Canon EF 75-300 mm f4/5.6 MK3 Non USM Lens any good?

I think the Canon 55-250 is supposed to be better than both... and has IS

The Tamron does not have IS

whats IS? Image stabilizer? How do you find the 450D any good?

whats IS?

IMAGE STABILISER - Helps avoid blur caused by camera / lens movement - especially a problem with longer telephoto lenses. It does not help remove subject movement, however.

The 55-250mm IS is a MUCH better lens! I have never regretted buying mine, and I doubt I will ever sell it! My images improved no end after I started using it! (Doddering ol git with shaky hands!)
If you click on my Fickr link, most of the pics on there were taken with this lens, including the BOPs head shots.

wow there great, do you use it in mf or af? does it have any macro ability? 1:2 maybe?

Both manual and af. The af is a little noisy, (compaired to my L lens anyway!) but quite acceptable. It dosn't have macro, but is great with a Raynox!

It's there to help reduce camerashake, which cause blurred images. Few photographers are able to hold a camera steady at slower shutter speeds. IS (Image Stabilisation) allows you to handhold a lens and use a slower shutter speed than you normally be able to.

The old rule is choosing a shutter speed equivalent to the lens focal length, e.g. 250mm lens use 1/250th/sec shutter speed. Slower speeds may lead to camera movement and consequently unsharp images. With IS and good handholding technique you can bring the shutter speed used right down.

The 75-300 is supposed to be one of Canon's all time worst lenses. The 70-300 is much much better, as is the 55-250
Of the aftermarket ones, eg Sigma or Tamron, I would recommend the Sigma 70-300 APO over the others.

My choice - Canon 55-250IS followed by Sigma 70-300APO unless you can stretch to the Canon 70-300 IS.

ok, i dont know what radox is, is £550 for the camera and 50-250mm canon lens a good deal?

RAYNOX Sounds OK! Where from?

Radox is for the bath! Not some where you should take a camera! (or lens!)

Avoid the Canon 75-300 unless you really, absolutely, positively can't afford to spend any more. It's one of Canon's worst lenses, I got given one by a friend so can speak from experience.

That's not to say it's not possible to get anything decent with it, but the 55-250 IS is so much better that you'd be better served by that and overlooking the extra 50mm at the long end.

Anythin past 200mm on the 75-300 is very soft at the edges working into the centre of the frame.
I had the 75-300mm when I had my EOS 300X, needless to say it sat in the bag more than on the body!

I use the 75-300 and I'm going to upgrade it as soon as I can. You could really do with IS unless you're using a tripod or it's a very bright day.

The 70-300 IS is a fair chunk more money so I'd say go for the 55-250

ive got the 75-300 and the 55-250 is, the 55-250 is far superior and outclasses the 75-300 at everything. the 75-300 sits in the bag or is left at home as up until recently i had the tamron version **** is a far better lens

The 55-250 is soon to be my lens of choice for that focal length area.

I would personally go for the 55-250 IS but i did recently purchase a Canon 100-300mm USM lens on here for a good price and am very very happy with the results it produces.

In my experience, the 75-300mm isn't very good.

Id take the 55-250mm over it every time unless you REALLY need the length of the 300!

However, i've also used the tamron 70-300mm and in my opinion the canon is margainly bettter than the tamron

An example shot with the canon 75-300mm :

Hope that helps

I am very happy with my 450D.. It is my first DSLR and it has been easy to get to know and use so far.

Check out my flickr if you want to see the results from a beginner.
