Well after getting some priceless advice on here about a Telephoto lens, I am back for some more.

I currently have a Canon 450d + Tamron 17-55 f2.8 + Canon 55-250mm f4-5.6 + various flashes/usual kit. I have been considering upgrading the camera body for some time, reading up on "crop vs full frame", FPS, scrolling through sale threads on here and MPB.

I mainly shoot portrait, static transport but have been getting into motorsport - with the 450d 3.5fps this was no use at all.

I have a budget of £300-350 to spend (due to circumstances) and have got a shortlist of the following (all 2nd hand):

Canon 40d (w. money left over)
Canon 50d (spot on budget)
Canon 60d (more than I have)
Canon 7d (cannot justify spending 600+ currently)
Canon 1d/5d classic (lacking in features to newer bodies/need to replace all lenses)

What are peoples opinions? is there much difference between a 40d + 50d? Is the 60d the bee's knees?

Is your budget including or excluding selling your 450d?

If excluding then you should be able to afford a 60d.

Any of these will be an upgrade in terms of your current camera. The 40d however will mainly be in terms of control / size etc rather than offering additional features.

Sadly including the sale of my 450d, I will be selling camera gear and that is all the funds I will have (moving flat next week). Sorry I should have said.
 
I've a 40D and do motorsport and it manages very well and I'm very pleased with it. I don't fire off many shots in 1 hit - I'm not trigger happy, but the extra FPS available does help on those occasions where something happens and you need to shoot those extra shots very quickly - eg a car gets sideways etc...

I have a 50d and very happy, and have no plans to upgrade, great fps, great af, the ergonomics for me are better, and the extra megapixels help when cropping. Only thing is does the 450d use sd cards or cf cards? Worth factoring in when changing.

I've still got a 50D too.. I think there'll be enough to impress coming from a 450. Cheap as chips for a minty one now too. Just my opinion of course but i don't think the 60D offers enough extra to make it stand out any more either (though I'm sure 60D owners will want me hung drawn and quartered for saying so).
 
The 60d does though us sd cards so if the cost of buying new cf cards needed for the 50d out weighs the extra cost of the 60 over the 50 then it is well worth it, the newer technology and the articulated screen on the 60 does come in really handy at times
 
Thanks for the input guys, I think at least it'll be a 50d, the extra money for cf cards can be off balanced selling my sd cards. A 16gb is £30/40. I can build up a collection as I go. A flip screen and film capability would be handy but not necessary.

On a comparison site though the 60d got 74/100 and the 50d only 54/100.

Thanks for the link mikey, have only managed a quick look but I already edit straight into cs5 so dont think it will be an issue, is that correct?

Looking at budget I think a 50d is looking best bang for buck, without requiring more investmejt into cameea gear.

The whole 'I need silly high fps to shoot sport' thing is a massive red herring.

The fact is if you learn to time your shots properly there are very few occasions when you act need to spray and pray. Gunning the camera isn't a substitute for learning your skills and putting the right amount of thought into your work.

I usually get called a dinosaur for harking back to the film days but I learned to shoot sport using a 1fps 'auto winder' then by the time I turned pro I had the massive 3.2 fps of the nikon fm2 at my disposal.

If you want better af, iq or handling then by all means upgrade but all a faster fps will do is eat up your cards at a faster rate.

Thanks Pooley, when I was trying panning shots on the 450 a faster af would have definitely helped. As for fps I was trying a multi shot of an mx rider I wanted to ps into one picture and the fps of 3.5 really didnt work. Thats what made me start looking into an upgrade, I think I've outgrown the 450.

After learning a dslr I couldnt imagine going to film and 1fps, kudos for cutting your teeth on one of those.

For memory card get these as there 35 for 32gb work, work perfect in my 7d and the buffer clears fast.

I agree about the fps. I have a 7D and it's great having the 8 fps, but I think, especially if you're shooting RAW, the buffer size is more important and is worth upgrading for. You might want to consider a 'grey import'. I bought mine for a couple of hundred cheaper than I'd have got it elsewhere and got an extended warranty included.
 
See what you can do, the 60D is an excellent camera and well worth the extra in my opinion.
 
Also keep an eye out - one went for £375 recently - link - and knowing pastyman that will have been mint, so always worth pointing out as a bargaining tool.

Edit: Also check eBay - checking the completed - here - you'll see they're easy to get form £380 or so (inc postage), theres one at £330 (after bid + PnP £353) now with 2 hours to go (not mine btw :))

Thanks for the input john, I've had a look through and its above what I can afford just now (origional budget was £200) I think a 50d will fulfill my requirements for now. Possibly upgrade again when funds allow next year.
 
I've got a 50d as a backup body which we've had for yonks now and it's a ruddy fantastic camera! Only thing that's iffy on it is the shutter button is a bit sticky so sometimes takes split second to fire....never got it looked at professionally as we bought a 60d and we havn't had any issues like that on any of our other bodies so not sure if it's a problem unique to the 50d. :thinking:

Thanks for the input Justin, someone in an earlier post mentioned something similar - and fixing it via pouring alcohol into the battery compartment or something. May be worth looking into if it solves the problem?

As for the 50d I have found a good condition one in the for-sale ads and am purchasing it tonight. Having shifted enough of my kit to generate enough funds. Really looking forward to getting my hands on it.
