Hello,

Am undecided, even after checking a few websites, regarding the following choices;

1) Canon EOS 1100D
2) Nikon D5000
3) Nikon D3100

Any views?

Why just these 3? Are you buying used? Whats your budget?

Would say about £300.00 or so, looking at used and new.

Have a Sony A230 but want to upgrade and switch to Canon or Nikon and looking to do bird photography and wildlife sometime in the future.

£300 or so, does that include lenses?

Yeah, but I know that would only cover the Kits lens size and not a decent size lens for birdwatching etc.

That would come later after much begging and borrowing. :)

If you pushed to £350 i would prefer a Nikon D90, which you can pick up for £300 body only used, then get a 18-55 for £50.

Hi Trickstrade,
you have probably chosen by now but I was disappointed to find the D3100 doesn't have a 'Commander Mode'. I was interested in 'Off camera flash' but it looks a bit more complicated now. This probably wont affect you though if your main interest is in birdlife.

Good luck!

Took the plunge and got myself a D90 body for £280 and a Nikon 18-55 VR AF-S DX for around £60. Decision in the end seemed to fall on quality and to build on from there.

To get into birding, will save up for a decent lens eg 70-300mm or something which is cheap but has had good reviews.

Anybody recommend any good D90 books which I can read to help tame the beast that is the D90?

Thanks for advice

Went for the D90 in the end, and now just waiting for it to be delivered along with the lens.

I bought the D3100, I was tempted with the 1100D and Sony A37, but after many reviews and almost a last ditch effort from the 5100D which has come down in price recently.

Being new to photography I'm more than happy with my choice, I know it will take me a long time to get to grips with the camera.
