Canon EOS M Series Cameras

Filters. Let's talk fiters...! I'd like to at least get a 10 stopper and a circular polariser for a couple of my M lenses. I've already got a UV for the 22mm that came with it, but given the odd size I might leave it for now. So far we have the following filter sizes (annoyingly):-

18-55 kit lens 52mm
11-22 UWA 55mm
55-200 52mm
22mm pancake 43mm

Why oh why did they make the UWA 55mm!... Anywho, are any of the following any good?

I've always bough Hoya in the past. I'm not saying they are any good, but for the few times I've used them they have been ok. Given that there are a million and one filter manufacturers out there it seems a bit daft asking if there are any other options, but do people have their favorites?

Any recommendations/ones to avoid?
 
There are some pics from an m3 here. Not convinced high iso performance is that much better than the current M, probably hard to tell with no side by side m1 shots for comparison. Look forward to seeing more reviews.

In the mean time, pushed my M at the nrm at york yesterdaywith some 6400 isho shots.

Very rarely use filters these days, but when I did it was either hoya or a B+W, never really used anything different. I had anew hoya polariser at christmas I havn't even used yet,Ineeded it yesterday and forgot it! That nd seems a good price. Though there was a thread for camdiox filters on here somewhere who do nd filters, might be worth asearch for the thread.

With regard to Polarisers, I use the exact same ones as you linked to and like them a lot.

For 10 Stop's I usually use the SRB ones. Really good without the cost:

I have both in 52mm & 55mm. On the 22mm I use a 43mm - 52mm reducer:

Edit - There are loads of fake Hoya polarisers about. I bought direct from Amazon to avoid these.

for my 11-22mm, they seem fine, multi coated, although I haven't tried the ND as yet. They're Hoya, but made in the Phillipines, not sure if this is relevant ? I've taken quite a few shots with the UV and CPL and I can see no detriment to the IQ.

Yeah I've done that before on numerous occasions! Granted, the circ pol will probably get very little use but handy on rare occasions. Thankfully the filters are small on the M, so I'd be happy to carry a few around all the time for those rare times when they are needed. I'll check out camdiox, thanks.

Ah yes, I think I read a thread on SRB filters some time ago on here - thanks I'll check them out. Yep, I'd never buy a filter off ebay. Who knows what glass is in it. Good idea regading the step down adapter, I'll grab one of those too (y)

Thanks, that may save a few quid and includes a pouch! Is the ND filter an 8 stopper (i.e. ND400)?

Agreed!

I have the 10-22 too. Heavy beast and super on my 50D.
I also have the EF-S 10-18 and it's a lot lighter and easier on the M.

Until the fine people at Canon spring some new M lenses on us, and no matter how much I want the 11-22, I am not investing another penny in their products.

They need to be serious with the M System but a single prime is not good enough for the M3 to be paired with. (Especially given the quality of the M + 22mm legacy!).

Still love the M kit but I am ready for a full commitment to 'the lighter bag', Canon have 3 months then I am moving to Fuji/Olympus/Sony if nothing appears.

Going back off M3 talk, a quick lens question for you guys :)

Just how good is the 22mm? Reason i ask is that I'm going to a wedding as a guest in a couple of weeks and want to take a camera with me. I don't really know the couple all that well (girlfriend's cousin) although i do know plenty of other more immediate family that are going so would like some shots from the day. At the moment i've got the 18-55 which i find great, but won't fit in my suit pocket without a giant bulge so i was thinking of the 22mm would be a nice "compromise". I use that in inverted commas as i don't think it's the right word :LOL:
My concern with the 22mm is reading one of the initial reviews i looked through some samples and was a little underwhelmed (IMO the 18-55 did a better job :confused: ) but then looking through Flickr the images seem to be a lot better but then you don't know how much PP they've been through. I've recently bought some expensive lenses for my SLRs which i don't know if they're distorting my view because they're really very good but also awfully expensive :LOL:

Not knowing the couple very well i don't want to turn up to their wedding with a D700 and 35mm 1.4 combo :lol:

The other thing driving me is that i've just upgraded my phone, and after trading my old one in i have the exact right amount to buy one from ebay :D Just buy one and don't look back? It's the images in here that have impressed me and is making me want one :LOL:

Just buy one, it is a cracking little lens. I'm not going to say that it is as good as some of the much more expensive lenses but for the money it is unbeatable and delivers great results even when shooting wide open.

