Canon EOS M Series Cameras

I need to buy a lens now that it's unlikely I'll be buying the M3 in a hurry. Trying to find the 11-22 at a reasonable price but I'm failing miserably. Reading reports of people getting stung for tax a lot more from Hong Kong sellers on eBay. Is it worth the risk?

Ha ha, me neither. I'd rather trust an independent review rather than a Canon video tbh.

Yes, the existing EVF-DC1 is compatible with the M3. I read somewhere that it will be included in a limited edition kit. No idea if that will be available in the UK though.
Apparently the M3 isn't going to be available in the US ? So where are they going to include the EVF in a kit ?

What sort of money are you looking to pay for one Ed, I'm still considering the M2 kit.

I was hoping to get one for around the £250 mark, but that may be pushing it. I was in negotiation with a guy on eBay selling a UK 11-22, but in waiting for the M3 announcement it seems to have sold. Hong Kong prices on eBay seem to be sub £250.

I bought mine from Hong Kong on eBay. Tax bill was £92.50.

Ouch, that's what I'm worried about. Maybe I need to hang tight and see what crops up (UK) on eBay. There's a Hong Kong seller quoting £219, and they claim to ship the lens as a 'gift', but they have low feedback and it all sounds a bit dodgy...

Japan? Far East? Certainly not here at the moment. They haven't even announced a body-only option yet!

I went for the M2 kit with the 11-22mm which I was planning to buy anyway, best price in the UK was £330 ish for the 11-22mm, I got the M2 kit for £599 from Digitalrev, I sold on everything but the M2 body and 11-22mm for £220, net result I got the M2 for £49, result :) Don't you just love man maths o_O

Bought the 11-22 for £290 UK price just before Christmas, best eBay price was £260 at the time. Bristol cameras have it for £305 + £10 delivery

Amazon's best price was £261 back in October

They seem to have a kit with the 22mm, the kit lens and the 11-22mm. It's £629 so it would be be a big outlay, but it could be a possible route. Thanks for that.

Edit: knowing me I'd just end up keeping it all though!

If you're thinking of importing the M2, it might be worth importing the M3

Amazon Japan prices:

https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http://www.amazon.co.jp/Canon-%E3%83%9F%E3%83%A9%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AC%E3%82%B9%E4%B8%80%E7%9C%BC%E3%82%AB%E3%83%A1%E3%83%A9-%E3%83%96%E3%83%A9%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF-EVF%E3%82%AD%E3%83%83%E3%83%88-EOSM3BK-BODYEVFK/dp/B00T90FB8I&edit-text=

M3 + EVF = 58,126 Yen = £320
M3 + 18-55 + 55-200 = 94090 = £518.45
M3 + 18-55 + 55-200 +EVF = 97006 = £534.52
M3 + 18-55 + 22 = 83398 = £459.53
M3 + 18-55 + 22 +EVF = 86314 = £475.60
M3 Body Only = 55210 = £304.21

Considering the cheapest I've seen the EVF in the UK is about £200, this makes the M3 about £100.

Sorry UK dealers but that's just to much of a difference. Even adding another £100 in taxes it's ridiculously cheap.

Not sure how easy it is to order from Amazon Japan but if it's difficult I bet other importers will have pricing soon.

EDIT - Can't order direct from Amazon Japan to a UK address. I just tried
EDIT 2 - Maybe an option though:
http://biginjap.com/en/content/16-forwarding-terms

EDIT 3 - I've just emailed this parcel forwarding company that seems to have a pretty good rep:
https://www.tenso.com/en/
I've asked if firstly Amazon will deliver direct to them and how much to fully insure my purchase.
Obviously a bit more research to do but £320 with the EVF + say £100 taxes? That's half the UK price.

That's a very interesting post. Just shows how much over the odds we pay. At £599 I probably wouldn't be tempted as its my second/travel camera, especially with another £200 ish for the EVF. However at approx £400ish (including taxes etc) with EVF, now that would be tempting.

Wow o_O If we can get it at those prices I will be buying on release! Let us know what else you find out..

Okay, the Japan prices were too good to ignore for me so I've done a little research.

The parcel forwarding company I linked to above (tenso) seem to have a good reputation and have been around a good while. In fact the only negative things about I could find was a little high costs on shipping (we are talking about literally a few £'s here). So I've registered for an account with them and they have supplied me with a Japan shipping address for Amazon. Again, from what I've read, they are quite thorough on checking you are who you say before shipping to you and require id. I see this as a good thing.

They ship via a variety of methods, the best of which seems to be EMS. The estimated cost of shipping will be 580 Yen service charge + 5620 Yen Courier cost (I estimated total weight at 2KG) + 100 Yen for extra insurance (you get 20,000 yen insurance included in the courier cost then 50 Yen for each additional 20, 000 Yen of coverage. The Amazon price is 58, 126 Yen so this seems right). So total shipping cost is 6300 Yen = £34.71.

