Hi I am new to this forum, this is my first post,

I currently use the Canon 1000D and have been looking around and noticed that you can pick up a Canon EOS 5D mkI for around £500 so I was just wondering if any of you have used that particular model and can share any experiences with it?

I'm not sure on what camera to get as there is also an old EOS 1D mkII for similar prices and that seems even more high end, basically I want to go full frame and would love to be able to afford the 5D mkII but it's still outside of what I can afford.

My main worry is the fact the EOS 5D might be worse quality with it being a Digic II and not III processor, does this even matter? I was thinking that the 5D would be a big step up in image quality and detail to my 1000D...

any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

regards,

Ben Tyreman.

Hello.

AFAIK the 1D isn't full frame, it's a x1.3 crop. The 1Ds is however full frame.

I was using a Canon APS-C (20D) until a few months ago when I bought a used 5D and I think that there is an improvement in image quality for me but it's hard to say exactly how much of an improvement there is in a final image especially if you shoot RAW and try to get the most out of your shots. I didn't find a night and day difference, I suppose it's true to say that any differences may be more apparent as the ISO rises.

I'm pretty sure that you should be able to find some 5D files on line that you can download and play with.

I do shoot in RAW always, also I made a mistake I meant the 1Ds mkII. What is noise like at ISO 3200?

Why do you want to "go full frame"?

If you do want full frame, then the 1D is no use to you, as it's not full frame.

5D is a great camera, I use one for work every day. I still prefer it over my 1D mk IV for some things. For 500 quid you can't go wrong.

+1 from me too. Yes, yes, yes.

(Except that I don't use a camera for work, or have a 1DMkiv.)

The 5d is an excellent camera, the only real downside is the screen and lack of auto ISO.

Check you lens collection though as it only works with ef not efs mounts

DsII is amazing unless you compare it to 1DX or D4. ISO3200 is not spotless, but usable (and about same as newer 1DIII), something I couldn't say about 40D for example.

I went from a 5D to a 1Ds Mkii and never looked back.

Are you sure its a 1Ds Mkii you have spotted though, they're more like the £900 mark rather than the £500 of the 5D

I have a 5D (1) and a 1D (2), the 5D is better by about 1 stop in the noise dept. The 5D images are smoother etc. Both cameras would be about the same price now (not the 1Ds though, as already mentioned. Yes there is a noticeable difference in quality (assuming your lenses will cope) over most other bodies as far as the 5D is concerned.
The 1D is tougher and hardier, IQ is quite similar (it should be at 1.3 instead of 1.6 or FF) but they are quite different cameras, but both are still capable of great image taking in normal conditions, in dim light etc newer bodies are a lot better, but a lot more money.
If you have £500 to spend you could do a lot worse.

It's ok. Especially after NR. One thing I've found is that 5D files can contain noise but they react well to post capture processing.

If you can't find any example files on line let me know and I'll email you a couple.

I went from a 400d to a 1Ds Mk1, it weighs a lot more, feels indestructable, and sneers at cheaper lenses. I'd read that it was picky about the glass used, but it's true, the stuff I found ok on the 400d just doesn't cut it on the 1Ds, although my 50mm Mk1 seems ok. I found full frame makes life easier at the motorcycle show, you can get in closer and still get all the bike in the frame, without arms and legs intruding into the shot. The viewfinder is a huge improvement, much brighter and easier to see what's going on.

I've got a 5D and previously had a 1D, the 5D is great for landscapes and portraits, but the AF on the 1D is much better, so if you're shooting sport the 1D is a better bet (it's also heavier).

I bought the 5D mk1 today! wow what a huge difference, it only had 498 shutter counts! I could not believe my luck, plus 4x batteries manual etc, only thing missing was the box, paid just over £550... seems good so far, it's nice to have 50mm being 50mm
