Nice to read about the 50D, but since I have a 40D I won't be upgrading it any time soon. But one thing thing did please me when I was reading about the 50D, and that's the news about Canon's new lens, the EF-S 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It's certainly a lens that I would love to have to replace my 17-85 lens since I've often needed to zoom in closer to people, scenes, etc

My main concern is that is uses a micro motor system for autofocus, rather then the ring-type USM found on other Canon lenses. Is this a bad thing? If so, why? And will it make that much of a difference when taking photos? I don't really know much about the hardware side on lenses, etc

It will be slower focusing and noiser than the USM driven lenses.

Its one of the things they have done to keep the cost down...

I suspect it won't be a bad lens, but equally don't expect L series...

Looking at the price being bandied about for it you'd be better off buying a 70-200mm F4L and changing lenses when you need a bit more reach. Not only would it save you a bit of money but it'll give you much better images, I've yet to be convinced by any of these super zoom lenses the trade off in quality is a bit much and surely one of the main advantages of owning an SLR is that you can change lenses to suit the situation?

Well, yes, in the past the Canon super zooms have been amongst the poorest bang per buck in their range... Bob Atkins reckons the US street price of this lens will be just short of US$700, and I doubt if that means we will get it for 350 quid... more like 450 at the least! Which is a lot of money in my book for a EFS mount non-USM lens...

As a1ex2001 says, the 70-200 f4 is a better bet - and amongst the best lenses Canon have ever made....

I reckon it will be a cheapo lens for about £150

From Bob Atkins:

Here's a copy of Canon's brief press release:

Canon has answered the call from advanced amateur photographers looking for a solid all-around lens with the introduction of the new EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. With an incredible focal length range equivalent to 29-320mm in the 35mm format, the new EF-S 18-200mm lens will make an excellent addition to any camera bag, and it gives shooters a great lens to capture both standard as well as telephoto images. The new lens features Canon's built in Optical Image Stabilization system which gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed roughly 4 steps faster, for better image clarity, even in shaky shooting conditions. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.45m/1.5 ft. at all zoom settings, this new lens should prove to be ideal for those situations where swapping lenses isn't an option. An ideal complement to the EOS 50D SLR camera and all other EF-S compatible EOS SLR cameras, the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is scheduled to be in stores this October at an estimated selling price of $699.00*.

And that is Bob quoting Canon USA

Bob too wonders why Canon have bothered!!

The fact it's non-usm indicates to me it will be nothing more than a budget lens.

I wouldn't take any notice of that RRP

Thanks for the replies. So it looks like I'm better off with my 17-85 lens as my walkabout lens then getting the new 18-200 by the sounds of it. Things like slower focusing is not a sacrifice that I'm willing to make.

Hopefully one day in the near future Canon will release a better lens!

I doubt they will make a quality lens in a super zoom- its not something serious pros would want. They prefer to have a shorter focal length range but the best possible glass and just change it when needed.

This sort of thing is always going to be amateur hour, and consequently the well made f2.8 10-300mm IS is not going to sell when its 4500 quid...

The Nikon 18-200 is £400+, but then it has AF-S (=USM) as well as VR (=IS).

The canon has IS

Which is demonstrated to be expensive, so you have to wonder why the USM is not present when that is maybe a $50 extra...
