Edit: After all the advice below (and my money back from the 400D that didn't show up!) I am 99% sure I am going for the 40D - can get a very good deal on it. One option is to get the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS with it. That's quite an attractive lens for me because I am quite interested in candid photography. But I wanna know: is it any good? Would be interested to hear some reviews or shots taken with it! Thanks.

[So... my long-awaited 400D has not materialized from the godawful eBay company I bought from (note, not a HK seller, but one with 350,000 sales shipping from Manchester!) But I should be getting my cash back asap.

In a way I am pleased though. With the release of the 450D - which does look pretty good - I might have been annoyed with the 400D purchase.

But now I am torn; do I wait a few months to get a 450D or go with the 40D? I am new to DSLRs, but I think I'd get the hang of a new camera pretty quickly...

Any thoughts or comments? Thanks!]

If you can afford the 40D get it, the difference between them will be big enough to warrant the price.

But..

If you buy a camera with the idea that it will be the dogs bits for ever you're always going to be disappointed, there will be a newer model a few months down the road no matter what you buy or when. So make sure you are buying the camera for the photography you can do with it, not because it has a faster spin cycle and more flashing lights.

Go with the 400d or the 450d. Spend a couple of years shooting and enjoying then look to upgrade.

either go for cheaper 400d and spend the saving on better glass as it will make more difference or enjoy the better body?

It depends if you need a the high frames per second for sports for example or shoot a lot in low light at a higher iso.

If the answer is no, I would go for the 450D, the lowest priced is always the best value camera in the range as canon are trying to get you to buy into their lens system and be a customer for life.

You won't notice a difference in the quality of the pictures from both cameras for most everyday applications.

If you'll use 6.5 fps, go for the 40D, it's great for wildlife and is a cracking body. I'd wait for a 450 now though raher than buy a 400.

Have you considered the 30D can be had for a very decent price and still better than a 400D

Thanks everyone for your views. I am still turning the options over in my mind. I've seen quite a good deal on a 40D which includes a Canon 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS Lens.

Does anyone have any experience with that lens and, if so, is it any good?

I'd go for the 40D. Not just because I have one, but more the ergonomics. I had a 300D that was ok, but the 350 and 400 are too small for me.
Tho as has been said if you want the best spend on the glass not the body.

Albedo! Listen: I have a 40D waiting for me at home - and the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS too. I'll be at home in a week - and taking photos using that lens within 8 days ;) I'll be sure to post some and let you know what it's like.

P.S. glad you finally got your money back on that 400D. Bloody scoundrel that seller!

I would say buy the best you can afford now. Convinced a friend [with the help of his missus] to go for a 5D 12 months ago and not wait for the rumoured new version [which we are still waiting for now]. His missus had the logic of "buy it now and get the use out of it rather than wait".

If you ccan afford the 40D and like the bigger size then go for it. Try holding them both though, I was suprised by the differing sizes of the 400 & 40D's.

Hi macmike47,

Did you start a new thread with any test images ? I also would like to see some images taken with this lens before I order it.

The price looks too good to be true however, so I'm very curious.

This lens is not available in the United States, but is in Canada and the U.K. only it seems. I really am scratching my head and wondering why this is ??

Dave.

My one arrived today. Seems pretty good so far but I've only tested it indoor. Hopefully get out at the weekend to give it a proper test.

I'll start a thread at some point with some better images, but for those interested, here are a few so far with this lens.

Sorry for the wait, I got so excited about my new 40D :D I completely forgot about the promise I made :bonk:
