Hi

How good is this as a lens as ive noticed that it comes as a kit lens on the new 40D
Would it be worth getting it as a body only or with kit lens attached.

The kit lens is fantastic, and well worth the extra money that you'll pay for it.
I don't own one, or a 40d for that fact, but I work in jessops, and get to play with the 40d and the 17-85 all the time.

I bought one for a replacement for the original kit lens (17-55 EFS) on my 20D a couple of years ago, used it for a while, but became frustrated with it.
I guess because I bought a 70-200 f2.8 L and found out what lenses could do. Compared against this its .. as you might expect.
