I've got some theatre work coming up soon (Amateur Dance Show), and am going to hire the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 lens to help me out with it.

Trouble is - I am torn about which variant to hire.

http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/ have them at the following prices.

  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM - £61.00
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM - £80.00
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM - £91.00

I am not 100% sure I need IS , as I am shooting moving objects mainly (dancers) so it may not help that much.

For the difference in price between the L and L IS II, I could put it towards an 85mm 1.8 I want to get too.

Anyone used either of these lenses (in or out of the theatre world) who could offer some advice?

Cheers

Theatre lights will mean you need as much light as possible with fastest shutter possible, the ISII probably gives 2+ extra stops of light so go for that :D

Its better to have it and not need it than be standing there on the night calling yourself a **** because you didn't get it :D

Get the new mark II. It is amazingly superb and certainly worth a few quid over the other ones, both of which I have used. I now have the new one.

I wasn't blown away by the sharpness of the non IS 70-200 2.8. Not tried the other versions yet.

The 85mm 1.8 is a great lens, possibly my favourite.

If it helps, I use the 70-200 f2.8 non IS for eventing. Generally at the shutter speeds I'm using, IS is not necessary (1,650th and up). It may depend on your camera's high ISO quality as to the speed you can shoot at in poor light. Not had a play with the new 2.8IS mk2 so can't comment but my copy of 70-200 is bang - on. A little more info re your kit may help.
BTW I'm not that far from you - Rainhill.

Um, yes it will?

As others have said, go for the IS II and marvel at how stunning it is
