Hi,

I am just starting out and would like to get a zoom lens. We have a nature reserve next door and I also like to take Portrait Shots of my child.

I have been looking at Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS as the best compromise between value and performance. Can anyone suggest another lens about the same value? or confirm that this is the best lens to go for.

Here's a couple of images to show what I like to photograph.

Yea that lens should do the trick for most things. You only need the 75-300mm is you want faster focusing. They 70-200mm F4 non-is is an exceptional lens, look at it also, could be out of your price range compared to the 55-250mm though. The build quality is far higher and the f4 aperture will give you more background blur.

The 75-300 doesnt have faster focusing than the 55-250. Although its USM, the USM on the older 75-300 is slower than a lot of modern non USM lenses!

The 70-300 is faster focusing though!

I don't believe there is a better lens in that price range (£160) not forgetting the IS which I don't think the comparable Sigma and Tamron have.

The 70-300 or 70-200f4 are the next step up you could say, each at a similar price around £400ish

He's right you know!
The 75-300 is a dog compared to the 55-250 (IMO) had both in the past and love (and still have) the 55-250, hated the 75-300 though. I also have the 70-200 F4 L and rarley have it off the body, love it for landscapes too, draws the background in and gives a pleasing perspective to the image.
If your budget is low, go for the 55-250 IS, you won't regret it, it performs well above its price.
Maybe it should be called the 'Nifty 250'?

I have the 55-250. It's a great lens, buy it and you'll love it.

Excellent value for money, if that's your budget you won't be disappointed.

55-250  Bargain lens.

The next one up is the 70-300 IS and that's twice the cost, but not twice as good.

My 1st telephoto was a Tamron 28-300mm. I then sold that and bought the Canon 55-250mm. The quality was loads better, especially under low light.

Ok, I've been persuaded to go for the 70-200 f4 L and am looking at places to buy, can anyone recommend places near Aberdeen? Been looking online and best price so far is £497 from warehouse express. Does anyone know of anywhere cheaper...

Ask Kerso for a price, he's an advertiser on the forum and you get a members discount!

... if you want to go secondhand , then the classifieds here is a good bet , i have just picked one up for £365 , well pleased , i went from a 50 - 250 to a 70 - 300 to the 70 - 200 F4L

Another vote for the 55-250! For the price, weight etc. It is an excellent lens. Try it, you won't be disappointed!
