Canon EOS R Series Cameras

It's a disaster. We've had to totally stop accepting orders from Europe as our customers are being charged clearance fees and import charges even when there is no duty to be paid. An order to France for £200 just incurred €84 fees (€66 government charges + €15 UPS charges + €3 TVA).

If only someone had warned us

Is the short supply due to peeps just sticking one on every EF lens they own instead of buying RF glass. Before the R5/6 there used to be lots of them around. so just goes to show the popularity of these new cameras

yeah and i think it took a while for the penny to drop and people to realise that the performance of adapted glass is so good on the new cameras.

The R5 is now available for the free Canon 48 hour test drive (R6 to follow). Need to register and leave credit card deposit, but seems like a good scheme. Also includes some RF glass, adapters etc.
Ideal if you’re thinking of buying but want to try first.

Mmmm - if only the free test drive included an adaptor so I try it with my 400 f2.8 - good to see it added to their test drive program though

Edited to say - scrap that - I should have checked page two of the lenses

Thanks for that, R5 and adapter booked for my holiday weekend in March (y)

I tried a few lenses on my R5 and was quite disappointed.

I'm very surprised. It's the best canon camera body I've had and I've used with EF lenses from 11mm to 600mm! Can you share examples to illustrate the problems you are having?

Nice shot......just out of interest do you use back button focus......?
Not on this shot. This was first time I‘d taken it out so was setting it up to my liking (though frankly it was pretty damn good sootb).

But no trouble tracking the eye of a single gull flying around within about 20 other birds on the shutter button, quite amazing.

I struggled a bit at first using the shutter button.....seems better for birds / animals using servo af, back button focus and a dedicated button to switch eye detection on and off.....still getting the hang of it though......feels strange letting the camera do the work.....still try to centralise the screen and what would have been the Central African point on the subject eye which isn’t actually necessary....

Really? All the EF lenses I've tried have worked amazingly well. Which lenses have been disappointing?
I bought and rented a few including the mk2 and mk3 70-200, mk2 100-400, 100mm macro, sigma art 85mm, sigma 150-600. None of them were sharp and looked like they were back focusing. Bought another ef to rf off here and had the same issue. Bought the sigma dock, updated lenses and no different. My RF lenses were perfect but half the appeal for me was adapting ef lenses to help the switch as the rf are expensive and hard to find, I got lucky finding a 100-500.

Being able to use EF lens especially telephotos is definitely a very big attraction for me too. I'd never be able to afford the latest ones like 600mm f4 but some older used EF 500mm f4 are very much affordable.

Just in case anyone (@isobarik maybe?) is thinking of selling an RF adapter, I've had a wanted post running in the Wanted section for a while now :)

I bought one off Ebay when I was thinking of buying the R then decided it wasn't for me so sold it back on Ebay for silly money. Now I have the R5 coming in March for a test drive I am hoping I don't regret getting rid of it :D

Isn't it physically impossible for a lens to 'back focus' on a mirrorless camera?

Anyone here use the RF 85mm 1.2 (non ds)?
My R5 will be in my hands in two days time with the above lens but I've only ever seen samples on review sites.

If anyone has any real world examples I'd love to see them.

My thanks in advance.

I think @Hanley is one of the lucky ones who has one

Not yet I'm not. I've been waiting for it to come back in stock with either E-Infinity or Panamoz, but now I think I'll probably hang fire 6 months or so and let Brexit and the whole issue settle down a bit.
I had it on a free weekend from Canon for a test drive, but that was before I bought the R5 so I only used it on my R.
That being said it was an amazing lens, I just decided at the time (when E-Infinity had the 50 and the 85 in stock) that I'd get more use by buying the 50 first, and I was right.

I've just checked my Lightroom catalog and I have 42 pics taken with the 85mm, I'll dig a couple out and post them on here.

You are not going to be disappointed :)

Do any of you guys own the RF 70-200 2.8, that have gone from the older Mark II or III EF variants?

Long story short. I now have just over £1300 in credit from trading some of my old kit in.
But there’s not really much that I can think to get with it, apart from possibly chopping in my current MK2 version, and getting the new 2.8

I’ve always found my current copy pretty stellar in terms of IQ on my R bodies.
And (apart from the obvious weight and size benefits) was wondering if you’d all recommend it as an upgrade in IQ etc.?

I really like the rf version for its portability but can’t say I noticed a big difference in iq.
It’s also slower through the zoom range than the ef version. I’d only change for the weight and size advantage.

I thought so but it was missing focus a lot and when looking closely that’s what it looked like to me. The RF lenses were perfect but was never satisfied with EF lenses.

Thanks very much. I’ll have to have a think about it then.
Not really looking to add any lenses to my collection, but rather replace current ones if anything.

Morning all...is anyone using an R5 / R6 with a 500f4LIS Mk1 for wildlife and if so, what sort of results are you getting?

Most of the wildlife images I'm seeing are from the Mk2 versions of the 500 / 600f4's.

Cheers

Andy...

That's interesting, I haven't noticed that.
I bought it in December 2019 and my impression when I started using it for running photography, which I used to use the EF II version, was it was quicker to lock focus.
I'm not sure I noticed any difference in image quality, if any it'll come from the R5 rather than the lens, but overall, when counting the smaller size to put in your bag and the fact it's lot lighter then it's definitely a great lens to have in your collection.

Sorry-didn’t mean focus speed. I meant physically turning the the zoom ring. Takes 2-3 turns to go from 70-200 and back where as on the ef it’s 1.

Using R6 and RF100-500 any recommendations for AF setting Auto, 1,2 etc for birds/wildlife, seems to be a bit slow at locking onto eye/body, birds in flight or stationary?

Hi all
I'm a long term Fuji user. However, since lockdown, I've only taken around 150 photographs with my X-T4 (lots of reasons why). I still like the output from the system but I've always had an interest in improved autofocus, especially eye af and having an active dog I want the easiest camera to nail focus when tracking. I've had Sony Aii in the past but I don't like Sony colours and I have limited interest in post-processing.

This has brought me to the dark side ;) and looking at the Canon R6. However, before GAS takes over I want to be sure that the eye AF is significantly better than my X-T4 and that anyone who was with Fuji and went to Canon was happy with the jpeg output?

i put the eye af up there with the best available. no issues shooting wide open and nailing focus.

The way I do it with the R5 and the 100-500 is have the AF-ON button set to focus (back button focus) and then set the * button to Eye AF.

You can then position the camera, use the AF-ON button to set the focus on the bird, then use the * button to activate eye tracking.
I may not have explained that very clearly but there are some good videos on YouTube showing how to do it.

I used the XT3 and the XT4, alongside the EOS-R and R5.

I'd say the Canon, especially the R5 and R6, auto focus speed and eye tracking capability, is streets ahead of anything Fuji can offer at the moment.
Since getting the R5 I've now sold all my Fuji kit.
