The older 70-200 f/2.8's and a 2x TC are not known for being a great combination if you are after ultimate sharpness.

I think the Q you need to ask yourself is whether you need 400mm that often, or whether your primary use of the lens will be without an extender on it.

At 400mm, a 100-400 will outperform the 70-200 with the 2x attached. The 1.4 is usually better.

I don't know if the new MkII would improve on that with the MkIII converter but then the price tage is about double...

If using the TC is a occasional thing, then you'll probably be fine. Else you may want to give serious thought to a 100-400 instead if you want to stay in the same price bracket.
 
You could just keep the Tamron? How much do you think you would get for it second hand? (You called it cheap).

I have the 75-300 IS Canon, and I purchased the 100-400 L IS Canon as an upgrade. I keep the 75-300, for times when I don't want to take such a large lens out. The 70-200 f/2.8 is going to be a heavy lens (I have used the IS version, assume it is only slightly heavier), there might be times when you don't want such a heavy lens.

The 70-200 f/2.8 with the 2x extender, is going to be f/5.6 at the long end anyway. It is going to be just as slow as your Tamron I guess (so no benefit).

I use my 70-200 f/2.8 IS very occasionally with a 2x Mkll extender and for my purposes, its OK but the IQ is far better when using the lens with my 1.4 x extender. I think if you shoot motorsport for the majority of time and need 400mm, the 70-200 + 2x extender isn't the combo for you.

Thanks for your replies! my Tamron cost me about 100 quid brand new and the camera is out performing it as it struggles to focus at the best of times. I backed away from the 100-400 as I heard it wasn't the best. I am a bit stuck now! I just feel 200mm is a bit short, I find 300mm just right but would be ideal to find a 2.8 version around the £1000 bracket. Any people could suggest to me?

Where did you hear that? If you want 400mm and a zoom, nothing beats it. It even pips the Mk2 70-200 2.8 with a 2x extender, also the 300 + 1.4x, and thrashes the Mk1 70-200s.

If you don't need 400mm, the 70-300L is very nice :)
