I recently bought my first DSLR - a Canon EOS5D2 - and very pleased I am with it as well. Selling some of my film gear gave me enough to buy the Canon 70-200 f2.8L lens and when compared against the 'plastic' 80-200 Canon lens I was using before, there was no competition. However, I now need to get something to cover the 20-70 range and whilst the L series 24-70 f2.8L looks good, I am tempted to look at two prime lenses instead. The zoom costs around £1030 but that sort of money buys an 20mm f2.8 and a 50mm f1.4 with £300 left over. Resolution on these lenses seems to be as good as L series zooms...? Can anyone advise which of the primes are the best?

There's also the 24-105mm f4l is for £700, something I'm pondering on myself at the moment.

I know this doesn't answer your actual question but thought I'd let you know I bought the 24-70 a couple of months ago and paid a little under £900 iirc. Shop about a bit as you can get some damned good deals out there. (But check on here and elsewhere if the shop is any good before spending your hard earned!).

If you're in the market for a 50mm f1.4 I think that you should take a look at the Sigma 50mm f1.4. It's obviously not an L but some people think that it's optically better than the Canon.

If you're looking at the Canon 20mm f2.8 you could also look at the Sigma 20mm f1.8.

I have both of these Sigma's and I think that they're both excellent.

I had my first proper go with my 50mm f/1.4 today and it blew me away. To hell with the fact that it isn't actually that well built, that it has a crap focus ring and needs a hood due to the front bit protruding when you focus; it produces beautiful images, even at f/2. I had to pin back the amount of sharpening I apply in DPP by default as the lens is sharp enough from the outset, the colour rendition is so gorgeous I needn't touch the saturation tab or the contrast tab... compared to the kit glass it's galaxies apart!

It must be easily as good as the L zooms, and is rated better than the 50 1.2L after about f/2.8 I think - the 50 1.2L is only really geared for wide open use, which is of course where it excels.
