 Hi all, just joined the forum and must admit pretty new to this kind of thing, must have had my head in the sand!!!! Just after a some advice, comments and opinions, quite new to photography and been snapping away the last six months with a Canon 400d, been using the kit lenses and looking to upgrade, i'm after a good semi all purpose lens for portrait and landscape photography, i seem to be heading in the direction of the Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8L USM, before i part with my hard earned cash i was hoping for a few views about the lens if anyone can help...

Much appreciated..

Carl

It's arguably one of the best quality standard zooms that Canon makes (with the other being the 24-105 f4L IS) you certainly wont be disappointed with the image quality or the build quality.

one thing to consider though is that it is designed primarily for full frame or 35mm bodies and so you would lose the wide angle that you get with the kit lens. Also it is very heavy compared to the kit lens.

Another option to consider would be the 17-55 f2.8 as this is specifically designed for crop bodies such as your 400d.

Used and abused mine for the past 7 years and still looks almost new. Only wish it had IS but apart from that I wouldn't be parted form it.

I dont think anyone regrets owning one, its big and heavy but a cracking lens.

Thanks for reply and comments, i would be looking to upgrade to a full frame camera in the future, but at this moment in time the advise about the 17-55 f2.8 has got me thinking and like you say might be the better option, crop value is something i have not looked into and need to do a bit of reading up, just read a few reviews about the 17-55 f2.8 and sounds a cracking lens and probably more compatible to the 400d..

Thanks for the imformation, much appreciated.

Portraits yes, great lens, the right kit of the job. Landscapes on a cropped sensor camera, there in lies a problem, you're aware that due to the smaller sensor on the 400D, this lens will actually frame like a 38.4-122mm lens, therefore you actually lose the wide angle capability of this lens.

An alternative could be the 17-55mm f2.8 IS which will get you both, ok no L series build quality, but L series optics and an ideal walk around lens as well.

I'm not knocking the 24-70mm, its a great lens, but really intending more for a full frame camera.

Cheers, nice to read it has stood the test of time.

Thanks for reply.

Thanks for information and tech spec of framing, had a feeling the wide angle would suffer but not to that extent, as previously mentioned and reiterated by you good self the 17-55 f2.8 IS is going to be my better option on the 400D, seem to have a lot to learn at the mo....

Thanks for taking the time to reply..

Why not look at a Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 18-50 both constant 2.8. Dont have the build quality of any of the Canon's but very good lenses for the money.

If you're planning on upgarding to FF then the 24-70L, built like a tank, weather sealed, sharp at f2.8, USM etc.... downside - heavy.

Cheers i'll check them out and have a look at image quality between the three before i part with the cash.

Thanks for info :)

There is also the new 15-85IS lens to consider, which while lacking the constant wide aperture, does have that extra bit of reach for portraits, and a wider angle for landscapes. I tend to use the 24-105L for portraits and have a 10-22 for landscapes etc.

Certainly worth checking out, trying to get the best of both worlds with one lens! maybe not the way to go? Thanks for pointig the 15-85IS lens out.. With so much choice it's not easy which to go for?

Thanx for reply..

My 24-70L should be here any day now. I currently shoot on a 40D, but looking to go full frame this year too. By all accounts one of the best zoom lenses made, but depends if you miss the wide end, and how long before you are thinking of going FF if you do. I am looking to go FF by May/June, but if your waiting a while the Tamron 17-50 is great value for money ad a great stop gap if you think you will miss the wide end.

Not sure when the FF will come at the moment, heard great reviews about the 24-70L and still in two minds to go with it and look at buying a cheaper lens for the wide angle, the advise of going with the 17-55 f2.8 IS has got me thinking, i'll check the Tamron out in the mean time. Happy shooting with the 24-70L, i'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Thanks.

You really would have to kill me to get hold of my 24-70, it's a fantastic lens

I have one for my 500D and love it. I thought that if I ever need to go wide I will just use the kit lens 18mm should be ok and so far it has been. But the number of times I need to go wide I can usually take a step back or 2 or 18mm hasn't been wide enough anyway. I plan to go full frame so am looking for a nice wide angle lens at the moment but the really wide ones are for crop sensors like the 10-20 sigma and the 10-22 canon the widest canon L is the 16-35 f/2.8 I think.

From what I read a 10-22mm is actually 16-35mm, even on a crop camera. Therefore your best bet for a full frame camera is something like the Canon 16-35mm or 17-40mm.
