Any good?

Looking for a cheapish brand new DSLR and the above falls into my budget.
I understand there are a few starter DSLR's to pick from but i like the feel of this - is it much better/worse than the others?

Cheers

I have also been having a play with this camera among others (namely the Alpha series, the 200, 230 & 350) and would also be interested in the replies that come from this thread, so thanks for saving me the job of starting one!
Mitch.

no worries mate :)

Although you wrote nearly as much as me anyway :)

Nothing wrong with any of the names above.

Everyone will tell you go into a shop and hold it in your hand. See if it feels 'right'.

Just remember you are buying into a 'system'. Not just a camera but lenses and accessories.

I've got a 1000D and it's well worth the price I paid. I considered the Sony/Nikon but the Canon lens system and the feel of it won me over.

how good is the stock lens?

The 1000D is my first DSLR and I am throughly pleased with it :) From what I have read on here, a lot of people seem to feel that lens quality is more important than an all singing-all dancing body.....

The 18-55 IS is good enough to start out with (much better than the non-IS apparently) I sold it eventually and bought a better 17-55mm f/2.8, but the 18-55mm IS is handy for starting out.

what does IS stand for?

it's quite important if you are shooting low light or low shutter speed.

google the kit your looking for and add "review" to the search terms.

imo the 1000 is not a good camera for a clumsy person (i'm clumsy :) )
and for an extra bit of cash there are other options.

good luck with your choice

I would agree with the previous comment regarding the lens quality is more important than the camera body. I have seen photo's taken with an £800 plus body and a cheapy lens and a £400 body and a better lens, and the latter definetly appears to produce the better results.

Please be aware that Canon now supply the 1000D with the non is 18-55 lens which previously came with the 400D. I have seen this for myself in Jessops & in a local independant shop.

I'm pleased I bought my 1000D earlier in the year as it came with the is 18-55lens.

The 1000D is ideal for my needs as a beginner, but I would advise you to go to a camera shop & hold a few different models & go for the one which you are most comfortable with.
