Canon EOS R Series Cameras

The Christmas offer is a free hire of 12 days (delivered 22nd Dec collection 4th January). Unsurprisingly there isn’t much left. The only lens I can see for me to hire would the 100-400 EF, but I’d said to myself when recently moving over I’d like a f4 minimum lens so it wouldn’t really to be a lens I should be interested in. The 300mm f4 seems to be too old a lens to be on the hire list.

I can see your point with timing the hire over a weekend you have something going on. I’m tempted to hire the 400mm f4 for a weekend during the deer rut next year. It would be the ideal time as I’d definitely have subjects suitable for that lens and be able to give it a proper test too.

I would like to try the R5 or R6 with RF 100-500L ! !
There is a steam punk shoot I might go to in February and the R5 & RF 85L with be by choice ! ! lol

I hired the R6 and 24-105 f4 in June this year. Have to say I was impressed with the hire so much the Black Friday double cashback deal helped me finally take the step. The hire was nice and easy to do that I’d do it again if I was thinking of buying a lens in the future.

If you know the weekend, you might be able to book that now.

If I remember correctly it's just before they send the equipment
I think they ask for the deposit 7 days before the hire starts.
Thanks. I will have a look at booking it. Makes sense to try it out at a time I’d have a subject to photograph that are what the lens would be for rather than an odd time of the year when I’m scratching around for subjects.

I thought I’d ask what EF to R adapters everyone is using? I’m thinking of either standard EF to R adapter but wonder if the control ring mount is worth. I quite like the control ring position at the end of the lens as I have it set to exposure compensation. I’m not sure if having the control ring on the adapter would be as good. It feels like it’s a bit too close to the camera body and difficult to change when holding the lens.

I guess it depends where your hand naturally falls when you're holding the camera. I have the control ring adapter and find I'm often moving it accidentally! Still, it's useful to have it.

On the RF100-500 the control ring is near the body.

My R came with the ordinary adapter and I ended up buying the control ring ons as I found there weren't enough controls at my fingertips. However now I have the R5, I never use the control ring. I have it set to ISO and only active when I half press the shutter button, because as @magicolor1 says, it's easy to accidentally knock it, but I tend to forget it's there. Perhaps I will find a better use for it one day.

I find the control wheel on my RF 35mm handy for adjusting flash compensation when using TTL which is handy for getting more ambient light when in this mode. I do miss it on my EF lenses as my EF-RF adapter is not equipped with it. I am considering swapping it out with one that has a control ring.

Looks like my R3 should arrive Monday or Tuesday next week.

Having an R5 and an R6 already I know this wasn't an essential purchase, and I'll be selling the R6, but the 1DX was always the camera I longed to own, but having gone to full RF it's no longer an option so I've gone for the R3 and am very excited. :)

The RF 85mm f/1.2L should also arrive around the same time, I think this now fully completes my collection (or at least my wife is hoping so).

R5
R3
15-35mm 2.8
50mm 1.2
85mm 1.2
70-200 2.8
100-500 4.5-7.1

I've been so busy with work over the last 6 months that I haven't been out as much as I would have liked, my NY resolution is to spend a lot more time out with my camera in 2022.

Again the 85mm 1.2 was a 'want' rather than a 'need'. I had it for a weekend on a Canon test drive and really didn't want to send it back. That was over a year ago and I've finally given in. :ROFLMAO:
Arrived today, I'll probably not be able to try it out until Saturday and that'll just be photographing my local parkrun so not really fast action.
This thing is light though!!!

I can't decided between moving on the 600 RF I've got and going for the 100-400 RF....

What’s your primary use of the lens?

do you need the focal reach of the 600 or flexibility with of the 100-400?

Mostly wildlife whenever I do get out.. and just feel the 100-400 might be more use, especially having a better aperture... probably just me “wanting” as I’ve got a perfectly good ef 70-300 usm nano, and it’s only 100mm

The one lens I've yearned after since having it on a test drive weekend from Canon, it arrived today and this pretty much completes my RF collection. I'll try and get some pics 'with' it as soon as possible

This was a tough one as it's not a lens I needed, so I'm being completely honest with myself, this is a pure 'want', it is a thing of beauty though.

