Canon EOS R Series Cameras

I can't find an R5 on HDEW. Must have gone out of stock again.

A few retailers seem to have them at 99 quid, guessing others are using their stock to bundle with r5/6

b****r. I know there’s a wait, but a couple of months...

I’ve traded a few things in to them over the last week or so looking to put an order in for one.

Was the email more of a ‘cover their backsides’ kind of estimate, or are they really that far back ordered?

- here's what Wex replied a couple of days ago when I asked for an update on my trade-in order placed mid-August for an R5:

"We have recently received a relatively large shipment , I think of around 40-50, and we are expecting further deliveries over the next 2-3 weeks, but we still have orders dating back to mid July, so although we are unable to give confirmed delivery dates still, it is likely that we are looking at another couple of months, at least for you order, unless Canon drastically improve supply."

Yeah that's why I wasn't accepting offers, figured it would probably sell for a decent price given the difficulty in sourcing new ones.
It was only sitting on the shelf so a bit more money in the lens coffers. :)

Looks like it’ll be a bit of a wait then :)

I was expecting the 6 to take the pressure off of the back order of the 5 once it was released. What with it being significantly cheaper and stuff.

But clearly not...
 
I have 6 adapters - need to get them moved while the moving's good

The idea was that I would leave one on each my EF lenses

but going totally RF now (apart from the 100mm macro)

brewing up a sale

.... That's crazy! I have one which came with my EOS-R and I never used it once I got the Control Ring EF-RF Adapter. The Control Ring version was invaluable because of its extra options. I still have my EOS-R kit and haven't used it since last November - I must get around to selling it but don't like eBay.

Surprised to read that you are selling it already; you seemed very happy with it. Hopefully, Olympus will survive their current travails.

.... I bought the EOS-R when it first came out and so have had good use of it with all sorts of lenses mounted and on wildlife trips overseas. I still love Canon, I really do, but the Olympus system suits me better personally and is far more enabling (for me). I just bought the Olympus 100-400mm (200-800mm) and it's excellent!

Olympus "survive current travails"? - I'm not in the least bit worried and have every confidence they will survive long enough for my shooting lifetime.

Well, I have kept my Olympus system but haven't added anything to it for some time. I am intrigued by the R5 but the price needs to drop a bit first and the lenses seem both expensive and very heavy so changes here for now.

.... What do you mean by "reasonably priced"? The high quality Canon lenses cost what they do for very good reasons. Lenses other than matching brand to body are always compromised - Such compromises might be acceptable but don't make sense if you are shooting with a high quality body - A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. In my opinion.

WoWza. That's a sweeping generality and IMO very possibly wrong in some cases. Just look at the quality non Canon lenses that are available. The only advantages camera marque lenses can automatically offer over 3rd party lenses are surely communication and protocol related and that could certainly be the case with Canon and others who don't tell 3rd parties how their systems work necessitating the 3rd parties to back engineer. Focus performance springs to mind. Compromising on image quality for the nth degree of focus performance with Canon lenses may be the smart thing to do in specialist scenarios that push the focus systems to the limit, birds in flight and similar things spring to mind, but for many people the focus performance of back engineered 3rd party lenses offering superior image quality may be perfectly adequate and of course some of the very best lenses are MF, and not made by Canon.

Sorry to intrude in this thread but that was IMO such a sweeping generalisation that I felt the need to add.... balance. Surely the best way forward is to assess your own wants and needs and buy the best at the price you're willing to pay regardless of marque.

In my opinion I think it is wiser to buy matching marque and I say that in spite of my current macro rig being a Canon EF 100mm F/2.8L IS mounted on an Olympus E-M1X via a Metabones Adapter. The rig is compromised by not being able to focus stack.

What was the last sentence in my post you are responding to? :

A Canon EF 600mm F/4, which I recall is the lens you referred to, is never going to cost as little as £3-4K new. It all depends how much you value your photography and what funds you have available. To say otherwise implies that anyone spending more than what you consider 'reasonable' is being foolish.

Ask yourself what you would consider to be a 'reasonable' price to pay for a new Aston Martin, for example. Is it unreasonable to pay a six figure sum for a car? Absolutely not - It's all relative to what funds you have.

I highlighted it but just in case you can't see the highlighted section I'll copy and paste below...

When people express certainties I tend to question so your assertion that "Lenses other than matching brand to body are always compromised" caught my eye. Your statement may be true in some ways as Canon keep secrets and non Canon people have to back engineer what Canon will not divulge and that could well impact on focus performance which is important for birds in flight and other focus critical scenarios. I can't think of anything else that is crucial here and focus does seem to be the obvious thing. Maybe there are other things too and I do think image quality and maybe other factors too need to be at least in the equation.

I think "Lenses other than matching brand to body are sometimes compromised in some ways" may be a sefer statement.

For example and my last point on this. I have a Sony camera. Sony don't keep as many secrets as Canon and 3rd party makers therefore have a better chance of making lenses with good focus performance. I have a selection of Sony AF lenses but the best lens I own and in fact the best lens I've ever used is a Voigtlander 50mm f2 APO Pro Lanthar. The Sony 55mm f1.8 has better focus performance (the Voigtlander 50mm f2 is MF) and choosing the Voigtlander is a compromise in that respect but for instances in which MF is adequate choosing the Sony 55mm f1.8 over the Voigtlander 50mm f2 compromises on image quality.

I take your point about reasonable being subjective but you’ve made quite the assumption here. At no point did I say, or imply anyone was foolish for spending any amount, I just asked a question. Hell I spend more on camera gear than most professionals, so I’d be the last person to judge.

I’ve seen second hand 400 f2.8 lenses for 3k, add a teleconverter and I’m there. I just wondered how others would do it without spending 10k (as it’s not my usual area of photography and would only be for occasional use).

However, I have never been one to always play it safe - Except perhaps when buying lenses to match my camera body? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

All I'm really saying is that in my opinion it's much wiser to buy matching brands and that it has nothing to do with cost.

.... Sorry if I may have slightly misunderstood your post - I had assumed you were referring to prices for new unused lenses.
