....Might that have compromised other features in what is the 70D's smaller body than the other models with dual card bays?

....Canon's 100mm 2.8 L Macro lens is exactly what I intend to couple with my 70D when I buy one, so it's great to read your findings :thumbs:

Re the absence of 'Spot Focus' isn't that simply a matter of pre setting only the central focus sensor dot? If it's something you want to use 90% of the time then it's done. Is introducing 'Spot Focus' actually something which a firmware update could address?

I haven't used a 70D yet but I understand that it doesn't have a direct ISO selection button which obviously could be useful.

I was shooting outdoor portraits with my daughter's Canon 100D this weekend and I found the LCD touch screen fairly fast for accessing settings.

There's a dedicated button on the top to change ISO.

....Great! Thanks for that info, Duncan. I have read and watched so many reviews on the Canons 700D, 70D, 7D, that I must have got mixed up.

So, hold the button and scroll a wheel, I assume. Perfect way to quickly dial in some help to achieve extra DoF on close-ups.

Apparently the LCD's Live View shows the DoF appearance of your shot-to-be.

The DoF button on the 100D is very poor as it's small and awkward to reach.

Seeing your lego page just gave me a thought. Does anyone know if you can do stop motion video on the 70D?
 
70D with 18-55 STM lens for £899 at HDEW cameras. Any better deals? Was going to go for 700D but this seems like a good deal for £300 more. Also do the body for £799, makes sense to get the kit lens?
 
Lens depends on what you're after. Both the 18-55 and the 18-135mm are STM which means virtually silent when autofocussing in video mode. Someone's posted videos in the thread about the noise that comes from USM lenses.

FWIW I went for the 18-135mm lens.







Out of curiosity, what's everyone using for a strap/grip? I quite liked using my G12 with a wrist strap and feel I'd benefit from one on the 70D.
 
I got an ebay hand strap for around £4 that screws into the tripod mount and connects to the right side strap lug to tighten it for comfort. I find it very useful when shooting macro as I can safely hold it at arms length and still get the shot.

If anyone is looking at getting the 18-135 IS STM lens MPB have a good deal on one at the moment http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/us...-lenses/canon-ef-s-18-135mm-f/3.5-5.6-is-stm/ and is actually £50 cheaper than the older IS version. Don't all rush at once folks.
 
Been reading the manual and discovered the 70D will wirelessly (optically) trigger my 430EXII.
 
Talking of the 70D's WiFi capabilities, I should be able to set it up on a tripod in my garden and control shooting wildlife remotely via my iPad while indoors.
 
Yup - I played with it for a few moments. You can't change much in terms of settings - you can change ISO and exposure compensation (though I only played in P mode). It activates the live view mode but just as you can track-focus by pressing on the touch screen, you can do the same on the iPhone/iPad.

....Deciding and pre-setting ISO and EV doesn't compromise the shot. The important one of focus control is easy on the remotely connected Live View-to-iPad screen, as is the shutter. So it seems practical. P-mode would be a good one.

It's a bit point & shoot but could still achieve some good shots according to subject. I have a Greater Spotted Woodpecker visit firly regularly but he is very shy - Just as an example.
 
I've just double checked and you can set aperture and shutter speed in manual mode using the app. You must enable live view to see it on the camera whilst you shoot. If you don't, you have a blank screen until the shot has been taken.
 
I downloaded the EOS app to my smart phone and I've got it all set up ready to take the wireless shots, I've done a few around the house to test it and it's very good, and I'll be giving it a try out soon outdoors. It wont be a massively used feature for me but it'll definitely come in handy for macro and nesting birds. I'm going to download the app to my laptop when I get round to it and then I'll be able to upload the shots straight to that so people can choose which photo they want printing straight away.
 
It looks as if Canon have given serious consideration to the wireless feature and it's very convenient that an extra component doesn't have to be bought and physically connected to then achieve WiFi.

The 70D may 'only' be a mid-range as opposed to a pro range camera body but it clearly introduces some new and exciting technology which will surely be applied to the more expensive Canon bodies in due course.
 
Watching another review of the 70D and they're still berating the "soft buttons" of the 70D. I'm inclined to believe that canon did this for the video mode - I suspect you wouldn't be able to hear the soft buttons being pushed if you needed to use them whilst shooting video.

