How can I tell how many actuations a Canon EOS 400d has? Alex :)

There is no proper way of finding out, however I found this:

If you have never reset the counter... and set to be sequential/continuous (vs reset with new card).

Frames are 0-999 and folders are thousands after that

101 would be 1000-1999, and
111 Would be 10,000 to 10,999, etc

Not sure if that is right or not though.

ID number from your image filename? (unless it's been reset).

I think the only fullproof way is if canon check this for you, if you were to send it in for any reason.

There are three conditions which have to be satisfied in order to determine the actuation count.
  1. The camera has always been set to continuous file numbering.
  2. The frame counter has never been manually reset.
  3. All CF cards used by the camera have been either (a) dedicated to this camera or (b) reformatted before use in this camera.
If these conditions are met, then the file number will tell you the number of actuations as ScarySquirrel says. But otherwise there's no way of telling, short of a trip to Canon. If this is a camera you're thinking of buying, then of course there's no way of knowing for sure whether these conditions are met.
