hi guys, n girls,
First post, for me.
Just been offered 1D3,and have been contemplating getting 2nd body. Not sure on the amount of actuations, but did notice lcd screen at bottom of body, 1000000 , what does this mean? There are no cds or instructions at the mo. Guy is trying to find the box! :)
Main question is.. Will it be a good partner to 7D? Was going to pair the mk3 with 70-200/2.8 is2.

Thanks Steve

Slightly different crop factor and a lot less pixels but I love mine. Theres something about the raw images that has a great quality.

Mine sits alongside a 5d2 which I use for totaly different purposes.

Fast AF weather sealed, a big feel and more is the way I look at it.

The number at the bottom is folder number / file number

Mine shows 102 for the folder and 0194 for the file number

which I thing equates to 10,194 shots which is about right. But that is not the true number of actuations.

I would suggest someone changed the numbering in the camera to reset to zero with each change of card.

As for the 70-200 I use my none IS on my 1d3 and its a great partnership.

Thanks for your input Chris.
I was considering 1Ds2, any better?
Is the 1D3 good in low light situations? Was at an airshow last year and they put on night time show, found 7D ok but a tad noisy, was at 1600!! :)

Cheers

I think I've still got some iso6400 shots from a 1dmk3 in the sports crit section, it's okay but a bit noisey as you'd expect and needs a pass through noise reduction software

Used mine over the last 4.5 years since it was new. :)

It's my all round go to body for just about everything and partnered a 5D mki.
Gigs (low - light up to 3200 iso), family events, studio, plenty of location shoots and even the odd holiday. In the end I only used the 5D when I wanted my wide angles to be properly wide. :) In fact, there's a good chance that any of my recent images were shot on the MKIII.

I think they are now going for between £1000 and £1400 depending on condition, and if you don't need the resolution of newer cameras they're very nice indeed and like ChrisH, I also like the raw files, which I've quite often tortured in photoshop. :D

The 1D3 is an excellent camera which produces clean files Chris. ISO3200 is eminently usable.

It's built to very tight tolerances, tough as nails and is weather-sealed. One in good condition here would be around £1100-1200. It's excellent value at that price. I still miss mine from time to time.

What do you shoot or want to shoot? I was thinking that if you were looking for IQ there probably hasn't been a better time to buy a 5D2. You'll have low light capability of course while sacrificing frame rate. They're around £1200 or thereabouts on sales forums.

The 1Ds is a full frame camera, hope you are aware?

What are you going to mainly photograph with this body?

1D (1.3x crop, action) v 1Ds (FF, studio, landscapes etc)

Since I have both... well Ds gets picked up 95% of the time. AF is about the same. Ds does 'only' 4 fps and has small buffer so not great for some action, that's what the D is for. IQ is about same once Ds gets cropped to 10MP, probably Ds is still sharper (thinner AA filter on that one). Both are terrible for getting sensor dust. Battery is laughable on Ds, but that is a small price to pay.

Heh ,
Cheers guys.
I mainly shoot aircraft and motorsport. After getting 70/200-2.8 i really wanted to try a pro camera!
i bagged a bargain, from a local camera shop near me, philips cameras, great deal, hopefully the weather will get better, and i can give it a blast!
Hope to put some pics up and you can c&c.

Thanks once again

Steve
