CANON EF-S 55-250 IS what do you think of it, for butterfly to birds etc

I love mine. It pretty much lives on my camera. I've used it for everything from Macro (with a raynox dcr250 on the nose), aircraft, motorsports (does Goodwood count?) through to flying insets, birds, satellites and the Moon. Most of the pictures I've posted on here have been shot with it. I've even dropped mine with no ill effects (although I wouldn't recommend this test for your health)... The IS is good for shooting at about 1/40 at 250mm and most of my shots with it have been taken hand held, thanks to that.

thank you for replying,.ill have a look at ya pic's then

I like it a lot. It's the best zoom lens in that range for the price (in my opinion). The IS works a treat.

No, it's not the sharpest lens in the world, nor is it terribly fast at focussing. But... it can provide some excellent shots and is well worth the money

Edit: some of my shots with the 55-250.

I would also agree with this entirely - for the money, you'll struggle to find anything with as good image quality - great lens.

Only problem with mine was that being an EF-S mount, it couldn't be used on my new 5D when I upgraded :(

thanks guys, ill have a think on it.i got me 40d so cant see me going to 5d soon

would one of the converters fit/work

Honestly, no idea - haven't looked into it. Knowing what the 5D cost me, its worth far more to put money into L series glass than persist with 'lesser' items so never even investigated.

That said, at times its difficult the distinguish the difference between this lens and other L lenses. The only real limitation is that F5.6 aperture at the long end - in good light its smashing, poorer light and it struggles as you might expect.....

is the 5d a better cam than the 40d,forget that i must concerstate on getting longer lens

Well I would say yes, but then I'm a little biased.

For what I use it for, its perfect - the full-framiness drew me in with the stunning colour ranges picked up. It falls down slightly with a slower-than-40D autofocus but I've used it for motorsport quite a lot and it hasn't failed me yet.

Oh, and the noise handling ability is stunning :D

If I was using solely for sports, or had more need for the crop factor at no-extra lens cost then the 40D would be top of my list, as it happens, the full-frame suits me better.

i use my 40d for reptiles/kids/macro mostly inside i used 100mm macro,
then bif / sometimes landscapes or secnery

I thought that the 55-250 was a cracking lens. It was very versatile and managed bugs and insects all the way through to birds. The IS was great - Bang for buck you can't beat it. But ............ If you want to spend a little more .....................!!!! Try a bit of L glass, then you'll be hooked!!

well got me 100mm macro and 17-40 l which use now an then,

so either 55-250 or 100-400mm or 400mm l

Having had both the 55-250 and the 100-400, I can say that these are in a different league. I really enjoyed the 55-250, when I couldn'y justify spending over £900 on one lens. Now that I can justify all sorts to myself, I certainly wouldn't give up my 100-400 in exchange for the 55-250!

I think you first need to set a budget then your choice will be easy!

Less than £200 - 55-250
3-4 times that amount, go for either the 100-400 or 400 prime. Now that IS a hard choice.