The 22mm makes the m my kit lens is under 6 inches of dust and will probably never be used again!

I bought one just before Christmas for £50 and it never left my camera. It was so good inside (normal tungsten lighting) that I never never used the flash (still haven't). I'd say just buy one, take it down the pub one night before the wedding and try it out. If you don't like it, I'll buy it off you and use it as a spare I like it that much! For £50 odd quid you can't go wrong. As mentioned, it's not perfect and won't perform miracles, but it is f2 and the quality is very good. You'll need to PP to remove noise at high ISO in low light, but that goes for any M lens..
 
Yeah the 22mm is excellent. Looking through my aperture library most of my best shots on the M were taken with it. I spent 4 days in Amsterdam last year the only lens I used was the 22mm. Its a cracking little lens.
 
It's probably about time I posted a few photos in this thread - nothing by the standards of some of the great and good on here, but just some shots from around the house etc (only had the M a month or so, so looking forward to some decent weather to get out and about).

All are using the 22mm and have minimal editing, probably only a slight crop and some noise reduction.
 
Anyone using the 40mm EF pancake on their M? I have pancake lust (mmmm... Pancakes....!)

Hi

The EF 40mm was a regular on my M last September during my European trip. Suits the M perfectly and is lightweight and very sharp on same, even with the adapter. Discrete like the 22mm but was more noticeable with the adapter. With the tripod mount connected to my lightweight Manfrotto monopod it made a nice balanced combo for church inteiors especially with a bit more reach than the 22mm.

I have ignored the EF-S 24mm pancake as the extra 2mm offers nothing for the M user.

You can pick up a 40mm for £80-90 used and it's sharp and at f/2.8 wide open good in low light situations where flash is not permitted or the scene needs available light.

Stick the kit zoom on the M and scope the frame capture the 40mm will give you against the 22mm. For me it was an easy choice, I had the 40mm before the M came into my life..... I think it a worthwille keeper for my 50D and EOS 5 35mm film camera which just happens to also fit and suit the M.

They seem to turn up regularly for sale on TP but Argos were selling cheap brand new via their EBay outlet 6-8 weeks ago.

Annoyingly I missed the Argos deal, but there's a 'UK seller' on eBay selling them for ~£85 new so I might snap one up when I get paid. As you say, it's discrete, light, reasonably fast and the reviews say that it's sharp too. Shame it's not 50mm, but I already have the f1.4 for portraits etc.

Just remembered that an Amazon seller had the 40mm in white before Christmas.

I had the 50mm f/1.8 nifty with me on my trip but dropped it and smashed it. Didn't miss it much. Got another one but not used it on the M. I use it on my 50D now and then.

Our discussions earlier re the M3 brought up a desire for some prime M lenses. For me a f/1.8 (or faster) 50mm EE-M would be on my shopping list. That said, the clock is ticking on my M kit. It seems that on the face of it Canon are keen on their CSC pathway but without the smaller lens roll out then I may well be going to Olympus (today but Fuji next week?).

I know what you mean about lenses, a couple more fast primes for the M system would be nice. That said it would just leave me tempted to spend more money and I suffer GAS badly enough already.

I have been round the houses with CSC options having had Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic over the last few years. I can honestly say that Olympus would be bottom of the pile for me purely down to the menu system and physical controls which I could never get used to - but the Oly 45 f1.8 is one of those lenses that I struggled to sell and would love to own again. I reckon if you do decide to leave the M behind then Fuji is the one to look at first. They have some nice cameras and some amazing lenses - I have used the 18, 35 and 60 primes and they are all great (I really love the 35 f1.4) there are some other primes that are very tempting too. Not sure how I have managed to resist the 56 f1.2.

Much as I like the M if it wasn't such a good camera for digiscoping I would probably have ditched it by now (but no doubt would have bought another on the Argos deal). I keep the 22mm on one M for a 'pocketable' camera and the 40mm pancake on the other. The 40mm is a cracking lens and is the ideal on for me to use when shooting through the scope.
