Hi folks i've just graduated from a bridge camera to my first dslr (1100d/ Rebel t3) currently i only have the standard kit lens. Are there any other users out there?
Any tips are most welcome:)
Also i've been reading around for extra lenses and folks seem to advise the nifty fifty to replace the kit lens. Also i'm considering the 55-250 is

Can anyone advise any other options than these lenses? i don't have a lot of money but am really starting to get into photography. Sorry its a long post

Hi Benny, congrats on your purchase/upgrade! I don't own a Canon 1100D myself (Canon 550D for me), but I can confirm that the nifty fifty Canon 50mm 1.8 is a fantastic buy! Highly recommended and can be bought for around £75. The Canon 55-250mm lens is a nice one as well (I dont have one personally, but its on my to buy list).

What kind of things are you hoping to shoot with your new camera?
 
Hi Matt, is the kit lens you have the IS version. The 18-55 IS and the 55-250 IS lenses are highly reccommended for beginners. They are both sharp and the Af is more than reasonable on them both. The IS is very good on both lenses too and you can go a hell of a long way with them.
The 50 f1.8 is a good buy if you get a good one but the build quality isn't too great. A slight drop, or even a big sneeze on it, can make it fall into lots of bits, but it does go back together fairly easy. The copy I had was OK, but I recently got a 50 f1.4 and that is a hell of a lot sharper, although it is 3 times the price. Best thing is to get a few posts on here, access the classifieds and look for a bargain nifty, there's normally a fair few about.
You might not be able to do everything you want with those 3 lenses, but you can do most things with them and are really useful. I've recently sold my copies of all 3 of these as I've now outgrown them, but they were used a lot.
 
Thankyou both for your replies. No my kit lens is not the is unfortunately. Not really sure what type of stuff I want to photograph yet *** its all so new to me..just trying to learn I guess :D
 
Sounds like you're going the same route with lenses I am. I've just ordered a new 55-250 lens and have been looking at the 50 f1.8 also. Be careful if you use eBay as most of the second hand lenses go for more than some new items..

Hi, if your kit lens is the old non-IS version your first step should be to replace it with an IS one, the 50 f1.8 is not a kit lens replacement, it should be viewed as an additional lens for low light or limited depth of field photography.

Thanks Dave. Any ideas to how? i'm assuming i'd never be able to sell a non IS version :thinking:
EDIT: I never thought of it that way, i was thinking the nifty fifty would be a replacement...i think i need to research more :)
How long have you had your 1100?

Does anyone know if there's much difference between the mk 1 &mk2 version of the 18-55IS? some say purely cosmetic and some say optics are better :thinking: No difference in price. Confused

Most of the established sites say same optics, but improved IS in the mark 2.

I would say they are so similar to be considered virtually identical, but if the choice is between a mark 1 and a mark 2 at a similar price then go for the mark 2.

With regard to selling the non-IS, you would be surprised, they sell here for around £25-£30 and even more on eBay (of course probably clearing the same after fees).
 
I've got an 1100d with the non is 18-55 lens, put it on ebay and got £50.00 for it, then put it to wards the 18-135 lens very happy with it so far

Good price, I've seen IS versions sell for £50-£60 on eBay.

IQ wise, I wouldn't really recommend the 18-135 as a main lens, it's a nice walkabout/holiday lens, but doesn't really compare to even the 18-55 IS for IQ.
For example photozone.de concludes in its 18-135 review:
All-in-all it's not one of the more desirable lenses on the market and it's really surprising to see that this lens is bundled with the EOS 7D which is even more demanding in terms of required lens quality than the EOS 50D used for this test.

The 18-55IS and 55-250IS pair are much better for the discerning beginner or amateur who wants good IQ without breaking the bank.

Congrats on your new body Matt :clap:

As others have said, the 55-250IS is a great lens for the price - the difference between the mk I & II version (55-250IS) is purely cosmetic and to do with manufactoring proces - and would fit nicely with your 18-55 lens, giving you a good focal range.

It may well be worth upgrading your 18-55 to the IS version, but I would suggest as you are new to this, use what you have, find it's / your limitations and then decide what you want to upgrade it to - you may find you want a slightly longer focal range, eg 17/15-85 range, you might find you want a faster lens and constant appature, eg F2.8 etc etc.

The nifty fifity (50mm F1.8) is a good lens and a good addition to your camera bag, but personally, I would not replace the 18-55 with the 50mm 1.8, I would have the 2 together.

I also have the EOS 1100 D, mine came with standard kit lens and Tamron 70-300mm lens, I also bought myself a Helios M42 58mm prime with extension tubes for macro.
I absolutely love this camera and reckon it will last me a long time.

I've also recently bought an 1100D as I venture into the world of DSLR's. Mine was part of a twin lens kit with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III and the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III. I'm quite happy with both lenses at the moment.

I've been looking at a "nifty fifty" although reviews of the f/1.8 are that its plasticky and the f/1.4 is three times more expensive.

You could always have a look at the MkI Nifty. It's exactly the same optical arrangement as the current one, but has a metal mount, distance scale, and a better manual focusing ring. Second-hand, they sell for more than the MkII does new, but it is a much better constructed (and sought after) lens.
 
On the flip side the 50 1.8 mk II is very light (due to it's plastic construction)

If you are happy to walk around using a 50 the combination of an 1100D and a 50 1.8 makes for a very light DSLR at around 600 grams all in.

One of the slightly hidden advantages of the lower end kit is it tends to be lighter.
 
Picked up an almost new 50 1.8 from ebay and I'm very impressed with it. It doesn't appear to be of any lesser construction than the kit lenses I got with my 1100D.

Its biggest weakness is the inner barrel, as long as you don't mistreat it or drop it nose first it should last a long time.
 
Here is one from the weekend using a 50 1.8 in exactly the wrong place (it is not a small wildlife lens!). Had to get about 3 foot away to get this and could have done with a bit more DoF to get rear of body sharper but didn't have time to mess about...
