Canon EOS M Series Cameras

Hi guys. Im looking at buying a compact camera system for a trip to NYC this October, and from then on as a travel camera. I need something that is good in low light situations for Times square and cityscapes etc. I also would like to fit an ND filter screw on for some LE shots. Can you advise if you think the Canon EOS M100 with kit lens is up to the job, and if you are aware of any deals UK. Many thanks.

I love making mine the 15-45 is fine but not sure about low light. I would recommend the 22f2 pancake for low light.

Think hdew do the combo pack for about £439

Just came across this video of an (not freely available yet) speed booster for ef lenses on the ef-m mount.

View: https://youtu.be/cIcbU6aznNk

.... Okay but I don't see the point. The M5's standard crop-sensor offers a closer view and I doubt very much if the third-party booster will result in full-frame sensor image quality.

EF L lenses work perfectly well on a crop-sensor body such as the M5.

Keith that photo got an Explore rating ,that’s why it has so many views.

....Yes, as you know but Keith @Cagey75 might not, Flickr's Explore invited my photo and it has a very large following which in turn exposes a photo to a much greater audience. You have to be invited (I think) to Explore and I consider it very encouraging praise because they are quite high in their standards.

Perhaps a more meaningful assessment of an image's 'success' is not so much the number of Faves but what percentage they are of the number of views. Either way I just carry on and am pleased whenever I have images invited onto Explore and I don't do any analysis. As I have email notifications switched on it can actually be a bit of a nuisance!

I have slung my Explore invited images into their own album : https://www.flickr.com/photos/114775606@N07/albums/72157686132840835/with/43626897931/

And I also have an EOS M5 album on Flickr : https://www.flickr.com/photos/114775606@N07/albums/72157683996949495

yes it’s good to see what the canons and some skill can do

....Many thanks indeed - Your praise is much appreciated!

I think they go automatically into explore after selection, I've only ever had a few on there but it is satisfying :) It's a cracking image so I shouldn't be so surprised, it's just the numbers are huge, impressive.

I’ve always liked Canon colours and have been very pleased with results from the little camera.

It is inspiring to see such good photos on here and this is the first time in ages I’ve felt no desire to jump ship

Ive been in Gran Canaria for the past weekm and took my small Nissan i450 flash. I really struggled to get a decent fill flash going on. The theory seems easy but the practice isnt quite as smooth. Using the Canon App on my iphone as a trigger it was hit or miss if HSS would work. More ruined shots than keepers. I ended up not bothering. Ill have to keep practicing.
I got back this morning and so far haven’t looked at the images, but I went straight out to the Gumbasll 3000 event at Covent Garden (not slept of over 36 hours now).

I took my 18-135, 70-300L and 11-22. All three worked really well. I would say this is the first time ive used the 11-22 because i needed it, and not to justify owning it. I wont bore you with too many, but here are a few that i like. Ill probably post one or two more once ive gone through them all.

I'm quite than happy to see more ... something else I would like to see "live" :)
Cool. Once ive gone through them ill post a few more to Flickr and link to them here.
Ive gone to this event before, and also the Modball Rally. The MBR is every year, so its getting boring now. I missed it this year, owning to not reading the change of venue and going to the other side of London lol.

A few from the holiday in Gran Canaria. In this light even a slow lens like f/6.3 has an easy life, at least if just capturing moments and scenes. As you can see, we had a drone with us. My son flew it over out resort and the shore line. The footage was really good. It’s an amazing device. Not sure i would personally trust it going so far out of eyesite, but he has full confidence in it.

Nice, made me want to suddenly go for a swim, that pool looks inviting!

Is the M50 your main camera or you use Canon dslr also? If the latter, how do you find they compare?

That pool was definitely inviting.

Well, i have a Canon 5D4 and some nice L lenses, but since getting my M50 back in May ive not touched the 5D4. So yes, i do have a DSLR but that camera isnt my main camera at the moment.

My kit is now M5/6/50 plus lenses as need.

Problem is getting out. A while back I reported that I received a shin injury when I was on my bike and gothit by a car.

The shin has proved to be a problem so, motorhome now in safe store in Ireland and I am back in UK having a pile of scans to help my orthopaedic surgeon to sort out why a hairline fracture in my shinbone (tibia) since i was hit by a halfwit car driver.

So my M kit is ornamental currently, right leg, auto both car and motorhome not usable by me [emoji853]

Back on track - I am finding the draw back to my DSLR kits is fading.

The sell off is on the horizon!

Finally

The M5/50 comparison, so far, -is I am beginning to prefer the M50! Colour me surprised but the why is the M50 with my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 ART just feels better.

Hospital in 2 hours... if it’s not a car it’s a sodding motor bike as happened on my previous trip!

Given the results popping up on here - Canon Full Frame mirrorless anyone?

When i had my Sony a6000 i loved using it so much that i was getting to the point of selling my 5D3, i just couldn't see a good enough reason to keep it. I do find that as our winters approach i tend to gyrate back to FF though, mainly for the faster lenses and less noise at high ISO. This winter will be my first with the M50 so ill see how it goes. Who knows, i might finally get rid of my Canon FF DSLR. And yes, definitely interested in getting a Mirrorless FF at some point. Im not worried about camera specs, other than what lenses will work. If i can use my L lenses, or an adaptor then im in. I bet it wont be cheap though.

Sorry to hear you are still having health issues. I have a mate who worked for a shipping company and a few years ago as they were loading some containers on to his ship one of them clipped a crane. All hell broke loose and he was hit on the shin by a steel girder. He still cant walk properly and keeps getting infections in it. Sorry, not much help there, but i see how frustrated he gets not being 100% mobile. We used to go on photo walks around London etc, but he finds it difficult to walk far, so i feel your pain (just not the physical one).

Oh, by the way, Canon have posted a firmware update for the M50. Nothing major and it hasnt fixed my connection issues.

Not sure if anyone uses Cascable for image transfer to IOS devices, i dont think its been mentioned in here, but that now supports .cr3 file transfer over WiFi. If they can do it why cant Canon eh?

Oops not sure why it is only showing the link & not the pics, clearly made a schoolboy error so will try again

When you click the share arrow to the lower right of the image, make sure it's set to copy the 'BBCode' - then select the size - usually medium 800 x on here and just copy and paste the link for each image in turn

Thank for your thoughts Dave. Got given a wheel chair yesteday so not great, until I sat in it. My son wheeledme to the hospital car park and suddenly I had a different perspective!

Will hopefully find a ‘pusher’to take me out in the local town later today! Tempted to use just the M6/22 conbo (subtle).

I think I would be interested in a FF Mirrorless Canon!

Thank you Cagey, will give it another go

Great timing Mike, very cool shot.

The internet seems to be building up for a Canon FF, but i can imagine sites like dpreview will go in to meltdown with people saying how Canon have lost the lot and dont care about their customers etc the moment the specs are out lol.

I guess id better start boxing my 5D4 up soon though, its not going to be cheap IMO so funds will need to be raised.

Mate, if you are in a wheel chair you can take the big stuff out, you wont have to carry it :-)

Agreed but finding it difficult on the assistance front.

Stuck for a driver, loads of hospital appointments and adjusting to things. My Ford Kuga just sits their laughing at me and the day a good friend popped over to take me out, it p***ed down raining.

My kit is sparkling clean, all batteries fully charged, bag laid out ‘properly’

Settled down with sriting a couple more chapters of a book I am writing.

I am being patient!
