I bought the lens about ten years ago and have taken many good photographs with it. Unfortunately last year whilst in Moscow it started to malfunction with the Error 99 nightmare and very quickly refused to work. Repairs/refurbishment is silly money and I can purchase a new lens for not much more but the question is which lens to buy. The 17-85 was my 'stick it on the camera and leave it there for almost everything' lens. I have a good long range zoom for distance and sports and wildlife but I need something to replace my 17-85 zoom....any good ideas welcome.

My Brother in Law used this guy a couple years ago, great service. Lens still working fine.

The EF-S 15-85 is the direct replacement for your lens and it is superb.

I have one of these and I agree they are superb. I've kept mine for years even though I don't have a crop sensor camera anymore - thought I might go back. I really ought to sell it.

I tested it against my 16-35 2.8 II L lens - one was better at the edges and the other better in the middle, but I can't quite remember which way round - they were comparable.

I replaced mine with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. There's also a similar Sigma. Obviously these wont give you as much reach as they only go to 50 rather than 85 but maybe they'll both give much better image quality, if you go looking closely, and of course you get the constant f2.8.

Thanks for the responses. I guess you only get what you pay for......

Is the 24-70 f4 L IS USM a viable alternative please?
Doesn't really go wide enough for a crop, if wanting it for standard zoom range purposes.
