canon eos 400d/rebel xti the same?

Hi,

i'm new on here and am looking to get my forst digital SLR.
generally the Canon 400d seems to be highly rated wherever I look, so was thinking of one of those with the 18-55mm lens just to get me started.

looking around, I can see huge variation in prices, most notably on the dreaded ebay, although most of the models on there seem to be known as a Rebel Xti and 400d simultaneously.

are these two models actually the same?:help:
I was thinking maybe one is an import or similar, is this the case?

The Xti is the American name for the 400D. I'm not sure there is really any difference (as far as I know) but I personally would prefer to have the UK version.

Also the kit lens is fine if that's your budget. But have a good look at getting the body only and choose a lens to suit your needs. I had the kit lens and was disappointed with the quality. I recently upgraded to the Sigma 17-70mm which many people on here give the thumbs up and I like it much more. You can get it for around 220-250.
 
The 2 models are the same but the 400D is for the european maket and the XTI for the American market, personally I would only buy one that came with a Canon UK warranty.
The kit lens will do fine to get you started.

Pretty much agree with the above BUT the kit lens does produce acceptable results and if you are on a tight budget don't be in too much hurry to ditch it

If that's the difference, then I'd agree with comments re the uk version as opposed to the US. I've had issues with electronics before that were bought in the US with no worldwide warranty.

as far as the kit lens goes, i've seen quite a few conflicting opinions re it being useless/actually not bad/perfectly satisfactory... personally it's not such a matter of budget more that i don't want to lay out loads of cash until i know that i actually enjoy photography as much as i think i will, and have got the hang of some of the basics.

Very wise! you can end up spending several hundred and in fact thousand (s) on lens (es)
I wasn't trying to be rude just suggesting that you might like to give it ( the kit lens) a go before rushing out and spending a lot of hard earned but you seem to have thought that through anyway :D

Aye, they are just two different names for the Canon Kiss X.

So get a good compact. Much cheaper. Perfect to learn the basics. And to learn what you actually want in/from an SLR. And when you get that, the compact will be an excellent spare camera (no self-respecting wedding photog does a gig with only one camera in his/her bag!).
