I have installed the Canon Eos Utility on my XP machine but am unable to connect my camera (1DS3) to the pc.I have checked in device manager and there is a ?mark beside the 'other devices' which says Canon Digital Camera,i have gone through the routine of installing drivers as device manager says but still no joy.
Can anyone help with this, dont know what else to do,it used to work on a previous XP install,i have also done a windows update in case there may have been something missing..:|

Morning, Dave. :)

It's been years since I've seen a problem such as this, but if memory serves it tends to happen if you attach the camera before installing the drivers. I don't know whether that is your problem, but try the following.

1. Attach the camera to the computer via USB and turn it on.
2. Go to Device Manager, right click the errant camera device and uninstall it.
3. Turn the camera off and reboot the PC.
4. Run the EOS Utility installation again - I assume you have the latest version from Canon. If not then now would be a good time to download it and install the latest version.
5. Now turn the camera back on and, fingers crossed, it should pick up the required drivers and you'll be good to go.

If that still doesn't work then I'm afraid I don't know what to suggest.

Really? That comes as something of a surprise. I don't ever recall having been prompted to install that in order to use any of my Canon cameras, although it is required for Fo-Cal, which is based on Canon's SDK, so maybe EOS Utility needs it too and if it's not already there.....?

Mind you, it has been several years since I came face to face with XP. I was on MCE 2005 as soon as it came out. Ditto Vista, and now I'm running Win 7 on my daily grunt machine - a five year old laptop.

Just did a quick bit of digging and came across this remark about MCE 2005....

Media Center 2005 makes a number of changes to the base operating system over XP Professional SP2. The first is that Windows Media Player 10 and the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 come preinstalled.

So it seems pretty clear that XP does not have it installed by default. MCE 2005 was released in 2004 and I didn't get my first DSLR till 2006, so I've only ever connected a Canon camera to MCE or later, having successfully managed to avoid getting stuck in the dark ages with XP. ;)

Anyway, glad you got it sorted. Perhaps it's time for an OS upgrade as I imagine if you're processing 1Ds3 raw files your machine must have a decent bit of ooommpphh. I think Win 7 Home Premium X64 cost me about £50 when I bought it. If you're not quick Windows 8 will be out soon enough and you'll be about a million release levels out of date. :D

Yeah I had to install all my network frame drivers after I did a **** up re vamp of my PC
