Hi
I am looking at this lens and wondering why this time last year they were selling for £800 and then the MKII arrived and it now sells for around £550.
As the MKII arrived shortly after the 5DMKII i wondered if the MKI lens is not so hot on the 5DMKII hence the arrival of the MKII lens.

Anyone able to shed any light on this?

The MkII arrived in Feb 07....around 18 months before the 5DII.

The MkI was a replacement for the 17-35/2.8L but it had problems with softness and flare (and was seen by many as inferior to the 17-35).

The MkII addressed these issues and seems to be an excellent product.

I was looking at these lenses around this time last year. It seems that the MkI is a great lens but does have problems with sharpness around the edges, more so because it's an UWA on a 5DII. It was corrected on the MkII and I think it is a lot better lens than the MkI.

Review here - http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-16-35mm-f-2.8-L-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx - gives a bit more information about the differences.

Thanks David that is what i feared. my budget will not stretch to the MKII.
I dont suppose you know if the EF17-35 f2,8 suffers on a 5D MKII?

I use my 17-35 on my 5DII.....not often as I prefer to use primes but it's not a bad combination.

No comparison between the Mk1 and 2. I used to stitch images together in PS rather than use the Mk1, Mk2 has been an excellent performer :)

16-35 mk1's appear to be a bit & hit and miss, some of them are really good with others being a bit poor. just ask to see plenty of shots taken with it if buying a second hand one, fwiw I have a Mk1 and it's a crackin lens and maybe raymondo can add to this as he uses his Mk1 on a 5Dmk2.

Maybe i should be looking for a 17-35 rather than a 16-35 MKI then as surely 1mm cant make much difference.
