Canon EOS M Series Cameras

Cool, which drone did/do you have? I'm a drone flyer too. Shame the M doesn't have a shutter release otherwise I'd be tempted to try it out on one of ours.
Ive had two DJI Phantoms, the phantom 2, and the vision plus..
The vision plus is handy as the camera is built in and streams live to the phone/tablet etc, and can flight plan on it etc.
(Back to topic! ;)) Now if there was a gimbal that could take the M camera, would be a perfect camera, size and weight for it. Like you say though, shutter release required.

WEX have publidhed a price for the M3 @ £599 and an M kit trade in at £100 (both incl kit zoom) making a swap price of £499. So less than original M kit price.

Should see a glut of M sets coming through s/h

So £499 swap out for the 24.2Meg senson.

Final spec needed.....

Amazed - a fairly sensible release price

Looking forward to the final spec very soon and release date.

Edit - April
Edit 2 - Hands on quick look at functions - love the screen:

Yes you can have an optional EVF

Yes it has built in WiFi connectivity. Not sure about NFC which the new 760D has.

Yes to built in flash ... GN 5 (90EX will be popular as a GN of 5 on tbe built in flash will be tricky???)

Stainless steel and magneium build

1/4000 sec fastest shutter speed

New battery means not backward compatible

No new lenses mentioned

DIGIC 6

EDIT

24.7 megapuxel hybrid sensor not 24.2 as originally thought

5 fps....

Well it's a yes from me to getting the M3....

But they must bring out some primes that will build on the CSC concept.

Love the folding screen and the 6x quicker AF system.

Focus peaking too.....

More to come but I think Canon need to build the 'family' feel not just lay back on the full size lenses via the adaptor.

Nothing showing re shutter release.... yet!

Thankfully no Dedicated, Canon branded BT/WiFi enabled 'selfie stick' announced.... phew.

I'm hoping tethering is at least available via WiFi but can't find any info on that yet. This is the only box that needs ticking for me spec wise.

Looking forward to seeing a few proper reviews but did see one on AF speed on YouTube which looked good (but in Japanese).

Love that the screen can be folded down as well as up. This will hopefully be okay even in sunlight, so hopefully be okay (for me) without the optional EVF.

Anyway, I've ordered it from Wex :)

Wish they were still offering a smaller cleaner body like the original! It is growing into a mini slr.

Will they announce some new lenses to show a little more commitment to the mount?

Sizewise all I woould say is, given all our 'requirements, needs, desires and expectations', it's a miracle it's not as big as the old Pentax 6x7!

I think Canon will have some new lenses but the clamour for the M3 was always going to be the niggest 'noise'!

We will have to wait till April but I have to say that I am very pleased with the look and specs of the M3. It is growing out of a 'starter' and is evolving jnto something very much more desirable than even the original M.

Re-reading the outline spec it would seem that the M3 has NFC too. Remains to be seen if the requjred 'tethering' apps will appear to push the M3 into some very usefull capabilities....

So the day arrived ad, for me, I am impressed and Spril ca8unnot come soon enough. (Spring and the M3).

Now... what do we want on/in the M4? Just joking.

Well, I'm a tad disappointed and a tad deflated. It's bigger and chunkier (not what I wanted), yet the controls look nicer. The sensor is a surprise (expected the 70D sensor) and a slight disappointment unless it improves DR/noise. The tilting screen I don't really care for, and in fact Canon have contradicted themselves in saying that this is for the 'enthusiasts' market by making the screen rotate 180 degrees for 'selfies'... For the person who is ditching their SLR gear I think it is a no-brainer, with the original M as a backup. But the lack of lens support has left me a bit annoyed. Also the fact that there is no body-only option from the get-go.

That said, I'm sure I'll get one (!) and use my existing M as a pocket version and something as a 'kick-about' camera (may even buy a spare if prices drop), but I'll hold fire on the M3 until the reviews come in on; a) dynamic range/noise and b) AF speed/functionality. Hoping for a sub-£500 body-only option.

What were you saying about the M4 Steve lol?? ;-)

The M4 is for all the things misssd off the M3!!!

I don't think the M3 is that much bigger. The screen is 3". I am not bothered about it's tilt and fold function.

The body only option is a must. This camera is a serious bit of kit and is on an upgrad path so Canon could lose sales if they do not sell a body only option. It's not like popular DSLR kits that retailers often split, will be an economic option if everyone owning an M already has the standard kit + 22mm lancake lens.

Personally I'm in a bit of a quandary.

I'm seriously thinking of selling all my Canon gear and going back to Pentax 100% but the MP-E65mm lens is holding me back .. it's the reason I originally bought a Canon to begin with. The M-3 looks a pretty good camera for macro, what with focus peaking and flippy screen and I could keep my M lenses to go with it.

So then, just caught up on the announcements from earlier this morning..
Interesting.......... Going to definitely take a look at one when they come out in the shops.

At the launch price it puts itself in a very competitive bracket of bodies. It'll be interesting to see if the new sensor and af system justify the price.

I will wait a few months until Argos have it for £199
Looks like Argos are out of black ones, I was hoping they might have dropped the current M down to a silly price with the M3 announcement

It's on there check out this promo:

I really want this camera now. I think overall I'm a bit disappointed they didn't give it a little more punch. The faster AF I'm not too bothered about, it is slightly better but comparable to the M2. The sensor is obviously better too but doesn't seem like it will be a giant leap forward. The delay between shooting single frames is a big issue for me, but again this was largely resolved in the M2. So I'm seriously considering just getting an M2 to overcome these niggles and save myself some cash, however the customisable shutter dial for (probably) aperture, the rear dial for shutter speed and the easier access to ISO control makes me think it will be worth investing in the M3. I've been using the M as my main camera for a while now and I still can't get to grips with changing these settings quickly.

New Canon cashback offers for those that are interested to the end of July

22mm F2 STM - £30 Cashback

11-22mm F4-5.6 IS STM - £35 Cashback

You can see the M3 in action against the M2 in this video:

That looks okay to me.

Tbh I usually photograph landscapes anyway so the speed of the M wasn't an issue. But it's nice to know that this one should be a bit more of an all-rounder should I need something a little faster from time to time.

Now if Canon can just announce a prime before April somewhere between 35-50mm, just to show they are still developing lenses for for the M, I'll be very happy.

I noticed that the woman was using a viewfinder that was attached to the hotshoe?
It that something new for the M3 or have I missed that this is also available for the M?

To be honest I couldn't see anything in it !

Ha ha, me neither. I'd rather trust an independent review rather than a Canon video tbh.

Yes, the existing EVF-DC1 is compatible with the M3. I read somewhere that it will be included in a limited edition kit. No idea if that will be available in the UK though.

Is the M3 available from today or will it be shipping at a later date after pre-ordering?

Really nothing in it is there.
No, certainly nothing worth the price difference between the M2 and the M3 (at launch). I'd like to see some detailed image comparisons to see how the new sensor shapes up, but I think I might be sold on the manual dials anyway (even if they do make it look ugly).
