I have been using the EOS 40d in sports mode with a 75 - 300 lens but the quality of the photo is often blurred. Any advice?

Bit too vague i'm afraid Steve, post one or two of the pics up with exif would be handy

Are pics with that lens usually ok?

Copy of photo from local rugby game using EOS 40D with 75 - 300mm lens on sports mode . Bit blurred but lens ok with stills.

Should I be trying other settings on camera

Take it out of sports mode, if youre not happy going fully manual then try Aperture Priority, look for a good high shutter speed of at least 1/640th sec and adjust ISO to acheive this, try with Evaluative metering or Canons equivilant., you may find this time of year with the days getting shorter youll struggle with a slow lens like yours.

Dont be embarassed to ask what you think may be simple questions Steve, we all started somewhere, i remember asking the exact question as you when i bought my first DSLR, a 10d and Sigma 70-300mm, i havent done bad since.

I would hazard a guess that he can't get a fast enough shutter speed because he doesn't have a fast (2.8) lens ??

Agree with the above I use AV wide open and the up the ISO to ensure it freezes the actions.

Depends on the light - with all this late Autumn sunshine should be plenty of light at f4

The 40D may be the same as the 20D I had.

As best I remember Sports mode sticks the ISO on 400, the focussing on Al-Servo and shutter on Hi-Speed Continuous.

So I suspect it is using the largest aperture it can and is really Aperture Priority (with the other setting fixed).

So I would agree with Gary.

Also pray for bright days as we go in to Winter. I would also say if you are not getting a decent shutter speed (as Gary says 1/640th) tr to position yourself with players running towards you. As there is less sideways movement you stand a better a chance of a decent image (I got that advice on here a while ago - Kipax maybe).

Me again

Bummer - I was debating in my mind whether it was you are Tony but I stuck with a Canon guy in the end :D

Mahoosive apologies...

Just checked the 40D manual on-line (page 60).

Sports mode sets the ISO between 400 and 800. You may be able to go to 1600 and still get good images.
