Bought a refurb 5D mkII from Canon ebay outlet. Camera has a few problems I'm not happy with, contacted them and asked for a refund. I was told to wait 24-48 hours for an RMA. That was Monday, its now Friday and no email yet. I have contacted them last Wednesday and again today to ask what's happening. The person on the phone just asked me to wait because there's a "backlog" with RMA's and stuff.

Has anyone experienced the same problem with them before?

What should I do, can I open a dispute with paypal now?

I'm really not happy with their service.

I've bought a MFD printer and a 50mm 1.8 lens from them without any hassle but I haven't had to use their customer service.

They may have a backlog of RMAs but that is not your problem, I would involve eBay and open a dispute immediately. You've given them enough time to send a RMA. Only contact them via the eBay mail system so eBay have a record, state the facts but don't mention anything about feedback (it will count against you).

Good luck.

cheers, I've opened a dispute now.

If you're happy with the price then, since it has full Canon warranty, why not simply send/take it in for full repair? In my experience the service by Canon at Elstree is pretty good. If you're a CPS member then it's fast too. Since it would be a warranty fix they should ship it back to you for free. You might even blag a pre-paid label to send it in too, although I've never tried that - I just drive the 30 miles to drop my stuff off.

If the price was a bit borderline and you think you might be able to do better then by all means chase for a refund.

I did have a problem with a PayPal (not eBay) purchase recently with DigitalRev and once I raised a dispute with PayPal it did seem to galvanise the supplier into action with more haste. I guess the squeaky wheel gets most oil. :)

tdodd - its a sensor problem. It has lots of dead pixels even at ISO 100 (My 50D is very clean) - I have already done the "undocumented fix" to no avail , on live view I can easily see a big red spot in the middle and a white pixel on the left side of the screen. These are also recorded on the video. Bottom of the grip where the battery door latches is also loose which is very annoying as I hear a squeak everytime I hold it. Dirty/dusty sensor and view finder too.

What I'm really worried about is the sensor, do you think Canon will replace the sensor with the issue I'm having?

If a replacement sensor is what it needs then I don't see why that is not what you would get. The camera is supposedly fully reconditioned and with full Canon warranty, effectively making it as good as new, bar possibly a cosmetic mark or two.

You could try phoning Canon at Elstree and explain the situation. See what they say. If you have the serial number handy that may help.

I've done it and spoke to a canon rep. He said it could be the sensor because the dead pixel is recorded on the video. I might send it off:thumbs: for warranty work .

I need to mull this over.

Cheers

Sent my 5D2 back under warrenty for a faulty rear screen, added to the return note that there where excessive duff pixels and they stuck a new sensor in as well.

So I now have a 5d2 with no pixels that I can find faulty.

I may be sending my refurb 1d3 off in a few weeks, at 5 seconds at 125 ASA it looks like the sky at night.

Haha I now received an RMA number. I'll return the cam and buy somewhere else. Thank you all for your help.

Just to update this thread, RMA was immediately sent to me after I made a paypal claim and escalated it.
Parcel was collected 4 April and they received it 5 April.

I had to call them every day and ask when they will return my money. The woman I spoke to called "Ines" was so unhelpful, she kept telling me to wait and wait.

Then on 13/April I finally spoke to a bloke and he just asked me for the order number, checked if they received the parcel, then he immediately authorised the refund. I have my money now.

This is the worst ebay experience I've had, which maybe due to "Ines" who did nothing but told me to wait.

I wouldn't buy from them ever again.

Anyway, the canon eBay outlet that I am thinking of isn't operated by canon themselves.

Thats why I was asking in case it was another one...deer me!

In my experience a Paypal dispute gets quicker results than an Ebay dispute even though ebay own Paypal.

I was thinking that myself too, I searched ages ago and couldn't find a Canon outlet that was owned by Canon.

^ Yep, they are just a re-distributor. Doesn't mean it's bad though.

Funnily enuf, Calumet had a 'Spring Open Day' last Wednesday and I spoke to a guy there that bought one of the 1D Mk IV's that were listed on the Canon refurb Ebay site recently. He had an issue with the memory card door sticking so sent it to Canon for a repair under warranty.

Stupidly, his words not mine, he asked them for the shutter count...........112,000.

He was gutted!

:shake:

mine was 8k+ IIRC. I wouldn't mind the count really but what freaked me out was the amount of hot/stuck pixels even at ISO100 it was like a christmas tree:lol::lol::lol:.

I bought one from kerso with a shutter count of ZERO but with 3 stubborn hot pixels but does not cause problem with video, I'll just send it to canon when the sensore is dirty.

So they're basically lying about it then, saying they are new when they aren't.

Don't think they're lying as the OP says he bought a refurbished 5D. Refurbished doesn't mean new.

Ah you're right, I think I worded that incorrectly.

I understand they may not be brand new, but I'd say from reading they give the impression that things are just in damaged boxes or have small scratches or are delivered to someone and then there is a problem with it and it is sent back. not 8k shutter actuations!

This is exactly what I thought the refurbished cameras were. I didn't realise that some have actually had actually been used..

(Sent from my HTC Desire using TP Forums)

ive bought 10 or more 1dmk3,s from the outlet

id say 90% were good as new, as they should be, one was a dog, looked beaten up, over 100,000 actuations, even had the owners name in the exif info,he ran a business. I rang him up asked him about it, said the camera was very poor, well used etc. focus issues.

Sent it to canon , they made it look like new, but i still wasnt happy, eventually they found me a brand spanking new one :)

I pointed out that in the description of refurbished that they were used as demos, ie 1000 or less shots, not a camera that has been used to take over 100,000 pics.

Types of Products Sold
(Refurbished / New)

The products sold on eBay are either classified as "new" or "refurbished" (see the beginning of this item description).

Refurbished products are 100% OK and therefore we can offer them with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty. There is nothing wrong with these products! All refurbished products are sealed with an authentic Canon seal!

We just can't sell a refurbished item as new because...

- ...it was used as demo product (at trade fairs etc.), or

- ...the outside carton box was slightly damaged during transportation (and then replaced by a neutral brown packaging), or

- ...it was sold and the box was opened. Then the item got returned to Canon.

Upon return to our facility, a product of this type is put through a full set of functional test procedures, cleaned, repaired (if needed), and refreshed with a set of in-box materials (manuals, accessories, cables...) and sealed. The packaging of the product may either be the original Canon packaging or a neutral (brown) packaging. The core product itself may contain minor scratches or cosmetic blemishes. Please contact us regarding product issues before leaving negative feedback on eBay - Thank you!

So it's not all bad but can be a gamble, but then you send it to canon if threes probs.

So canon gave you a new one then? That's amazing!!
