bit faster due to the more poweful digic x processor.

Clifton are doing 24 months. 10% deposit I think if I remember correctly. This is what I went for. Just over £50 a month.

Their website is now stating 1 year interest free.
Oh right, I was lucky then and timed that well. Just looked at paperwork and yeah I got 24 months interest free. £134.90 deposit and £50.58 a month. Shame they ain’t offering it now really.

Perhaps apply for a 0% credit card and apply the same repayment schedule to that? There are plenty around - and don’t forget to go through top cash back as well!

Oh,... I did not there is cash back as well, I though canon were just giving the RF to EF adapter away for free ! ?

Full marks to Panamoz, ordered a R5 Monday morning and just had confirmation of delivery tomorrow morning.

I’ve used them quite a bit and always had really good service. Had to send a lens back once and it took 2 days for a full refund from the day I sent it back. Very good service.

Quick question regarding the R6 and video capture.

I've been shooting a lot more video recently and find the video shortcut button (or "Movie Shooting Button" - located on the top next to the lock button) to be really useful instead of rotating the mode dial to come out of stills mode. However, its default setting seems to only have very basic AF and the resolution is set to something other than what I want to use. Is it possible to modify the parameters associated with this button? I couldn't see anything in the manual. Obviously, if you rotate the mode dial and go into movie mode you can set all of the parameters in the menu system, but this doesn't seem to translate to the movie shooting button.

Hope that makes sense and that I'm doing something daft or have missed something obvious! Really enjoying the video out of the R6!

This button is associated with one of the custom modes on the R5, don’t remember which one. It’s in the thread from a few months ago. So the answer is set the video settings you want, save them as C1/2/3 then the handy little button works as you need.
