Canon EOS 70D Owners Thread.

I bite the bullet over CHristmas thanks to a serious price glitch.

I have seriously got the photo bug again!

Loving my new toy!

Welcome to the 70D club to RegG, PMBA and Iceax. I'm sure you'll end up loving it as much as I do. Over the last couple of weeks I've been using my 70D far more than my 5D3. I'm using the 70D and 300 f4L IS for shooting the local wildlife and I'm loving it. I'm sure we'll all be looking forward to seeing some of your shots in the thread and in the other sections soon.

Many thanks Stuart, the only disappointment now is the wait. Despite ordering on Sunday, the camera is not scheduled for delivery until Monday, so I miss out on weekend time to check it over. Ho hum!

Much to my surprise, camera delivered this afternoon, top service from panamoz. itching to use it, though tactfully will wait until after Valentine's evening...!

Hi all, can you please let me know if any of you have had many issues regarding the focusing issues with the 70d? I really want to buy this camera but the reports on other forums have made me wary. Any advice greatly appreciated.

I've had no problems. I think we would have seen some postings here too if others had as well. What problems are being talked about?

Thank you for replying, much of the discussion seems to be around centre focus point wide open, around f2.8-f4 and the fact that, through the viewfinder the pictures are coming out soft, yet in the same circumstances using live view they are perfectly sharp. Seems much of this is coming from the states and Germany.

I almost always use centre point focus, rarely use live view and I'm happy with the results. I did some comparative checks in live view with my 70-200 f2.8 and couldn't see any difference.

It is very hard however to do any reasonable comparison. You'd have to use a tripod, lock the mirror up and use a remote trigger as well as allow for some stabalizing time to compare properly. There are some comparative tests written up around on the Internet though.

I've predominantly used centre point for wildlife shots and used all my prime lenses from my 50 f1.4 to 100 f2.8L macro and zooms from my 70-200 f2.8L IS II and 300 f4L and 24-105 f4L IS and I've not had any problems with focussing or soft images. When I first heard of this I tried to do everything to see if I could make it happen on my 70D but I've not been able to. The only soft shots are when I've missed a focus point, whether centre or outer points, and that's not happened very often (mainly while shooting BIF).

I think it seems to be mainly affecting models in the states and Germany as that seems to be where most of the reports/YouTube vids have come from. I'm hoping to get to John Lewis to try one out with my kit to make sure it handles how I hope it does. Having read through this thread, everyone seems really pleased with theirs. Thanks for putting my mind at ease

Hi all. Should be taking delivery of a 70d with the 18-135 kit lens this week.

Total beginner so just reading through some guide books in preperation.

Apprehensive but looking forward to it all at the same time. I just hope I havent jumped in too deep with a 70d to begin with.

Dave

Don't worry Dave, you can make it as easy or as hard as you want to get started. It does have all the creative filters as well as the more complex AV,TV,M & P but give the manual a good read through with the camera by your side to be able to try the bits you read. I haven't even used the creative filters on mine as I usually shoot in AV or TV, but start with the basics and work up. Take it steady and most important of all, ENJOY it while you're doing it.

Is anyone using the 70D with an EF-S 15-85? I know the 15-85 well but not the 70D and I'm actually someone who is thinking of "downgrading" from 6D/24-105.

Morning all,

Has anyone set up sending pics to a computer via wifi?

At work i use a 550D and an Eyefi card and love the fact as soon as i walk into the office my pictures send over to my computer.

Does the 70D do this in the same way? Ive spent ages youtubing and reading and cant seem to get it to work.

Thanks

Andy

This is from the Canon website "Shoot remotely from alternative viewpoints: connect and control your EOS 70D using your PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone. Images can be reviewed and transferred wirelessly and instantly shared with family and friends." By the looks of that you should be able to transfer the photos straight to your computer from the camera, however I haven't tried to do that. I've got my 70D set up to be controlled remotely by my Galaxy S3 and that works really well. Have a read through the manual, I think I got a smaller manual just for the WIFI part, and it should tell you how to do it there. I haven't got my manuals to hand at the moment so I can't check unfortunately.

