Now they seem to have fixed the teething problems with these lenses I am seriously considering buying one and would appreciate any thoughts/comments/experience anyone may have.

I want to use this as my main walkabout lens. I have considered the 24-70 but its very heavy and not really long enough (currently use 70-300 DO IS as main lens).

Current lenses listed in sig. Medium term future probably includes the following:
Replacement for Canon EOS 20D instead of 350D
Canon 70-200 F2.8L to replace 70-300 DO
Wide angle 10-20 or 12-24
Dedicated Macro lens
Canon 17-40L (if I get more interested in landscapes)

Thanks
Mark

Do you know anyone that can supply them ?

I was thinking of this a few months ago for exactly the same reason as a walk-about lens but I cannot find anyone that can get stock (in the UK)?

I was a bit cynical about the f4 rating though, but like the idea of IS as I wouldnt be using a tripod most of the time.

I have the 17-40L and 70-200L which are both F4. Like you I was a little concerned about them not being faster lenses but for the most part I have never had any problems and believe I have never missed a shot due to that. With the 24-105 having IS that is good for about 2 stops anyway (for most people) and with the range of the lens being ideal as a walkaround I would doubt that you would get any problems.

From all accounts the “fixed” lenses are returning stunning results.

How much lighter is it than the 24-70 though as you say that is very heavy?

24-70
Max. diameter x length (mm) 83.2 x 123.5
Weight (g) 950

24-105
Max. diameter x length (mm) 83.5 x 107
Weight (g) 670

I think this makes the 24-105 just a bit lighter than your 70-200.

I was planning to pre-order through Warehouseexpress or if they cant give me a expected delivery date then order from Adorama and pay the duty (did that with my 400mm F5.6L).

Must admit I really fancy that 24-105. It's a very strong contender for my next lens.

A great lens, it's a really useful range. when I had a 20D I used to take the 24-105mm and a 18-50mm Sigma EX in my coat pocket. This was great for walks with the kids etc. where a long lens wasn't needed. It has a reasonably close focus as well which I've found useful when I didn't have a macro lens for flowers and stuff.

Now I have a 5D and this lens has enough wide-angle for me, I do miss the extra reach though and tend to feel the need to carry a 70-200mm with me to compensate.

Thanks for the comments. I have now ordered one from Warehouseexpress, com. Apparently they have over forty on back order but are expecting to be able to clear those before the end of the month. Slightly longer wait than I had hoped but their price is pretty reasonable so I'll cope.

mfwild13 I have a 350D (Rebel XT) 16-35, 28-135, 70-200,& 100-400 Lenses I have to replace 28-135 because I do not like it.So when I save enought money I shall get 24-70 I dont care about the Weight as I would rather have quality. Sean