Will test this out soon enough.
 
'Soft', or rather silent, buttons for video makes sense.

However they feel or sound the camera user will always adapt to it quickly and it won't be a problem.
 
Had a play with the wifi connection to my PC, how awful :gag: took an age to connect and then even slower to copy across. I think I will stick to a card reader for transferring images :wave:

Thankfully iPad connection works quite well, which I am looking forward to using on holiday - no need to lug the laptop.
 
I hope I'm right in thinking that the 70D can be connected to a desktop Mac/PC by a good old fashioned USB cable.
 
Yeah, it does. I've just tried it to be sure but I've had no problems accessing the card as a mass storage device and it goes straight to EOS Utility when plugged in.

I got it to connect wirelessly fairly easily to the computer but I also found it a bit slow for transferring the photos. It would be ok to do a few if you wanted to show someone but for a few hundred photos I'd stick to a card reader. The wireless is great for taking remote shots though, I've got it connected to my laptop, desktop and mobile but I've only used it for a few test shots around the house so far.
 
I don't normally recommend books etc. but I have just bought the ebook 'Canon 70D Experience' from http://www.dojoklo.com/Full_Stop/Canon_70D_Experience.htm and find it very good indeed. Getting the 70D was/is a big step forward for me from my old 400D and this book explains a lot of the features in detail with examples on when to use what and why. If anyone else is in a similar situation to me then they may also find this book useful.

If you've owned it for 2 months, that's 166 a day! I presume you are using it for pro use for sports or birds or something?

I don't think I've taken that many in 5 years of owning my camera!

Thanks for the heads up, I will take a look.

Does it cover the the "High ISO speed NR" setting ? I was reading a review on www.ronmartblog.com and he recommends the "low setting" in his "A Word About Canon In-Camera Noise Reduction" paragraph with the Tolkien book sample images !

I have not played with any of these settings yet, any comments ?

It does mention high iso nr in many places but it just says leave in standard and experiment to see how you find it for your circumstances. I guess if your shooting high iso jpg only then it could be important but at high iso I would rather shoot raw as well and use nr in pp.
 
Good morning all,
Prospective new 70d owner here with a question that I don't seem to be able to answer. Does the wi-fi functionality work in movie mode or is it just for stills? I quite like the idea of setting the camera up on a tripod and controlling movie capture from the other side of the room.Thanks

WiFi must be off for video.
 
many thanks for confirming this, Duncan. Having done a little more research it looks as though one option would be to use a remote control (RC-6) to "stop-start" movie recording
 
You have to point the remote at the IR sensor (it's at the front of the camera IIRC) so you might find that a RS-60 E3 remote switch will be better.
 
probably going to buy one of these thi smonth after much debate between a 70D or OMD-EM1.

Based on the fact I can get the 70D and some money left for lenses I think I will be going for a 70D.

Will be getting the kit 18-55 lens but after some suggestions for additional lenses.

1. I will want something with a good reach for a safari next year, will probably buy 2nd hand and sell afterwards. £300 max - suggestions?

2. Better Walkabout lens? Should I keep the kit 18-55 or is there anything better for day to day use, travel etc for £300 max?
 
I would recommend you consider the 18-135 instead of the 18-55. The extra reach makes it a great walkabout lens.
 
Good call, will look into that. covers a better range for most things. Is it much heavier?
 
The 18-135 STM is a cracking lens, I had a go with one at a shop on my 70D at the weekend and it's superb for Liveview shots. It's fast to focus, compared to the 18-135 IS (non STM) version that I part ex'd for a Tamron 18-270 VC PZD, and it's sharper too. Bear in mind this was a demo lens so it's been heavily used but it was still smoother to zoom than the old one too. Had I not got the FL covered by other lenses I'd seriously look into one and if you can get one as a 'kit' lens with a 70D at a decent price you'd be nuts not to go for it. The updated 55-250 STM looks like it could be a storming update to an already very good lens.
 
I currently use a 550D and a 60D and am thinking of a 70D for the faster drive speed and especially that extra stop of iso as I do a lot of non league football photography and the floodlights are not brilliant.Anybody used theirs at 12800 or even the extended 25600 and if so what is the high iso performance like
 
If it's only one iso stop you're after then getting an f2.8 lens might be better than a new body.