They also have a guide showing how to add this address to Amazon.co.jp.

I've also registered with Amazon in Japan. This is really easy as the site can be viewed in English like this:

Click on the link for the M3 and EVF:
http://www.amazon.co.jp/Canon-ミラーレス一眼カメラ-ブラック-EVFキット-EOSM3BK-BODYEVFK/dp/B00T90FB8I

On the right of the page, just above the social media links is a "click for English" button.

Registering with a UK address is no problem at all (and will be needed as a credit card address), I then added the Japan address as a shipping address. So far so good.

I've gone all the way through the purchasing process right up until the final click to finalise order page and all is fine.

I'm going to call Tenso on Monday, firstly to check they are easy to deal with on the phone (in English their website says) and then email them screen shots of my address's in Amazon to double check them for me. If this goes smoothly then I'll be ordering this way on Monday. I've read elsewhere that the almost free EVF offer is only for the first 25,000 units sold in Japan.

I did think about the guarantee, but I'm buying from Amazon in Japan, not some company I've never heard of. It will be a pain having to ship back again but worth the risk I think.

The M3 plus EVF would cost £800 in the UK.

From Amazon Japan with international shipping costs and insurance it will cost £355 + plus import duties and taxes of about £100 I reckon.

Quite a saving.

I've never ordered anything this way before. What do you lot think?

EDIT - I did a little more checking on Tenso and found they are widely used by Rakuten. They had a big promo with them just a few months ago:
http://global.rakuten.com/en/event/tenso/
Makes me feel more comfortable tbh.

Sounds as though it could work. There's potential for it to go wrong but you've clearly done some research and are using reputable companies so it could work. Is it out there yet or would you have to pre-order?

I woke up this morning to find my car had been vandalised, so any chance of me getting one are slim now.

Released the same time as here so no quicker and would be a pre-order (to make sure of the EVF).

Sorry to hear about your car. That sucks

I've ordered it from Amazon Japan to be shipped to Tenso then onto me.

I was going to wait a few days but didn't want to miss out on the almost free EVF.

The whole process was really simple as Amazon Japan can be viewed in English and works exactly the same as in the UK. In fact I can cancel my order any time before shipping (if I get cold feet) exactly the same as Amazon UK. I now need to wait until Tenso get my package at the end of March. They then contact me to prove who I am and take payment for my preferred courier service and insurance. From research it seems all Canon cameras have an English menu and Amazon Japan have a 30 day return policy if there is an issue.

Wish me luck Guys :)

(although I think it's all fairly safe. I mean for a start this is Japan, not China or Hong Kong. Then it's Amazon and a parcel forwarding company with a great reputation. Then it's fully insured via a major international courier. Still a bit scary though)

EDIT - Everything is in English, apart from the emails from Amazon Japan. After I placed the orders I had 2 emails from them, both in Japanese. After chucking the text into Google translate, one was the normal receipt and the other was giving me free music downloads lol. Logging into my Japanese account though shows my receipt and delivery info all in English.

Thanks mate, if I ever catch the scroat that did it...

Looks as though you've got the Japan deal all sorted out. Good on you. Hope it all goes smoothly. At least you have the option to cancel if you need to.

Good luck mate. Keep us posted on how you get on [emoji106]

I checked HMRC website and apparently there is no import duty on digital cameras, you only need to pay the vat, whereas you pay duty on lenses, so with those prices an M3 body and EVF at £320 equals £384 !

Plus the admin fee from whoever processes the customs fee (varies depending on courier, Royal Mail charge £8 IIRC, other couriers are more).

Still happy with mine.. GAS will probably get 5d3 owners wondering whether their fabulous piece of kit need replacing With a 50mp monster- and many hard drives for the files!

Watching with interest.

Must say it seems to have gone very quiet here since the M3 announcement ... :)
That's because we're all down the back of our sofas looking for any loose change to put towards our M3 funds!!

No luck with the loose change, just fluff :tumbleweed: just have to keep the EOS M, plus, probably got a car bill coming up, warning lights on the dashboard ain't good are they :) :sulk:

That's not good news, warning lights = ££s. Or alternatively pickup one of those code readers off amazon, clear the warning lights and pray it was electrical issue and doesn't reappear. That = new M3!! Don't worry I'll still be using my original M as well, as going to be good and resist temptation.

New wing mirror + car MOT/Service/tires = no M3 for me :-(

Shame this didn't come to fruition otherwise I'd be saving for a new lens after the car gets sorted:

That is a shame.

Although I noticed the free EVF offer in Japan is limited to the first 25,000 sold. This seems quite a large number doesn't it?

Assuming it means they sell shed loads of these in Asia it stands to reason that more lenses should be on their way.

I hace decided that I am sitting on my hands on pre-ordering the M3.

No new M lenses then I will sell up and go to a different system.
