Hello everyone!! I'm an owner of Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens which I'm really pleased with but recently I started thinking about getting Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. I know that is a very good lens for the money (185.95 at Jessops) but at the same time I'm not sure if it will give me something I didn't get from my old lens. Would it be worth spending the money for Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 to have it as the second lens?? I'm thinking about the size of a lens as well, because Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS doesn't allow me to take it everywhere with me because of its size. Thank you for any suggestions and opinions!
Take care:)

189 @ Jessops?!?!

I had one till last week and BOKEH was great but fixed focal length ****ed me off

Don't even think about it at that price - get one tomorrow if you can. Then see if you like it. If not, you'll be in profit even selling on as second hand!!

I can see Jessops being sold out very very quickly and them all appearing on ebay shortly afterwards. £100 off usual price?

Ignoring price, back to it as a second lens, I had the 17-55 2.8 and the 50mm 1.8 at the same time too, and they worked for me in very different ways. The fixed 50mm made me think differently, and the shallower DOF also helped inspire me. Even now, I have a 50mm 1.4 and it is overlapped in focal range by other lenses, but I still wouldn't get rid of it. On my 5D it's sublime.

Because of it's size, it's sometimes nice to go on a night out, travelling light, with just the 50mm on.

Let us know if you got it for that price!

Already ordered!!:) Thanks!! I just needed answer like that. Hopefully will be pleased with my new purchase if not as you said I will just sell it :D

I'm considering the 60 mile round trip to pick one up for that price! Madness.

Bargain price there at Jessops. I paid £220 two years ago for mine, and that was a good deal back then, before Canon upped their prices. The next best price on CPB today is £275. Go fill yer boots at Jessops before anyone notices.

You can also get (almost) 4% cash back at Jessops from TopCashBack if you fancy.

Blimey, the price I got mine for doesn't even register on that :D

How much better is the 1.4 than the 1.8 at low light focusing? I just sold my 1.8 as i`d bought a 17-50 2.8 but if the 1.4 is considerably better im tempted to buy one for that price.

wow great price.

buy one try it if you dont like it sell it and make £50 profit.

It's not a night and day improvement, but it is better. However, I was expecting more. The fact is that the lens is a very old design and does not have the ring USM motor of more sophisticated lenses. It has micro USM, which is inferior. See this post - http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=15260787.

When performing AF calibration checks I found that the lens would not focus at the same point repeatedly, just the same as the 50/1.8. At f/1.4 that's something you notice. Still, it is quieter and you do stand a fighting chance of being able to focus manually with better precision than the (almost impossible) 50/1.8.

It is also a little bit "dreamy" when used wide open. Not unpleasant, and maybe even an advantage for portraiture, but definitley not bitingly sharp.

There is also a known mechanical fault (or is it a feature?) in the design of the 50/1.4. If pressure is exerted on the front of the lens when it is focused at other than infinity it is possible to wreck the AF drive mechanics. Such pressure might come from a knock or getting a bit squashed in a camera bag. The solution is either to always remember to store/secure the lens at the infinity end of the scale and/or to fit a hard hood of proper design (not one that screws to the filter thread) and leave it permanently in the ready to use orientation. If you do mash the AF drive there might be a DIY fix, requiring a rather robust twist of the lens to try to realign the gearing, but it might also mean a trip to a service centre.

I do prefer the 50/1.4 to the 1/8, but at more regular prices it's hard to see a leap in quality that justifies the price hike, but then that's probably true of the 50/1.2 over the 50/1.4 as well, with bells on. But at these Jessops prices, why not? :D

oops someone has cocked up at jessops i think..

if so they are completely within thier rights to cancel the order and refund those that have bought it before sending it out. i cant believe they wont notice the error..

Thanks for that, still undecided though. Feels a bit daft buying a 1.4 just a week after selling the 1.8 as i felt it a bit redundant with my 17-50, its just at this price im seriosuly considering it. Got one reserved at a jessops ive got to drive past this afternoon so need to make up my mind by then!

Update:

Just had a text through saying my orders ready for collection, so now i know its not just an error they wont honour im even more tempted!! :bonk:

I think Jessos have a pretty generous returns period - 30 days or so, or at least it used to be. You might as well buy it, give it a good workout and see if it's a keeper.

I have to say, mine gets very, very little use, not because of anything wrong with the lens, but because I'm more of a "zoom" sort of guy and with lots of f/2.8 zooms to play with I rarely find myself screaming out for faster apertures. But that's me. :)

Great another %&*(&*% deal and lens to good to ignore that I've shelled out for...at least i've ordered home del. which gives me a few days to think up some b$ to the wife...

actually got it! as we have out first baby on the way this spring, will be the perfect lens to capture the lil one without flash!

Holy moly that's a low price.

I'm almost tempted to order one and sell it on to make an easy £50. If only I actually had £185 spare.
Had a quick scan on ebay and not many USED ones go for sub £200

i picked one up from jessups today so its not a mis price. The guy in the shop seemed to think there was a mk ii in the offing but couldnt pass it by at this price. I can sell my nifty fifty now too which sweetens it even more!

gone back up to £289 it seems.. I missed the boat :(

If anyone got it and doesn't want it and is kind enough I'd buy it off you + more :)

lol was it from the llandudno store as that was the only store that was avalible for a store pickup "near" me......not!

Picked mine up from Cirencester today... big gap in the display where the lens should have been with a price tag of £309.95! No hassle buying and with the 5DII purchase in November I'll be taking advantage of the £25 rebate... this is an insane bargain

well done there,I'll be for ever checking my emails now, waiting for the "sorry we made a mistake" email,it does say they have the right to concel at any time before payment is taken:eek:

£285.95 now online. Might walk into town tomorrow and see if theres one in stock at a bargain price... :(

I dont think most of use will be getting our orders:

Please note: We do not charge your credit/debit card until the goods are dispatched. We reserve the right to withdraw an item from sale for any reason at any point prior to dispatch.

I was looking at getting one in the next couple of months, looks like I will need to keep saving.

I picked mine up earlier today from Boston. Cracking bargain. Still not had chance to test it yet though. I might off load my 1.8 or trade this for a 17-50 Tamron. Decisions... decisions.

I'm sure there isn't much profit on lenses, its a big loss for Jessops, £100 down on each lens and I bet they easily sold over 100 of them, that's at least £10,000 down in one day.

Has anyone tried picking up a reserved one today? Dont really wanna make a trip only to find out their refusing the price.

just got the phone call from Jessops....CANCELLED oh well neally was lucky,he said they were 370 orders getting cancelled, not sure about pickups might be worth a try oh they may still mess up on that.

In the suppliers section of the classifieds on here, there is a thread and some posts saying they have had a call re a reserve and collect item, and had it cancelled it at that price
