Hi,

I have an opportunity to get one either the EF-S 17-55mm or the EF 24-105mm F4L at a good price.

The camera is 600d so a crop sensor; I'm not to clear on whether the 17mm and 24mm bottom end is actually a direct comparison - may be a dumb question but are the focal lengths on the EFS adjusted for the crop i.e. a 16mm EFS = 10mm EF?

Won't have a chance to attach and see for myself so relying on your collective wisdom!

Future proofing (moving to full sensor) is hanging about in the back of my mind but I don't think a major consideration.

Thanks in advance!

Will :)

No. Common question, but the lens you want is the 17-55. Excellent it is too, though the 24-105 is very similar, but only when used on a full-frame camera.

In answer to the original question no they are not. So the the 17-55 on a crop is like a 27-88 full frame and the 24-105 would be 38-168 on a crop. So with one you get less reach and the other less wide end.

As to whether you want the 17-55 or 24-105 is up to you and what you want it for to decide. As you are probably aware the 17-55 will not fit on a FF if you go that way. The EF-S 15-85 is actually closer in terms of focal length at 24-135 equivalent.

Tough call, 24-105 is a sturdier build, but if mine is anything to go by the 17-55 is excellent image wise

So the 17-55 it is by a whisker mainly for the extra stop

Is that because of the metal barrel on the 24, rather than the plastic on the 17?

Watching the DigitalRev review (entertaining) it cites the glass on the 17-55 is L grade.

It's a good opportunity so I'll ponder on it a little.

Thanks folks.

I've gone from d7 w/17-55 f2.8 to a 5d3 w/24-105. I miss the 17-55 ;-(. On a crop camera, i'd deffo go for the 17-55 2.8.

24-105 If you thinking of moving to FF.

17-55 If your staying cropped.

It depends on what you shoot really, the 17 is very useful on a cropped sensor, and to be fair the 24 is just too long on it, for landscapes and even if its mainly people you shoot.

Both are excellent lenses optically, I have a 17-55 and just love it. My brother had a 24-105 and ended up changing his to a 17-55 after he borrowed mine, the extra stop is what attracted him.

But if you are planning to move to FF in the near future then I would get a 24-70 or the 24-105.

Realistically I am unlikely to move to full frame, as I said in the original post it's at the back of my mind but not a real consideration.

This lens is really intended to replace the kit lens which is pants tbh, even compared to the nifty 50 and nifty 250mm.

Thanks for all your input folks, looks like it's the 17-55mm!

I have both on a 7D, both great but I have to say 17-55 is more versatile, both for the extra stop and the width. The optics are L quality as well. It's rarely off my camera!
