Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens - Any good?

Morning,

Just wondering if this lens is any good. Looking to get a bit more into the macro world, bugs, insects, flowres etc. If anyone has one of these can they post some of their close ups. And what distance do people usually shoot from , or can shoot from to get a shot a fly etc.

they're very good indeed, at 1:1 you're looking at about 8" from the subject.

Also have a look at the Tamron 90mm, the sigma 105mm and the sigma 150mm. Really not a bad one amongst them.
 
It's very good lens lots of people say it should have been an L, I have used the 180 Canon macro L and you cane see a very very slight difference in image quality, why not try the MPE 65 for 1 - 5 x life size , now that is a good lens takes a little while to master but the efforts are worth it IMHO ;)

I have the option to get one today around £100 but the AF doesnt work on it. But from experience I generally use the AF just to get the range then use MF to get the focus I want. So I am very tempted and also think I could haggle.

A great deal at that price. I recently got the Sigma 105, and on doing pre purchase research there's not a lot between it and the Canon 100. The Sigma was cheaper and it is a great lens. You are right about the AF/MF. I don't use AF for Macro.

If the AF is all that's wrong with the lens, I'd go for it:thumbs:

Aye, as long as manual focus is fine it looks like a decent enough deal :)
 
:agree: The 100mm macro is the one lens that I almost never use AF so for the price I'd say you'll be getting a bargain :thumbs:
 
You can't go wrong at that price. I've got this and the 180L. The 100 is sharper than the 180 until you get to f/8 or thereabouts and then the 180L walks away from the 100 in terms of sharpness.

For that money as has been said so long as MF works bite their arm off, you don't really need AF on a macro lens.
Never really bothered to note any distances but I would say around 30cm

Thanks for the replies :thumbs: ive done some more research using the "Are You thinking of buying a lens?" link and google.

Well ive only gone and bought it, looks in very good condition and is the one with the recessed lens. Feels really well made, cant wait to get home lol

Pics are brilliant, cant wait to get into this world lol.

You say you used an extension tube on one of the pics. Dont know too much about them. You can get 1.5 X etc by adding them but how do they work. Is it a case of more magnification or more distance to shoot from.

Oh and I forgot to say, I was cheeky and got him down to £95. :)

Adding tubes will increase your magnification but reduce your working distance.

Eg...32mm of tubes will increase your mag to 1.57x with a working distance of 128mm

Well what can i say, really chuffed with the lens :thumbs: Had a little play and came up with this, a little flash on second but well chuffed.

nice colours but i think the focus is slightly off, seems a little soft, or my eyes are..
 
yeah second one is. Was in a awkward position for it. Also light wasnt amazing for the two shots just used camera flash in a dim room. So i can see the potential is there for when i get setup right.
 
Congrats on your new bargain lens, remember the DOF is quite narrow in the macro world, the shots look good to me :) I expect to see some shots in the macro forum now you're tooled up so to speak ;)
 
haha cheers. Just found out its quite narrow but thats going to make it all the more interesting. Just setup a quick shot on some glossy paper of a 0.8cm watch battery.

I just hope its not too windy tonight because there is a caster oil plant in the garden and its got some cracking buds/flowers looks a little like a dandilion.
