Evening all,

I'm currently in the situation where i'm able to afford a second body, i currently have a 40D, i would consider having a second 40D but the idea of the extra pixels etc on the 50D appeals to me, so....

Anyone with this camera,

1. what's your views on it ?
2. Any problems with it ?
3. Any bad experiences with it ?

Any help would be greatfully appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Ryan.

I've got one, having recently swapped form a 450D. I have no real experience of top-end equipment, but the 50D does all that I could want and more. I guess you know what it can do that the 40D can't; A slightly wider ISO range (albeit not a very usable 12800), 6.3fps, and UDMA support. Is there anytihing else?

I've just swapped from a 40D to 50D.

The higher pixel count means you can crop harder when needed, iniatial tests in the dark and high ISO come out favourably up to 3200. 6400 starts to need some serious work in noise ninja and 12k is really for when you have to get a shot.

There's what I thought was a gimmick but turns out to be really handy. When you press the joystick in, you get a menu on the back with all the most useful items on screen, white balance, iso, AF point, AF type etc. you can scroll around the various settings with the joystick and change with the wheel.

Actually turns out to be really useful for checking setings on a sanity check. Very quick and easy.

There's a few ectras on live view, slow face detection, showing you exposure compensation etc, but I've not used then yet.

So far other than that it has all the features and feel of the 40D.

Hopefully you won't be offended by this but I've just had a look at your kit bag and I'd guess that only the 70-200/4 will actually give you any noticeable benefit from the extra pixels. The pixel density on the 50D would require a lens with very high MTF to supply sufficient resolution...and that would be stopped down slightly and centering the subject.
Is it worth the extra £350-400....only you know that one.

Bob

Thanks for all the feedback :)
much appreciated :)

Thanks Bob, i understand where your coming from, being a motorsport photographer my intention would be to have the 70-200 constantly fixed to the 50D and the 10-22 fixed on the 40D, so therefore i wouldnt be required to change the lenses and risk getting dust on the sensor.

Thanks for all the feedback,

Cheers,

I know you do motorsport Ryan and the crop factor and fater AF is beneficial but I don't think that the 50D is much of a step up, even as a second body. I went from the 400 to the 50 a few months ago and the quality is amazing but after doing less and less rallying I am kinda wishing I went for the 5D (MkI).

I would suggest getting the 5D for the 70-200 even with the "slow" af and keep the 40D for the 10-22???

My thoughts anyway. I really like the 50D but still wish I had gone 5D. In an ideal world I would like the best of both, which you have the opportunity to have.

If you are out on the Bulldog and want to have a play with my 50D, take some images and see what you think of the results let me know and I am sure we can arrange to meet?

Personally, I'm looking to drop my 5D and go for a 40D/50D instead. I upgraded from a 400D to 5D (mk1) and whilst its absolutely brilliant at landscapes, portraits I desperately miss the crop factor, even when using a 300mm lens. For instance, up at Snetterton this weekend, 75% of shots needed a decent amount of cropping to get the same shot I'd have had straight out a crop-body, where they've actually ended up at a lower resolution than the 40D would be able to offer anyway.

I have a 50D and shoot with it all the time. I'm certainly pleased with it and have had no problems at all (touching wood). The advantage of the large pixel count makes it a great camera to maximise the reach of long lenses, and enabling you to crop tightly while still maintaining good image quality. It's pretty well ideal for me given the current state of play.

If the camera has a downside, it's as Canon Bob said - that massive pixel count on a crop sensor means you need top quality lenses to get the best out of it - budget lenses will probably leave you feeling very disappointed.

..... I upgraded from a 400D to 5D (mk1)....

Strange to consider it as an "upgrade" as they're different formats with different benefits. I would only consider 400D to 5D as an upgrade if you were confined to portraits or landscapes.

Well, I considered it as an upgrade at the time, considering the types of photography I seemed to be doing (stock, landscapes, work portraits) but I really prefer motorsport where it is clearly lacking slightly......

I personally have no point of reference for the 5d apart from holdig and playing with one in Jessops. It is the age old 'grass is always greener' syndrome.

To be honest Ryan if you like the 40D you'll get on well with the 50, otherwise save yourself £400 and invest in some new glass as well as another 40?

DB

I absolutely depends what you want the camera for as to what sensor size you need, and it merits careful consideration unless you're in the fortunate position of being able to have bodies with both formats.

If you go for the 50, then in a few years down the line you can swap your 40 in for a 60d or a 1d to keep yourself on the up, having two 40s keeps you at the same level.

On the other hand 40d's will share batteries, which will be useful for extended shooting.

I have very recently (2 days ago) upgraded to a 50d from a 450d and I find everything about it amazing, I have too much budget glass and that is a problem with it, but my favorite lens is L and I intend to upgrade my other most frequently used glass when I can to match my new body.

as said the 50D loves good glass and i am trying to get my lenses to a good level now to take full advantage of the 50D.
I would like a spare digital body to go along side it and not sure what to go for. 40D, another 50D 5D or 1D II

Hi Chaps...

This seems to be one of those cameras that are being widely talked about and enthusing people to get buying...

I am also in the market for a camera...keeping me Panasonic fz30 hybrid...selling the big scope and most of my big astro stuff...the 50D is well up on my wish list...but...GLASS...WHICH ONES...???

What rules the roost...is the pecking order...Glass (L etc)...F (2.8 only, 4 only, variable)...IS (I do like my Pannys)...USM...???

HELP...I am lucky enough to be in a position where have no glass...so want a couple of good ones...(18-55 or 24-75...maybe or what) and a (55/75-200 or 300)...nifty 50...? I shoot a lot of different stuff as I am just learning...

All comments/help/advice appreciated...!!!

THANKS

To get the best out of the 50D and going for "a couple of good ones" then it'll be zooms to get you started. I'd opt for a 24-70/2.8 and a 70-200/2.8 (IS or non-IS...depends on budget and usage)

Bob

I upgraded from the 400D to the 50D and absolutely love it, for me it was well worth the money. I didn't expect to see much, if any, improvement in image quality, I was aware of that before I went for it, for me, it's the general ergonomics, faster AF and FPS.

Although the argument, sorry, discussion, about needing good lenses is a moot one, I have a Siggy 70-300, which I always thought was excellent for it's money. Whilst the 50D will no doubt benefit from the use of superior glass, it doesn't make mediocre lenses any worse than they were than on, say, my old 400D.

That's exactly right Pete....it was stated that you need good glass to get the benefit of the higher pixel density. A Mondeo and a Ferrari will have pretty similar performance driving along a street full of speed humps.

when i got my 50D moving from a 400D the image quality was clearly in a different league, the sharpness alone was brilliant.

Been looking at the 50D myself but at the moment don't see it as a significant upgrade as not a great deal has change unlike the jump from my 400D too 40D.

Looks nice and played with it in jessops but alot of cash for very little benefit.

^^

I missed this when I first read the manual, it is very useful, I find it much easier using this feature to change those settings.

Mine produces naff images with my Sigma lenses. I wish I'd never bought it.
