Canon EOS R Series Cameras

On the topic of used equipment.

Which retailers would you all recommend to use in regards to their “accuracy and reliability” of description of overall condition of the product?

All of my purchases; trades (and one used lens) have been with WEX.
But they don’t currently have what I’m looking for…

@Mike.P I am curious as to how much the prices have gone up. I have a Canon test drive booked for the Easter weekend. So if i'm liking the camera i'll be looking to purchase.

Thanks
Gaz

I have an app on my phone that tracks the R5 price at E-infinity and Panamoz. Both have gone up by similar amounts.

According to CameraPriceBuster the R5 lowest price has been pretty steady for the past few months.. but that is going from the UK retail prices. Grey import prices are different.

However, the RF 24-105 f4 L has gone up a lot in recent months.

I’m surprised the 24-105 f4 has gone up so much but I guess many buy them as part of a kit rather than individually.

I’ve noticed grey prices fluctuate so much. There are probably multiple reasons why they do. Most are probably down to slight fluctuations in currency exchange or stock availability.

I often buy on here but if I can’t then WEX are my go to shop. I’ve used MPB but mostly to trade in. I have used camera jungle in the past and they were ok and as described (lens described as excellent condition). One place I’d never use again is eBay. I’ve found lots poor kit on there and descriptions can be quite far out and not as I’d describe them as on here.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I’ve bought stuff off of here too.

The item I’m considering is the 500mm II at some point.
But it needs to be somewhere willing to take “plastic” means of payment if you get my drift :D

I’ve only ever seen positive opinions on dealing MPB. But they’re all regarding trade ins - rather than actual buying 2nd hand stuff from them.

They’re not exactly a cheap lens to buy in tue best of times - let alone in good condition.
So I’m obviously looking to be a bit careful where I get it from.

London camera exchange are quite good.

I found my RF 24-105L via usedlens.co.uk to find the best price second hand one available. Actually got it from a rental place in London in the end for about the same price that they were selling for on HDEW about a year ago.

Had good dealings with both WEX and MPB myself although a friend did have a problem with a 200-400 he purchased from MPB which turned out to be a Canon development lens and was only found to be when sent to Canon for service.

Gutted i sold my 500 f4 MKII as its such a lovely lens and find i now keep using the 300 f2.8 MKII with the 1.4tc permanently attached. Waiting on a friend that covers Moto GP to let me buy his 400 f2.8 MKII now as he has completely gone over to RF but still has all his EF lenses as backup.

Prices on the big whites now are far more than i am willing to pay for native mount so as long as the EF lenses are serviceable i will stick with the adaptor.

Yeah, WEX is usually where I buy / trade all of my stuff.

They had a 500mm II described “mint - as new” condition on their site until last week.
I had to sit on it until yesterday; when I knew what funds I had available. But it went the day before…

The serviceable time does make me think now when buying them. But I’m sure they’ll be eligible for a few years yet (hopefully)

How would you say the 500mm is in regards to being “handhold-able” on a walk about in comparison to the 300mm 2.8?

It must be the same 500mm II, I saw in Norwich warehouse 2 months ago.

500mm is physically bigger and heavier than 300mm 2.8, if you want to walk around obviously 300mm 2.8 is easier. I can handhold 500mm II for a considerable long time before I have to put it on the ground to relax my left arm lol. You can always bring along your monopod to help with the weight.

The MKII 500 f4 felt like a feather compared to my original 400 f2.8 and i had no trouble carrying the 500 round a race track all weekend and im only 9 stone when wet lol.

Im sure the MKII lenses will remain serviceable for some time yet although it did worry me that they seemed to update the MKII to MKIII fairly quickly before now moving to RF mount only.

My friend still says his RF400 f2.8 is basically the EF400 f2.8 MKIII with the adaptor permanently fitted but apparently they have an extra or quicker A/F servo motor that works on the R3 and future R1 due to power requirements of the dual A/F system.

Think it mentions it in this article

Thanks.

Reason I ask, is I’ve heard differing views saying it’s possible to handhold it for a while. While others say it’s not.

My 200mm (and a 300mm I borrow occasionally) don’t bother me to carry around all day. But it’s nice to know the 500 is at least ‘possible’ to handhold for a bit.

That’s the main reason why I’ve never considered the 600. As much as it’d be nice to have one :)

That’s what I want to hear (although my funds may not agree :D )

I’m around 11 stone (after a decent takeaway) at best. So it’d probably be the same for me in regards to carrying one.

A monopod doesn’t bother me; as I’d expect to require one with something like this.
But I’d prefer it if it’s at least a tad ‘practical’ to lug around for a bit. Which it clearly is.

Do these support full FPS on the R5 and R6 do you know?

Not sure about the R6 or R5 to be honest but did find this link for the R3 and just noticed the 400 f2.8 MKII doesn't support 30fps yet the 300 f2.8 MKII does, guess i will need to save for the 500 MKII again also.

I should imagine, going by that list, it’ll at least support the main 12 fps of the R5 and R6. That’s enough for me.

Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.

The list of lenses supporting 12fps on the R6 are in the manual. The list of prime telephoto lenses are below. The 200-400 f4 and 100-400 mk2 are also listed.

to be honest I think for a lot of people certainly wildlife and bird photographers the R5 would be a better bet than the R3 the extra resolution of the R5 is just so useful if you need to crop certainly the R5 is so good anyway, I just can’t see the need for any more speed
just my opinion though in my limited experience :)

Fair point and resolution wasn't a big point for me in getting the R3 as most the other 1 series cameras previously have been a lower MP count anyway.
Main things for me are the extra weather/dust sealing and battery life but most of all the massive difference in rolling shutter or lack of to be honest.

Ahh I see thanks yes that’s a good point I haven’t seen rolling shutter but haven’t yet tried fast moving birds on the R5 last time I did that was with my 7D2

Morning all. Is anyone having issues with their R6 (or R5) freezing / locking up when in AI Servo? My camera is running firmware 1.5.2. Seems to happen immediately after I swap lenses (RF 100-400 to RF 600 f11) and vice versa. If I stick with one lens, then it just doesn’t seem to happen.

Cheers,

Simon.

No issues so far using that version of f/w on the R6. I have the RF100-400 and many other native lenses, but not the 600mm f11.

I was out at the Rallynuts stages this weekend and I had 2 freezes on the R5 where I needed to battery pull to get the camera working again. It was very dusty though, and these freezes only happened after i'd been showered with layers of dust. So I presumed it was something to do with that....

In terms of those photos above with RF 600mm and the 100-400 - Presume they weren't through fences? I fancied the 100-500 but as I'm not in front of the fences these days I felt the max aperture at the long end (7.1 I think) might be too high an F number to get rid of them... so the RF 600 was out on that count @ F11 as well.

The image with the RF600mm f11 was indeed through a Jurassic Park style catch fence. The 100-400 image wasn’t through a fence.

Cheers,

Simon.

This might be a silly question but can I change focal length remotely on the R5 using an app or remote?

Not focal length but you can change all of the usual stuff (ISO, aperture, shutter speed etc) from the Canon CameraConnect app over either WiFi or Bluetooth.
