I am fairly new to this, I have just awaiting my first dslr to be delivered and was wondering, can anyone recommend a sturdy tripod?

anything from 40+ pounds will do I think, just shop around and compare them.

If you asking about tripod - there is only one answer (in my opinion) - Manfrotto
you can get 055XPROB legs and one of the ball heads and your camera will be stable as welded to the ground :D

If you told us your budget range that would help as well, also - what type of photography will you be doing.
 
Budget range between £50-100 pounders, beginner looing to enjoy the art of photography, eventually I would take portait pics
 
ebay then . I doubt that 100quid would buy you a manfrotto or similar. but you can get a great tripod for that money.
