Since I bought my first 5D in June 2007 I've mainly used the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM that I purchased with the camera at the time.
Over the ensuing period I've become less satisfied with the fringing and lens aberration issues, which I frequently need to correct in software. I do also have an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (the Mk I version) which, although it's a cracking lens when it comes to sharpness and extremely low aberration at 24mm, it doesn't have IS, nor does it go quite long enough for most of my needs, so unfortunately it sits in a drawer most of the time.
Now that Canon has recently announced the EF 24-105mm f/4L II IS USM (due for release later this month) I'm really hoping that it will represent a sea change in quality from the original. Until the reviewers have done their in-depth stuff (other than quick beta version reviews that are already out there) I shall be holding my breath. If the sharpness of the new lens is reckoned to be on a par, say, with my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, I'll go for the new 24-105 and sell my existing two lenses to offset the not inconsiderable cost of the new one.
