Canon EF 100mm f2.8 USM Macro Lens

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum but have been into photography for several years now. I was wondering if anyone has this lens and how it fairs when taking non-macro shots? Is it worth the £300 or so asking price?

The lens is question is a very good performing lens. I use one from time to time and the image quality is excellent. If you keep your eyes open on the sale forum good examples of this lens can be had for £220 upwards. If money is no object the L series is Image stabilised and is somewhat better. For the money it is superb. Which i had time to use mine more.

regards

thanks for the info. I wish money was no issue but i think i can stretch to 200-300 pounds for a 2.8 or better 100mm lens.

I have the non-IS version and it's fantastic for macro work, but ideally you do need to couple it with a flash for a lot of macro work. It's a great portrait lens too.

I'm thinking of selling mine as I recently picked up a 85mm and hardly do much macro....and I'm trying to save up for a 5D3. Will be sad to see it go if I do go ahead with it!

I just got this lens to try out some macro and I must say I am very impressed with the sharpness. I do use it on the full frame so dont have to worry about the crop. The normal non IS is much sharper than my 24-105 L. It does work great for portrait and macro and isolating subjects in a crowd. Just awesome for the price.

Thanks very much. :)

You can't go wrong with the lens, but just bear in mind that on a crop you will need a decent shutter speed, so a flash will be handy to help at times...especially to get the dof necessary for macro work. Good luck with your purchase. If I sell mine soon, I'll let you know...just trying to sell my 30D and 40D first before I make my final decision...but it is likely to go. :)
