I have a Canon EF 28-135mm F3.5 - 5.6 IS USM Zoom Lens that just continually 'hunts' while trying to auto focus. Even if I provide a good focus point, it fails and just hunts!

I have no idea why this is happening just wondering if this would be an easy fix? Is it worth spending any money getting it repaired or is there anything I could do?

Thanks

John

Do you have other lenses that work on that camera? Can you try the lens on another camera?

You could try cleaning the contacts on the lens and on the camera.

If it is a fault with the lens I doubt that it will be economical to fix. I had this issue with a Canon lens approx 20 years ago. The repair cost quote was too high to make it worthwhile.

Hopefully this doesn't happen with your lens.

Thanks for reply,

Yes, other lenses focus fine on both my 5D MK3 & my new R8. I'll certainly try your suggestion of cleaning the contacts on the lens - the least I should do :) I agree that a lens repair would likely be expensive and not worthwhile.

Thanks for taking the time.

Not to put too fine a point on it; it wasn’t a good lens at its best.

there’s loads of better alternatives

I owned the 18-135mm for the Canon 450D. Lovely lens. Took too many photos with it. It was a nice upgrade from the 18-55mm 'kit' lens.

I suspect there's a broken cable inside the lens and it's not worth repairing. A 24-85 mm would be my first choice for a cheap replacement and next to it a 24-70mm f/4, all used of course. The latter is an excellent lens and there's no better alternative for a standard zoom with a built-in stabiliser.

Cleaning made no difference unfortunately. I agree with comments about the lens - not worth spending money on!

Thanks all