One of the reasons I chose the 70D was because of its swivel screen and because I like to shoot wildlife and particularly Dragonflies and other mini-beasts.

I recently shot my first live subject macro/close-ups with my Canon 100mm f2.8L IS Macro lens and these shots would not have been possible without the swivel screen.

Thread here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/pisaura-mirabilis-my-first-ever-live-macro-shots.531484/

I nearly always shoot in Av-mode so far and mostly with a Canon 400mm f5.6L so far. This lens wasn't on my original list but an opportunity came up on TP Classifieds (where I also bought the 100mm Macro) and I love it.

Thanks mod child, I too use my phone for remote and viewing but getting it to talk to my computer seems an impossible task.

Re focussing issues, none here 300f4+1.4 almost permanently on my camera, focus speed is excellent far quicker than my 40D, and sharp it is (y)

The one big thing I am missing which was on 40D was a joystick, it was set to select focus point, I have looked in the manual and cannot find a setting to make joy pad for example always live to select focus point, at the moment I first press the + button and then use the joy pad, realise there are other methods of selecting af point.
Have I missed a setting which cut out one press of a button?

How much better is the 70d at 1600 plus compared to a 50d,?

....Having never used a 50D I can't give you a definitive answer but the 70D is later technology and therefore I would expect it to be generally better at reducing noise as noise reduction is on the agenda of most camera designers and manufacturers.

Thanks for the link, its not working on my tablet browser

....The link is working on my all-singing-dancing Mac desktop machine.

Got to handle the 70d yesterday and really impressed, definitely an upgrade to my 550d! The rapid burst rate and ISO performance are definitely the biggest draws

I only have a 40mm f2.8 STM at the moment and that's what I use if I'm doing any video (not much) and it's excellent for stills and video. However, all my other lenses go on the 70D and I've not had any focussing problems with any of them. I would like to get an 18-135 STM or a 55-250 STM in the future for video and stills but until then I'll stick with the rest.

It looks so much better than my 50d. How are people finding the AF with none stm lenses?

Excellent no complaints here, Canon 50mm,70-200, 300f4+1.4 and tamron 17-50 have been faultless, in fact as said before main set up 300+1.4 is still pretty quick and accurate noticeably better than my trusty 40D

What you are forgetting is you are liable for Customs Tax & Import Duties also which equate to around 20-25% on top so not so good when you look at the end cost.
E-Global was my number 1 online shop but since they have changed there policies it is the last place I now look and always look at Panamoz.

Im yet to go through all the cds that come with the 70D, does lightroom come with it? I see
it did / does with the 5/6D

Thnaks

A

No, LR doesn't come with it. Unless perhaps there's some promotion running perhaps.

I have just found a workaround for using tether shooting in LR 5.3 with the 70D after getting nowhere with Adobe for months.:):woot:

Make sure you have the most current version of the EOS Utility installed for the 70D. This can be found on the Canon website under downloads. It won't work if you have the EOS utility installed for cameras before the 70D. It will contain older .dll files that won't work!!!!!
Close Lightroom
Follow the instructions to the letter, take your time,it worked for me.

Step 1.
Open Windows Explorer and browse to the folder
\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.2\tether_canon.lrplugin

Step 2.
Rename the following files:
EDSDK.dll to EDSDK.dllOLD
EdsImage.dll to EdsImage.dllOLD

Renaming this files allows you to go back if necessary. You may get prompted with a message that you need permission to rename the files. Just agree to rename the files.

Step 3.
Browse to folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Canon\EOS Utility
Select and copy the files EDSDK.dll and EdsImage.dll
Paste the files to the folder:
\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.2\tether_canon.lrplugin

You may be prompted for permission to copy the files to folder. Agree and continue.

Start LR and happy tethering!!!

Cheers!