Good for you. Sometimes the voice of reason needs to be ignored. How weighty is the R3 compared with the grippeed R6?

Feels better in the hand to me.
I can do some proper weights if you want but I'm sure they're on the internet. But as a general feel the R3 feels perfect in my hand.
A couple of things:
  • The touch control AF-ON button is great, so fast to move the focus points, but I need to stop moving it accidentally
  • I keep going to the top of the camera for the power button, need to re-wire my muscle memory :)
  • I need to setup EYE control AF. have to do it outside in daylight so haven't had a chance yet
  • I like how when in electronic shutter you can select either 30, 15 or 3 fps (by going high shutter+, high shutter or low shutter)

I know this is probably a stupid point but the look of the R3, with an integrated vertical grip, looks so much better than when the grip is attached to the R5 or R6.

Nothing wrong with just wanting something as long as you don't bankrupt yourself. Its a pretty awesome lens and better than the EF version wide open.

Regards...

Got a quick play with my mates R3 and RF 400 2.8 at the football the other night, EVF is superb - camera seems just the right size to me - my 1dx seemed pretty big and heavy when I handed the R3 back.

I had one of those.
It is without doubt, the best lens I've ever owned.
Plus it's practically flawless. If there was a downside, it's very fat and if you have fat fingers it's a tight squeeze between the the barrel and the grip of the R5.
It may be more comfortable with the R3 though.

Cannot wait to see some pictures from this lens and your R3.

Honestly, it's like a piece of art, when it's on the R3 it looks immense and the balance feels right.
Obviously I haven't had a chance to properly use the R3 or the 85mm 1.2 yet but I had a wander into Liverpool last night to see the Ice Wonderland and got a couple with the R3 and 85mm.

I will be testing an R5 after the weekend for two weeks... I have 3 floodlight junior games on mon, tue and wed plus two indoor dog shoots(100 dogs total) on wed and thur.. so quite a busy week up to christmas.. I should know quite a lot

I will be testing in mechanical shutter only the first week and the testing is for high ISO usage.. Thats the only reason I am thinking of getting one... Everyhting else I am happy wiht current kit.. I get decent results and dont want to change.. But my ISO 25600/51200 jobs should be improved.. we will see :)

Hmmm, if high ISO is your main criteria then I'd look at the R6 or the R3.
I currently have the R5, R6 and R3 and from my own experience the R3 is best, R6 second as it out performs the R5 (in my opinion) in noise management.
I will be selling my R6 in the next week or 2 now I have the R3.

I'm assuming for sports you won't want the 45MP?
All the sports stuff I've done I use my R6 as I certainly don't need the high MP.

Its the 45mp thats attracted me.. I dont need files bigger than 2000 pixels at longest ege from a job using iso 51200... being able to downsize the pic to 25% should lose a heck of a lot of noise.. how would that compare to an r6 file at 2000 pixels ?

During daylight the added bonus of a bit more crop from on end of pitch to another on a 400mm :)

Amazing isn't it.
It would be hard to take a bad picture with the 85 1.2
The lens basically stayed on my R5.
A tempting update to my 85mm f/1.2 MKII EF lens. Getting critically sharp results without motion blur takes a bit of work and CA is quite noticeable at wide apertures. Any experience on how the new lens compares?

The RF 85 1.2 is light years ahead of the EF.
Sharp corner to corner wide open.
Very little to no CA.
Image stabilised.
Incredible Bokeh.
Basically no light fall off at the edges.

What's not to like (asides the eyewatering price)

Seriously thinking about investing in RF glass next year. 85mm or 70-200mm
Would be my first choices. It seems
a shame only having one lens - the 35mm
F/1.8 which isn’t even an L lens.
