Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Probably me being thick, but what does this mean?

Mick

I think it means there maybe thoughts of a MKII version coming out, so they were clearing stock.

Think it's immaterial now as they seem to be canceling all orders

just loged onto Jessops to track my order and it has been cancelled

I have not had a phone call or email from Jessops which I think is pretty poor customer service.

I guess the few of you that picked them up from the stores were lucky, I did try to but all the local stores were out of stock.

no email here but I did get a phone call, thing is I didn't really want a 50mm but now I do but not at the new price!

Just checked on mine and it is still there on back order - no sign of it being cancelled yet..

How much better is the 1.4 than the 1.8 at low light focusing? .

It isn't. The 1.8 is just noisier. They both have junky focus motors and although the build quality of the 1.4 is better, it isn't £200 better. I had a 1.8, sold it for a 1.4 because I thought it would be worth it, ended up getting sick of the 1.4 as well and sold it. If I were to buy one back, it'd be the 1.8.

I had zero problems with low light focussing on my Nifty. Before I sold it, it was used pretty much exclusively for gigs in dingy pubs and clubs and had no problems at all.

Hu? The f1.4 is USM and far from "junky" focusing IMO... it blows the f1.8 away I regards to build quality.

True, the f.18 is a stunning lens for the money and I've used mine a LOT (an awful lot!) but as my f1.4 was only £100 more than the f1.8 it was a good buy :p

Ive had a 50mm f/1.4 (also from Jessops a few years ago) but dont use ti much.
Its a nice lens but i find due to the focal length and lack of Is i use my 17-55IS f/2.8 most fo the time.
I do take the 50mm out if im travelling light, or want to get a bit arty.
I find the sharpness to be pretty evenly matched between the two although ive not done any real tests.

Its definitely a good lens to have for those times when you need a more narrow DOF.

IMO of course.
