im selling the sony so want to know if this one is any good? also its £550 with a tamron telephoto 75mm-300mm lens, is that a good deal?

A good entry camera from Canon, although if you're struggling with the Sony, you'll have similar problems with the Canon until you understand the basics of ISO, Aperture and shutterspeed and how to balance the 'exposure triangle'

why are you selling the Sony?

And I can vouch that the 450D is a great purchase.

my oh wants it, so i thought i'd just get an upgrade and learn on that, is it an upgrade? are canon better than sony's?
what better the canon EOS 450D or a Nikon D3000 or Sony Alpha a330

Emma, the best bet is to go and try them and get a feel for which one suits you best. Although... if you're gonna end up with 2 cameras, you and your OH, it might be worth sticking with the Sony as you will need to invest less for lenses (although that might cause arguments ;))

i've owned a 450d for two years now,it replaced a 300d,and i can vouch for it being a great camera, and have taken loads of pics with it,as said it's a good starter camera

They certainly have access to a wider bank of quality lenses, which is probably the most important thing. At the bottom end of the market, the most important thing with a camera is that its one you like and feel comfortable with working with. I've got a 450D myself, and frankly wish that I'd bought something a little larger, as the 450D feels lost in my paws. That being said, it's size is pretty much the only thing I'm unhappy with - it's done everything I've asked of it, paid for itself on a couple of jobs, and i'm unlikely to be selling it, even though I can hear the 7D calling to me

If you can manage it, at @£650 you should be able to get the Canon twin lens kit, this has the 55-250 IS zoom, which is an excellent lens for the money and is image stabilised where the Tamron isn't. This will help hand holding the lens. Th Canon lens has had lots of favourable comments on TP.

what is best out of the 3? i was told today that, sony's are crap in comparision to cannons this was by staff in jessops. so would like your opinions on what one is best, and if it is better than what i have already.

The 55-250IS is an excellent lens, agreed, and has a pretty good "reach" on the 450D... Okay, you're not going to be shooting blue tits at 200 yards with it, but it'll certainly pull the ducks off the water ;)

The truth of the matter is that at the bottom end of the price scale, there's very little to choose between the makes - If you are going to buy a camera and a single lens and that's all, then get whichever one you like, which fits your hands, and which you can understand the menus. Because if you feel comfortable with it you'll use it more, and if you use it more, your shot's will improve. Everyone's likes and dislikes are different. I happen to like Canon cameras. A friend of mine can't stand them and will only use Nikon. It doesn't mean that the Nikon is better than the Canon or vice versa, it just means that they suit different people.

im just looking on jessops, my budget is £550. id like a tele photo lens, pref with a macro of 2:1 also. any ideas on what would be best?
i dont understand any of the menus on any of them so i will buy one and learn on that, get used to that one, which is why i just want to find what is best for the money, then i will get it and learn. if i learn how to use them then i wont have a problem.

Well said, I'm sure lots of people would put forward the merits of the Nikon D5000. Maybe you need to think about where the Sony is "lacking" or rather not meeting your needs, and then look at alternatives/upgrades.

the sony is'nt lacking with anything, the menu style confuses me.
my oh wants it so im getting a new one, if he didnt want it, i wouldnt be getting a new one. so i just wanna know what one is best. not for me personally but in general with spec, as i will have to learn how to use it.

Ok Emma, to say a given camera is the best is too subjective "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", all the cameras available have relative merits. The Canon 450D/500D/550D and the Nikon D3000/D5000 all have something going for them.

The 450 is a smashing wee camera. I don't know whether it is 'better' than what you currently have though.

Having had a quick look on jessops website, the deal that they're doing on the 450D, standard kit lens and 75-300 does seem a pretty good deal - though you should be aware that it's really just getting rid of old stock - the 450D is 2 models down on the current releases. Doesn't make it a bad camera though - as I say, I'm not planning on selling mine anytime soon!

I wouldn't have a 75-300 if someone threw it at me... lol. The Jessops kits look a bit lame to me and they cost a lot.

TBH jessops are crap in comparison to jacobs. sony, canon, and nikon are all brilliant camera brands and all have their up and downs. stick with the sony as it really doesnt matter what the camera is as long as your a decent tog.

Fair enough - never used one, so couldn't comment on how good they were, just that it was a deal of sorts - we know that Jessops aren't always the cheapest supplier - however the OP had expressed her desire to spend her 550 beer tokens there....

If you want to save some money, AndyWest has one for sale on the classifieds part of the forum for £270 for the 450D body, then buy what lenses you want afterwards,

Cheers

Rob

I am surprised nobody has said this yet.....

Go into your local camera store and go have a look.....

Try the camera's play with them, see how the menu's work...

See how it feels in your hand

Then decide..

P.S I have a 450D and I love it..

At this stage you haven't really bought into a system so aren't locked into a make by having a load of lenses etc. You can therefore choose the system that suits you - as others have said all the entry models are perfectly good enough. The Big Two (Canon and Nikon) probably have a wider range of lenses and accessories but that's not really a concern for you just now.

Go to a shop and try them. I happen to like the Canon system but it's a personal choice thing. I find the xxxD models a bit small and much prefer the xxD size body. You may find differently.

Don't forget, there's plenty of people upgrading all the time so there's plenty of choice of second hand bodies in really good nick. Spending less on a body and more on the lenses is a better long term strategy. Check out the For Sale sections here and also second hand dealers like MPB Photographic. I've used the latter and found the service and the gear I've bought to be excellent. My camera body and about half my lenses are second hand.

I have two Canon 450D's and I love them. They are a good entry-level DSLR, and with a bit of practice the controls are easy to use and manipulate. I cannot comment on any other kit as I haven't tried it.

That's nonsense. In reality, there is no such thing as a crap DSLR. They are all extremely good, and a million miles ahead of any compact you may have had previously. Jessops sales assistants, are just selling whatever has best commission.

I bought my Sony because it had a fold out screen, and a great live view system. Not because it would take better shots than a Canon or Nikon, it won't. In most cases, no-one could tell which photo was taken on a Nikon, Canon, Sony etc, in a blind test.

The most relevent help I have seen is the fact that you and bf can share lenses, which could spread the cost a bit.

Emma, I think it is just going to boil down to go to shop, and select the camera you like the feel of. All the cameras have something to offer. Don't forget to factor in your current camera, do you need to buy new, if as you say you're going to have a learning curve with any camera you choose?

There is no quick and easy answer, choosing a camera is too personal, there are too many variables (budget, feel, user priorities etc.)

There are also several Camera review sites on the internet, they might help, e.g.:

http://www.cameralabs.com/
http://www.trustedreviews.com/
http://www.photographyblog.com/

I'm sure there are others.
