My other half just told me that he plans to buy me a camera for Xmas. I have been reading on the WHICH website to find out what the best buys are. The Canon 350 EOS has a better review than than the 400. 350 and 400 users which would you recommend? This will be my first DSLR. :)

I had a 350D which I was very happy with for about 18 months, there are advantages with the 400D such as higher resolution, bigger screen, and sensor cleaning. I don;t think you can go wrong on either.

DD

I recently read a review in which the 350 got 16/25. Bearing in mind this was a camera that was getting 9/10, 24/25 etc when it came out. I think the general feeling when the 400 came out it was as good as the 350 with some improvements but not enough. That's the impression I get any way. They are both great cameras.

Why not push him for the 40D;) If he really loves you ------------ (emotional blackmail, women are very good at that:lol::lol:)

If you've got the cash go for the 400, +1 to what rwotton said about the advantages, for me the biggest is the sensor cleaning, never had a problem with dust and that is a big plus.

Thanks for the advice guys. As a woman Brash I have of course no idea what you mean
Will do a bit more thinking and I'll let you know what Santa finally brings :)

Duckydoodle both these cameras are more than capable of taking excellent pictures. The 400 was the replacement for the 350 and is technically better but in practice I doubt you'd see any difference in the results. I would have thought it really all comes down to price and as a new 400 is available now at much the same price as a new 350 I'd certainly go for the 400D. If you haven't already read it, this review may give you some idea as to what your buying: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/

Thanks Steve. I read some reviews and tech spec yesterday too and think I've decided on the 400. Can't wait til Santa brings it now and who knows he may bring it early if I'm good :)

You love the 400D it pretty easy to use from the get go.

Thanks I hope so. Fairly new to photography but loving it and think it's time to upgrade from my Olympus point and shoot and will be looking for more advice when my 400 arrives :)

Get a d70s with a couple of lenses and a flash gun off eBay rather than buying a new 400D.

Just my humble onion.

This is a brilliant website for people that are just starting out in the World of DSLR from Canon

It give you all the info you need and is easy to understand to what most of the fuctions do on your new camera.

Thank you that's very thoughtful. I've had a quick look at the link and it's just the sort of thing a newbod like moi needs :)

I had a look on ebay Danny and was tempted to do that but thought I'd rather buy something I can see and touch and know is in good nick and carries a warranty.

I went for the 350d with the kit lens and am very happy with it, my first dslr. It's very easy to use and I was into manual mode within a week. It might be worthwile going for the 350 body and spending the difference you saved on a better lens than 18-55 ef-s.

I would go with the 400 too, just because of the bigger screen etc...

If you look at warehouse express, kits are as follows with the difference in price going in favor of the 400d:

Canon EOS-350D 18-55 kit £369

Canon EOS-400D 18-55 Kit £412 - £50 cashback £362

So definately worth getting the 400d if you buy from here. HTH DuckyD

Thanks for the advice guys you've been really helpful and I am going to get the 400 :)

Hi, i got my 400d body from AJPurdy. It was £364 then with the £50 cashback and the offer of another 5% discount i paid £295. Give them a look www.ajpurdy.co.uk

Got both the 350 and the 400 (arent I lucky) started out with the 350, and was happy with this, then tescos were doing an offer on the 400 so he bought me that as in the mean time he had bought himself the 30 (thats another story) and I must admit I take the 400 out now to use, larger screen is much better which is nicer, and the sensor cleaning is a bonus.

I saw the 400 kit for £387 yesterday £330 with the cashback. Can't remember the sight will have another look later :)

I went with the 400D mainly for the sensor cleaning and the larger screen, as I find the 1.8" one on the 350D just a bit too small for reviewing shots. I know a lot of 350D owners don't like the loss of the separate LCD for exposure info but tbh the single larger screen works really well.

Speak to Kerso as I'm sure he will beat most prices that people and yourself can find.

Wow the 400's have dropped quick :) The offers at warehouse express are pretty good, camera, lens, lowepro bag, 1gb card, uv filter for 399
